Beautiful illustrations! 🙏🏻 Good to see some facts… on data centre consumption of land, water, power… all leading to a suggested reasonable course of action.
Friends are shocked at the no. of data centres already in place & proposed. They say there’s been no discussion & it’s hard to get even basic information… The social license for these things is very thin. In popular culture the outcomes they enable are universally negative (eg 2 current programs: The Capture (ABC) - on the misapplication of surveillance, & Vigil (SBS) on the use of AI targeting & kill programs & mistakes). Less secrecy & more open dialogue might help. But when govts are secretive there’s often corruption behind it - how many & large are the lobbyist-purchased lunches & how big the donations into party coffers? 🤔

I’m currently watching an ABC iView drama series called #TheCapture. The central theme is ubiquitous #CCTV coverage coupled to #AI and #FacialRecognition. It is a BBC series so the action happens in the UK. The story expands on London’s CCTV coverage and the ability to identify anyone based on facial recognition software. It extrapolates this technology to marry it up with advances in #AI ability to fake video footage with dire consequences of course. It makes for a chilling series and more that a little unsettling considering what #TechBros can already do today because it is but a short step to what is portrayed.

I’ve just made sure both cameras on my iPad are securely taped over. Can’t do much about the microphone, but I’m a quiet person anyway.

If this sounds like panic… no, it’s not… well at least not yet…

You never know who’s watching you though…

Ps. Don’t take this too seriously, we have a few years to go before such technology is possible and becomes a tool to pervert the course of justice and enable Ai-driven technolog given the power to be judge and jury and, dare I say, the executioner.

Perverted AI technologies? What’s not to like?

I watched the first two series of #BBC series #TheCapture on the iplayer in preparation for the brand new third series - the last episode of series 3 just aired a short while ago. The first two series were really good, with a lot of food for thought about AI and misinformation.

Series 3 wasn't as good as the first two IMHO. They tried so hard to make a clever and convoluted plot, that they over-egged the conspiracy, and much of it didn't make sense. Still interesting, though.

I've just finished #TheCapture - I think S01 was better, but S02 is still good, recommended.
Also finished #StarTrekSNW S03 today and the most fun character was undoubtedly Doug. Looking forward to S04; curious how the writers plan to get rid of half of the crew.
