Just what I was thinking: “by this stage, the pedo vulnerabilities seem increasingly systemic”. Resonates as a warning loud & clear; should *not* be happening, and why it is happening needs to be investigated & curtailed.

Excellent map shows clearly where buffel grass was first spread by camel driving explorers in SA, NT, Qld, & other states… Usual sad story of an invasive species: “Once buffel grass invades, it dominates plant communities, reducing the diversity of native plants.” And animals especially birds, also ants. ☹️

Glad to learn that SA & NT have already declared it a weed (in my mind I say ‘noxious weed’ but not sure that’s true & not just some lingo picked up from somewhere…). 🙂

If we act now we might be able to get on top of it. 🤞
🙏🏻 thanks for sharing this neat piece of research by Dr Ellen Ryan-Colton & associates. Glad your mention spurred me to read it!

A well-captured zeitgeist: “Australians expect large, competent, interventionist government. Not timid contract managers of publicly funded essential services run for the primary benefit of investors.

I found this para an interesting summary… albeit usual depressing ending
(the rest of the article is about American billionaires’ “giving pledges” - now out of fashion, apparently):
“Wealth last concentrated at such levels during the original Gilded Age, the 1890s through the early 1900s, and the correction didn’t come from philanthropists. It came from trust-busting, the federal income tax, the estate tax, and eventually the New Deal. It arrived as policy that was driven by political pressure too powerful to be ignored. The institutions that forced that correction — a functional Congress, a free press, an empowered regulatory state — look considerably different today.”

Spain gets it - but their government also *explains* it. 🙂 Faced with an ageing demographic, which means a shrinking working age population, Spain can choose to be closed & poor or to open up and be better off overall. So they’re taking practical steps to better integrate migrants they already have, legally into economic as well as broader society.
🗣️ A lot is said about how previous waves of immigrants want to keep newer waves out (a truism unlikely to be universal in my view*) but isn’t it up to leaders to explain why new people coming into our countries is a good thing & the many steps we can & will take to make it work or to make it work better? 🤔

    * Do the children of immigrants feel the same as their parents? Do attitudes vary with education level? Etc. 🤔

Very interesting indeed. 🙏🏻 for sharing this study. Critics will say oh the data’s so old & it’s only from Argentina, but I say disprove it!

From the findings & conclusion (long quote but offers some useful pointers):
“secret police service indeed paid off. Agents attained higher ranks and stayed longer in the security apparatus. These career boosting effects were most pronounced for agents with the lowest early career performance.

“Taken together, our study identifies mundane but universal career concerns as the prime motivation to engage in arduous secret police work. This has important implications. Career pressures serve as the lubricant of repressive machines in autocracies. Leaders can exploit these incentives to maximize bureaucratic compliance. Institutionalized, meritocratic bureaucracies therefore do not contradict autocratic longevity. Likewise, governments can accomplish swift autocratic turns without major bureaucratic resistance. Officials facing career pressures are likely to serve as willing executioners, while their well-placed peers remain silent bystanders. Finally, our study also points to potential problems with international sanctions and transitional justice. Looming risks of discharge or incarceration are unlikely to deter the least competent agents with the lowest career prospects. To the contrary, external threats of legal punishment might even strengthen the dominance of underachievers with doubtful consequences for the production of violence.”

Wow! 🙏🏻 for sharing this one, a really interesting story, event; worth reading the whole article, nicely written with a lot of information, eg: “Good Santa or bad Santa?

“The reaction to the theft has been overwhelmingly positive on social media, but in a statement to CBC News, Geneviève Grégoire, a spokesperson for Metro [the supermarket chain] said it was important to remember that theft, for any reason, is unacceptable and constitutes a criminal act.

Marc-André Cyr a lecturer in political science at Université du Québec à Montréal, pointed to "discrepancy" between the institutions that say the stunt was a crime, and the public's perception, "which ultimately finds it acceptable." “

    Also noted that:
"They continue to stifle the population, siphoning off as much money as possible, simply because they can. For us, that's theft, and they are the real criminals."

“Canada's inflation rate stayed flat in November but grocery prices grew at fastest pace in nearly 2 year” [Stats Canada data]

Yes, same, correlation is not the same as cause… in the narrow sense: it’s not only or necessarily a Covid vax that reduces all-cause mortality risk at a population level (18-59yo; ~23m vs. 6m!). On the other hand, stepping back, this study does quantify a general ‘prevention benefit’, which is of course based on many things, including socioeconomic status.

Rudd summarised (in part), quoting study authors: "Although vaccinated individuals in our study were generally older and tended to have more comorbidities -- factors that would typically bias the association toward higher mortality in the vaccinated group -- this was not observed in the crude hazard ratio," Zureik and colleagues wrote. People who were vaccinated were more socioeconomically advantaged and probably had better healthcare management, they added, factors that "may partly explain the observed negative association between vaccination and mortality, counterbalancing the effects of age and comorbidities." End quote.

WonderIng if other similar studies exist; needs a more careful read including refs.

Outrageous. 😤 Excuses blown out of the water (sorry for metaphor) by Horton & Nakashima, in Washington Post: “ “The idea that wreckage from one small boat in a vast ocean is a hazard to marine traffic is patently absurd, and killing survivors is blatantly illegal,” said Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Massachusetts), a Marine Corps veteran and vocal Trump critic who received a classified briefing from Pentagon officials on the strikes in late October with other members of the House Armed Services Committee. “Mark my words: It may take some time, but Americans will be prosecuted for this, either as a war crime or outright murder.”
    … and
“ the Pentagon has not fulfilled a bipartisan request from lawmakers to see unedited footage — making it impossible to verify any of the administration’s claims.
“The lack of transparency is a major obstacle to government accountability for its use of force, Huntley said. “Really the only oversight,” he said, “is public and political pressure.” “

And it sounds like it’s not getting any better… with organisations which overcollect but can’t secure data continuing to do the same… That’s depressing. But as you say, if there are no consequences why bother to improve? 😐
In the meantime, the most secure data is that which is not collected. I know it’s preaching to the converted, but for orgs: if you don’t need it, don’t collect it; or don’t continue to hold it. 😐

As if the war wasn’t enough, to then be running out of treatment options for wounded soldiers… the situation seems hopeless… but every analysis identifies one or more solutions & this is a textbook write-up of how to find hope & better responses. 🙂
So glad I read it; only concern is what is the situation in Ruzzia (have read elsewhere about rises in all sorts of infectious diseases like HIV etc in Ruzzia & in a world so interconnected can we afford a rogue country so close to many others? Rhetorical question - but facts could be helpful - before they start distributing the measles-infected blankets).

No one observes so accurately as an observer who’s an outsider. As well as the “irrational madness” quote, there’s this: “MAGA is a backlash by white, evangelical forces seeking to return the United States to its pre-1960s civil rights era. Its core supporters are low-income, low-educated whites and evangelical Protestants. Trump has channeled the anxiety of these groups, whose status has been shaken by job losses, deepening polarization, and the surge in immigration due to globalization, and has incited their anger toward the established elite and "outsiders" (people of color, undocumented immigrants, Muslims, etc.).”

And this, with wider applicability: “Declining industries are destined to be passed on to developing countries over time. Even in our case, reviving a declining industry is difficult. The situation is even more dire in the United States, where production costs are at least 30% higher than ours and the industrial ecosystem has collapsed due to over 20 years of manufacturing hollowing out. Trump is dreaming of using his imperial power to mobilize allies to reverse this trend. To make matters worse, if the empire treats allied workers, who are willing to help, as if they were vassal slaves, then nothing will work. The United States is now shooting itself in the foot with foolishness.”

Such a great conversation, role modelling good behaviour & how there are consequences for bad behaviour & that you *meant* it when you said it 🙂 (whereas, sadly, so much is performative these days 🙁).
I’ve read & reread it & I thank you for sharing it. Please consider: could it be first in a series? I hope so!! 🙏🏻
