Frightening. 🙀 Two smart people very much taken in & manipulated & not in a good way. Nothing in common except maybe loneliness; & the first guy’s cat died (sounded like he had no one to talk to about his feelings about that; quite common in our society - no one wants to know about your grief, few have mastered the art of just listening & letting you be sad… gross overstatement, but covers some truth). 😿

Elon Musk’s X or whatever bit of his empire runs the Grok version of ‘AI LLM agentic thing pretending to be nearly a person’ never responded to enquiries (in their rude & usual arrogance). 😡

The researcher & reporter ask what are the harms with more subtle cases? 🤔 Feel like we all want to know that… are we in mind control experiments if we use these things… 🤔
It could be nice to have some reassurances. 😮

    It’s a great question & never discussed enough.! 🙏🏻
There are dots but no one around long enough to join them… Short-termism. A few years ago all the big LICs (Listed Investment Companies) in Australia were pointing out that as long-term investors they were there to grow value - not short-term gains. They were quite miffed to be treated the same as short term profit takers. It’s a different mindset to think ahead ten years vs next quarter. As @Salvo points out in a neat real world example down thread.

  3. And here’s another bit from Michael Crichton’s ‘Disclosure’ (which he says is based on a true story), 1st published in 1994, but still feels contemporary in lots of areas; this is part of a longer speech:
“Third, I think that we have an obligation to— a social obligation, if you will— to keep high-paying skilled jobs in the U.S. Other countries don’t export good jobs. Why should we? Each of our offshore manufacturing decisions has been made for a specific reason, and, personally, I hope we start to move them back here. Because there are many hidden costs in offshore fabrication. … we need manufacturing. If there’s anything that the last twenty years has shown us, it’s that design and manufacturing are all one process. You start splitting off the design engineers from the manufacturing guys and you’ll end up with bad design. You’ll end up with General Motors.”

A lovely read, beautifully written, reminding us that “the European Web… conquered the world because it was offered as a common good instead of seeking short-term profits.” 🙂
Redefining ‘success’ as contributing to the commons (copyleft) as opposed to privatising:
“Some are proud because they made a lot of money while cutting down a forest. Others are proud because they are planting trees that will produce the oxygen breathed by their grandchildren. What if success was not privatizing resources but instead contributing to the commons, to make it each day better, richer, stronger?

“The choice is ours. We simply need to choose whom we admire. Whom we want to recognize as successful. Whom we aspire to be when we grow up. We need to sing the praises of our true heroes: those who contribute to our commons.”
🙏🏻 so much, for writing this, for sharing it 😁

Absolutely! And thanks for walking the talk so thoughtfully, this so resonates & yet it's so unusual I hardly have words to think about it, which is why your example is so valuable: "« In this age of #technofeudalism every writer who covers technology - especially resistance to #BigTech - should disclose their tech stack. Here's mine »"

    Ah... Leading by example!
Also... I finally understand the concept of 'tech stack'! Thanks again! 🙏
