San Francisco educators, on strike since February 9, should reject with contempt the betrayal of their four-day strike and expand the struggle to Los Angeles and beyond.#SanFrancisco #teachers #GavinNewsom #UUESF #AFT #Weingarten #defendpubliceducation #teacherstrike #austerity

  4. Gil McGowan - head of the Alberta Federation for Labour and the Common Front has said - “I just want to make it really clear that if the government puts a gun to the head of the teachers and they’re not able to continue their strike, then we in the broader labour movement will stand where they’re not able to,”

  5. Premier Smith says, “There is still time for the teachers to” … what? Capitulate to the province’s terms? The province hasn’t offered anything meaningfully different in months.

“The pre-condition is getting kids back into school” she says, admitting that the province isn’t negotiating in good faith, but has placed all their eggs in the basket of back-to-work legislation that tramples the most basic labour rights Canadians have fought hard to hold.

  6. Back to work legislation?

    How dare they.

You teachers out there who refuse, hats off to you. That is people power in action. To you, Jenny Yeremiy, for initiating a petition to recall the Minister of Education, hats off to you.

Support these folks, Alberta. They need us to rally behind them in person, with financial support, volunteering, whatever is within your capacity and means.

Now is not the time to give up, it's the time to double down.

Hey Alberta, let’s not let the #TeacherStrike completely distract us from the ridiculous level of corruption, grifting, and conflicts of interest they’re covering up in #PublicHealth.

Every tech alternative, every private operator or provider they contract will end up costing us multiples of the same service provided within a robust public health system.

New Zealand is learning that lesson, and we should learn from their experience: $95 paid for a telehealth consultation, $20.45 for the same consultation in person

  9. @cbcnews @edmonton-cbcnews

The #TeacherStrike is not an urban vs rural issue: students and teachers everywhere are being shafted by a government that simply doesn’t believe in basic social infrastructure like public schools.

One is six Albertans right now is a child not in school because the #UCP doesn’t want to fund education to a reasonable level, and this is true outside of major centres as much as in big cities.

  11. Thousands showed up outside Premier Smith’s “State of Alberta” speech to remind her and everyone else present that the state of Alberta includes that 1 in 55 workers in this province is a teacher on strike, and 1 in 6 people in this province is a child out of school, and that this situation exists because the UCP refuses to appropriately invest in public education.

  13. Perspective on the situation in Alberta:

50,000 teachers are on strike because the funding the #UCP provides for education is woefully inadequate ($3,000 per student per year less than the national average) and the government would rather funnel money into private schools than fund public education anyway.
An additional 7,000 teachers would be required just to meet the classroom sizes promised that were made last time teachers pushed back, promises that were made but never kept.
So now 1 in every 100 Albertans is currently a teacher on strike: support them, let them know you stand behind them, let them know you understand why this strike is necessary, and for the sake of all that is good in Alberta never - ever - vote for the #UCP

  15. Nicholaides (AB Minister of Education): we can’t cap class sizes with a hard cap, that not reasonable, there needs to be room to adjust to circumstances, and learning isn’t necessarily better in a class of 22 compared to 29.

Me: great then *you* propose a flexible capping system that has teeth and accountability, because we’ve already been through several rounds of ‘average’ class size ‘goals’ and and promised that now *your* government has used that to starve the system to the point that kids are in classrooms of 40. And kids definitely learn better in classrooms of 25 compared to 40.

  16. The Alberta UCP accused the NDP government of being “ideological” in their approach to schools. Perhaps they were: they hold values and ideas that make a strong, high-quality, effective, accessible public school system to be a social priority.

So let’s also be clear about the ideology of the UCP. They hold values and ideas that do not value a strong, high-quality, effective, accessible public school system. This is why - despite governing the self-described richest province in the country - they consistently under-fund public education while funnelling money into private schools.

Public funds (“welfare”) for the privileged, the rest of us be damned is the clear UCP message.

The current strike is not merely a dispute about wages or class sizes, it is at its heart a calculated decision that now is the time to break the public school system.

So people should think about the values being shown and ask yourself, “Which ones do I agree with?”

    I stand with teachers.

  17. Here’s the government’s track record on funding education, currently Alberta public funding is $3,950 per student less than the Canadian average, and Alberta private school funding is $5,000 per student more than the average. In fact, the only reason the Canadian average is as high as it is is because Alberta funds private schools as heavily as it does, skewing the average.

By my figuring, if the province redirected the funding currently directed at private and charter schools (~$9,000 per student for 63,000 students) would free up over half a Billion dollars in resources for the public system, allowing the addition of another 2,000 teachers.

A government that claims it can’t ‘afford’ decent class sizes and yet pours $567,000,000 every year into private schools is just lying.

  19. So as far as I can tell, today’s protest at the Alberta Legislature in support of teachers who are about to strike is the largest protest ever held at the Leg. with estimates ranging beyond 20,000. And this was only one of many well-attended protests across the province.

I certainly hope the government will reconsider their position in the face of this, but I have never seen a more ideologically motivated government so sure they were right and willing to to plow ahead through anything once they’ve set a course.

That was my reaction too, but it’s still a savings for them… they currently spend ~$63 / student / day ($11,464 / student / year) and about $45 of that is paid to teachers: overall (including higher grades) they’re saving a good $20M-25M /day there.

Interesting that they’re ok with funding a form of universal childcare as long as it’s part of a union breaking battle and not something from Ottawa…

  24. Teacher wage increases: offering 12% over 3 years is pathetic, because teachers are already so far behind.

Wage increases for teachers since 2013:
    0%, 0%, 2%, 0%, 0%, 0%, 0%, 0.5%, 1.25% and 2%
    … for a total of 5.87% over 10 years.
Meanwhile inflation for that time was over 30%

Everything you will hear from the government is misleading spin, including how impoverished the province is. They’ve squandered billions in surpluses rather then setting it aside to fund important things like health and education.

  26. For anyone who hasn’t been following, the province hasn’t offered anything new beyond an offer that teachers already rejected months ago. They are counting on angry parents inconvenienced by a strike to turn on teachers. Let’s make sure we show our support for teachers loudly and often.
We’re on the same side - the side of our children.
