  4. Federal funding cuts could impact South #Mississippi #library services

    Aug. 7, 2025

GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - "The Harrison County Library System is asking for support to prevent further federal budget cuts.

"If a new round of federal funding cuts is approved, it would impact the Institute of Museum and Library Services, which is a federal agency and a major source of funding for local libraries.

"South Mississippi library officials said that cuts at the federal level could result in a loss of various services.

" 'We don’t want this to happen,' said Sarah Crisler-Ruskey, Director of the Harrison County Library System. “This will impact our ability to serve our patrons.'

"The federal funding helps provide #DigitalMaterials, #InterLibraryLoans to share books from other Mississippi #libraries, and grants for technology and programs.

" 'Libraries also help patrons access the #TalkingBook service. So if they are visually impaired or have a physical reason they can not hold a book, this is a free service that is funded by the same money,' said Crisler-Ruskey.

"The Harrison County Library System is asking people to contact their Mississippi congressmen and senators and let them know that the library is important to them."

  13. @theapplefarmer @wilw

I don't object to dead tree books; I struggle to read them due to my visual #disability.

Books are #books and people should #read.

The why I read #audiobooks is below. If you were looking for an argument about planetary impact by book format, that's down the hall and on your left.

If this isn't the answer you were looking for, you can go about your business. Move along, move along.

I was born with #cataracts and I grew up with the #TalkingBook program through the American Printing House ... as an adult, I was kicked off of government assistance due to my sight measuring at 20/50 (this was an error; see below. I live in #Texas and ...). The error is, in restoring my sight to low-end normal, they cleaned out the innards of my eyes. I have no organic lenses and no support structures that could accommodate implants. All the ability to focus is in my eyeglasses. It's like having a telescope that you can't adjust - I have "distance" vision at the top and "reading" in the bifocal insert. And they're a special type of lens that even my workplace's vision plan does not cover. So yes, I technically see 20/50, but only what I'm directly looking at. To look at anything, I have to turn my entire head.

  14. @HumToTable @Defiance That's like being #blessed. #TalkingBook, man. You Are the Sunshine of My Life is one of the best album openers of all time. You've Got it Bad Girl's chord's are so gorgeous it's a #standard, covered by #DonaldByrd and #HerbieHancock And that's just side one.

  15. Now spinning at my house, because...

...well actually, you never need any reason to put on #TalkingBook by #StevieWonder...you just embrace being alive
