For MC Bolt, this would be a disaster. She has an almost obsessive pride in the beauty and strength of her wings (she's an athletic day angel who loves to fly). Becoming a creature living in two-dimensions would crush her. She'd cry and rage, neither typical of her. When hunger forced her to hunt, she'd be horrified. People don't eat meat as far as she knows, and eating fish doesn't prepare her for looking at a living breathing mammal as food. This would be totally bad for her.

#Substitoot Do any of your characters have troubles with deadlines, like getting a term paper done before the last day, or buying holiday presents?

When Bella still lived with her mother in Ravenhold Castle, she often forgot the time when she was secretly studying magic, or making potions, or riding her horse. She then had to run to get to the meals with her mother in time, or to the lessons with her tutor. She was always a bit late and running.

@NearerAndFarther there will be an indicator at the bottom of the screen when you open a specific post in the feed that shows the progress of resolving and loading the replies (if it's working).

That said, I see you are on Mastodon 4.4, which ships with this functionality server side (although it might be disabled by default still and may need to be enabled by your server admin). I believe 4.5 also has UI support for this. Still haven't gotten to actually updating myself.

Which is to say, #Substitoot will hopefully no longer be needed since the thing it was a kludgy substitoot for is finally implemented, so there won't be any new development on it, unless someone wants to take over. I'll try to make an "official" announcement in the repo/website/addon pages ... when I get to it :)

@box464 from my limited testing in the last few weeks #Substitoot supplements this quite well with its web UI kludges. But sure hope I can retire it completely asap.

My instance is on v4.4.0. Quote post something if your instance allows it, so I could bask in its glory 😀

Also, is the reply fetch supposed to be configurable in the admin section of v4.4.0? I am still using #Substitoot for a quick look before going to the original post to follow the discussion.

Turned on FETCH_REPLIES_ENABLED=true on loud.computer.

Seems to work, but rather slowly and needs a refresh (but maybe that's a glitch-soc UI specific issue, idk). Still, a significant progress.

#Substitoot was made as a stopgap until this functionality is properly implemented server-side (hence the name). Can't wait for the day it fades into irrelevance :ABlobCatHappyPaws:

Скорее нет, чем да, и причина в самом механизме федерации. Тут, блджад, даже все комментарии в чужом треде ты не увидишь без танцев с бубном (аддон #Substitoot для браузеров, есличо, маст-хев). А лайки, на которых бы можно было строить какие-то рекомендации, вообще не федерируются.

#substitoot is pretty much mandatory currently to engage with the fediverse, as otherwise I'm missing like 99% of a conversation.

This solves one of my two major pain points with #mastodon (the other one being the inability to follow tags in lists).

Интересно, а все здесь понимают, что при просмотре какого-либо треда, вы видите не все комментарии, а количество лайков/бустов никак не отражает реальность?

Для примера я открыл один и тот же пост в аккаунтах на малонаселенном сервере, на средненьком и третий вариант — с аддоном #substitoot. Результат, кмк, удручает (комментарии в треде посчитать не могу, но в первом случае виден один (!), во втором пара десятков, в третьем много).

Насколько я понимаю (надеюсь, верно, если что — поправьте), это bug in design: открывая тред, вы видете комментарии только от тех людей, на которых подписаны вы или кто-то с вашего сервера. Сообщения остальных участников диалога просто не были доставлены на ваш сервер, он о них ничего не знает.

Substitoot — аддон для лиситьсы, который подтягивает в тред все ответы, вытаскивая их с удаленных серверов. А также загружает последние сообщения в профилях «незнакомых» пользователей (надо будет «перезагрузить» профиль, т.е. открыть его повторно). Рекомендую к использованию всем, кто сидит через веб-морду.

#Substitoot by @virtulis is a great #browser #addon that patches incomplete threads on here, by trying to fetch missing posts from remote instances.

Unfortunately, as the developer states, it does not (yet) handle block lists, so you may see unwelcome posts from even more unwelcome accounts.

I've created a #github issue to ask for the highly desired filtering. If you've got an account there, please consider giving it a thumbs up and / or leave a few encouraging words for the developer.

Hey fedi, AITA if I want to make:

A server that indexes fedi threads - for #Substitoot, but also for any other client to use freely, and FOSS of course.

It would only save post URIs and what URI they're replying to, and perhaps boost/fav counts. No content and no author even (unless it's part of the URI, as for Mastodon).

And it'd try to operate as a decent AP node whenever possible, and identify itself and check robots txt otherwise.

The purpose is to provide this URI tree to clients so they can fetch them locally on demand for the specific thread (as Substitoot does now). No bulk access or anything like that.

This does not feel to me as something going significantly outside of expected (but not actual) fedi behavior as to require explicit consent from authors of said posts.

All it would do is enhance the experience of using the actual fedi software on terms set by posts' authors.

I dunno. I'd rather you throw things at me now than when I make it.

Update: since this is getting new boosts, I thought i'll edit the post. The upcoming Mastodon version 4.5 near-completely removes the need for this addon (and in fact it may interfere with the native mechanism).

If you are already on version 4.5 (for example, if you are on mastodon.social) you don't need it and should disable it if already installed.

The extension will be officially retired once 4.5 releases.

Sometimes a temporary solution really is temporary. Let us rejoice in that.

A huge #Substitoot update is up (and rudely opens this status in a new tab!).

• Completely rewritten internals. No more blocking and no more fake statuses, everything is fetched directly to your instance one by one.
• Now showing a progress/status indicator at the bottom of the screen (when doing something).
• A number of bugs wiped out of existence along with many kilobytes of legacy code.
• Can now fetch from all omas and keys (or so I think).
• Firefox on Android can now install the addon normally (or so I think!).

Question for instance admins. I have an idea for a new separate feature (cough algorithmic feed cough) for #Substitoot (probably, it'd sure make sense).

It would require it sending a lot more unauthenticated requests for public statuses and contexts to remote instances. Would that be a nuisance?

It already sends a proper user agent and I can make it obey robots.txt or whatever.

Unlike #Twitter it's not all one big website. It doesn't even all run the same software! Instead it's a bunch of separately administered instances sharing posts back and forth. And it works really well!

Ok, ok, it *mostly* works well. If you use #Mastodon in the browser, especially on a smaller instance, consider also installing my addon, #Substitoot - it makes sure you can see and interact with all replies to all posts.

I promise it's only because I finally had some time today, but there's an update for #Substitoot (v. 0.5.4)

Mostly a bunch of fixes, but it can also talk to Pleroma & Akkoma now.

Larger plans for the next update, which, knowing me, will probably be ready by 2024. :)

Okay. An update for #Substitoot is up:

- Changed the request intercepting approach (see below).
- Replies to remote toots now work as expected.
- Local context now shown immediately, remote stuff is added when it's ready.
- Actual real boost/favorite count on remote toots!

Switched from intercepting web requests in the background process to injecting an XHR wrapper, as well as plugging into the Redux store if possible.

New mode is on by default, but old mode still available if needed (new mode is not tested on versions < 4.0 so tell me how it goes). The new features are only in the new thing though (and the reason it exists).
