Can anyone suggest an alternative to #LanguageTool? They are making their browser extension available to Premium users only due to the cost of #genAI (https://languagetool.org/webextension/premium-announcement?type=background_tab&utm_campaign=addon2-trial-page)
It seems not having the bloody genAI is not an option, and I was finding it annoying anyway.

Releasing Iyal Spellchecker 0.0.6
A Tamil Opensource Spellchecker is my long time dream. With the continious efforts of many friends, we released “Iyal Tamil Spellchecker” recently.
You can check it here – https://iyal.kaniyam.ca
Test this and add any issues here – https://github.com/KaniyamFoundation/iyal-tamil-spellchecker/issues
It has huge words collection, bloom filter based quick search, bk tree based suggestions, Tamil rules from Tamilinaiya Vaani spellchecker, Grammar rules from LanguageTool.org and more.
Read more about its architecure here – https://goinggnu.wordpress.com/2026/04/26/building-open-source-tamil-spellchecker-day-10-iyal-spellchecker/
In this release, today added 5147 new words to the collection.
There are total 1,55,966 words now in that repo, used as base word bank.
I am collecting these words from 625 tamil websites, blogs. Thanks for all of them for writing Tamil in public and to provide RSS feeds. I collect latest content daily, calculate the words frequency. If any word is used more than 50 times, I consider it as a good used word and add to the collection of Iyal tamil spellchecker.
Added few right words, few wrong words and few replacement words.
Hoping to release next versions with more words. Let me know if you want to add any new features.
Thanks for all the contributors.

codebook, https://github.com/blopker/codebook.
A spellchecker that works in code.
I've replaced `harper` by `codebook` just today, and it works quite well.
It's based on `spellbook`, https://github.com/helix-editor/spellbook, a library made by the Helix editor team.

have this conversation with students all the time - "I don't care if it's 'polished!' I need facts, examples, explanations! But still run #spellchecker..."

Look, #Spellchecker, I can do without the weird words with spelling close to common ones. I can assure you that when I type "alow" I really mean "allow" and I'd like you to catch that. #spelling
If I want an uncommon word in the dictionary, let me put it in. And let me remove any words I want, too. I'd rather be dinged every time I type "form" and mean it, than to have a mistyped "from" get by. #typo

Harper is a grammar checker that is on-device and open source
“When it comes to grammar checking, Grammarly is the premium tool for it. It’s a proprietary tool, and it was among the first one to make a mark as a web-based Grammar checking tool. Then there is LanguageTool that is/was open source, made in German ...continues

I wrote an email with the apple mail app on my iphone. I used the word “fascist”. It does not show up in the spellchecker matches. I did it again using the mastodon web site. Still no “fascist” but it does show up as a keyword. So an apple problem.
How are we going to talk honestly without all the basic words being valid?
Use it anyway. Fuck spellchecker. -

Browsing some old photos & screen grabs looking for something in particular, I stumbled on this rather amusing example of how important it is to #proofread and not rely on the #spellchecker

Unpacking The False Dichotomy Between Assistive and Generative AI
NaNoWriMo created a shitstorm (of their own making) when they released a statement on AI driven by their sponsorship by ProWritingAid, which has been used as an automated grammar checker, but now has unspecified AI features. (Pi

I should have made a screenshot: My #spellchecker just suffered from a hiccup of some sort and underlined the word ‘a’. As if this wasn’t strange enough, it offered ‘MacIntosh’ as the only possible correction.

Thx again. I had never heard of #OnlyOffice.
A third one for me, then. 😉
Paid for corporations?
BTW, I still find the #Office365 #spellchecker still lacking. It always overlooks 1-4 error per printed page.
I often use #LibreOffice for my #Word docx files as an additional step.Haven't done any papers larger than 20-30 pages with this method, but never had a layout etc. issue after re-opening and saving ahson in #WinWord.

Dear spell checker, for future reference, I’ll let you know if I ever really want to swipe “snot”. #SpellChecker #WheresAIWhenYouNeedIt

It would seem an eyebrow-raising message is hidden as an #EasterEgg inside #LibreOffice.
Type '#cybercriminals'...
The #spellChecker will kick in to offer you its opinion. XD

I keep forgetting how to spell various #interjections. So I thought: why not use that trick of exploiting my phone's #SpellChecker just like I did to transform #LaTeX commands into #Unicode math?
E.g. if I type \mathbbR my phone suggests ℝ.
So I might add a time that turns \curious into ooh or something like it

I figured it out!
1. Enter "about:config"
2. Search for "ui.SpellCheckerUnderline"
3. You won't find anything but you can now add this as a new config option. Select type "string".
4. Enter a hex-code like "#D66BBD"#firefox #spellcheck #spellchecker #accessibility #colorblind

I'm a pretty good speller, but is there a way to enable a #spellchecker in the browser on #Mastadon? I'd like it in multiple languages, while I'm wishing. ℑ𝔠𝔥 𝔰𝔭𝔯𝔢𝔠𝔥𝔢 𝔞𝔲𝔠𝔥 𝔇𝔢𝔲𝔱𝔰𝔠𝔥.
I just tweeted the below on the #BirdSite, by the way:
Can't believe the Google spellchecker (as used on Twitter) doesn't know about the word "whinger." I've had to add it to my personal dictionary via a right-click.

Halleluja, mein #Firefox kann jetzt mehrere #Wörterbücher gleichzeitig benutzen. Kein nerviges Umschalten mehr beim Wechsel der Sprache.
