The argument against Source Available licenses in a single sentence;
"We need to stop torture, but we can't do it through software licenses."

"After I joined the company, and a year of evaluating alternatives, in March 2024, we decided to move Redis to the SSPL license. This achieved our goal—AWS and Google now maintain their own fork ..."
#RowanTrollope, 2025
Huh. No wonder warning them that a relicense to SPPL would only result in a fork had no impact. It never occurred to me that getting corporate re-users to fork was the *goal*! But that kind of makes sense.

Cal.com Goes Closed Source: What It Means for Self Hosting, Trust, and Open Software in 2026
Cal.com is taking its production code private while launching Cal.diy. Here is what the change means for self hosting, trust, and user control. -
Wow Keychron sharing all the industrial design files for 83 of their products is very cool. They're releasing it as a source-available non-commercial license but explicitly encourages non-commercial community modding and accessory development. This is also very encouraging from a right to repair perspective!

What are your thoughts on noncommercial source-available licenses for projects by small companies / individuals?

Wrote about this recently as well. We don't want Source Available to become the standard. Its not gonna help - https://www.unsungnovelty.org/posts/10/2025/oss-and-sas/

Wrote about #opensource and it's evil twin - #sourceavailable softwares:

A couple of years back, a bunch of projects started switching to proprietary Source Available licenses like #SSPL. I predicted that they would soon regret it, as they started to be replaced with forks of their own software. Feeling pretty smug reading this ...
"Redis bets big on an open source return
The company is hopeful that changing its license will allow it to better compete with the Valkey fork."

Memory a small card-matching game I made in GB Studio 4 to learn some new features.
It is very, very simple but people seem to be enjoying it! You can read about the algorithm or look over the code!
📐 Traditional rules.
🎼 Catchy tunes by Goodnight Girl.
🎨 Everything else by me.#GBStudio #CardGames #GameBoy #SourceAvailable #Pexeso #GameDev #HomeBrew #RetroDev

👀 Why We’re Moving to a Source Available License - ScyllaDB
"As the Enterprise version branched out of the OSS branch, it was helpful to keep a unified base for reuse and efficiency. However, it reduced our paid version differentiation since all features were open by default (unless flagged)."

@kfdm @teleclimber @aljazmerzen @dahukanna @scottjenson yeah Cloudron is Docker based too, and the individual Cloudron app packages they create are all themselves #opensource https://git.cloudron.io/apps it's just the core @cloudron platform itself that is only #sourceavailable
-
@teleclimber @aljazmerzen @dahukanna @scottjenson my favourite thing in this space is @cloudron it's by far the best IMHO. It's not #opensource but it's #sourceavailable. I started a thread on their forum of other similar things here which may be of interest https://forum.cloudron.io/post/73347

I just found out that @bookwyrm is Source Available, not Free Code (or as most people call it "Open Source");
https://github.com/bookwyrm-social/bookwyrm/blob/main/LICENSE.md
Which means if anyone asks, I'll be recommending NeoDB (AGPL) instead;

More proprietary Source Available nonsense;
However, this is still worth a read;
Everything he says there applies equally to voluntarily paying a purchase fee for an AGPL package, even though you could just assemble it yourself from source code.

Sentry is running a campaign for the new marketing term "fair source". Currently this boils down to their new Functional Source License (FSL).
So far there's not much traction: GitButler and four early stage startups.
What differentiation does this new category offer from source available?
And most importantly, it doesn't address the main concern:
When owned by a single vendor, project license is volatile. https://horovits.medium.com/b5486a4de1c6 -

The support for dual-licensing in formats like Cargo.toml or package.json is garbage for no reason. If you want to dual-license and you aren't exclusively using SPDX standard licenses, your use case is unrepresentable by the formats.
Hate it.
