The AI Industry Has Finally Found the Perfect Customer: Bloodthirsty Terrorists
“The terrorists are not waiting for us to make AI safe,” Juelich told the NYT. “They are able to use them now and train them to cause harm.”
Spokespeople for both Anthropic and Google failed to take accountability when asked for comment by the newspaper, saying only that they had strict and effective guardrails in place.
“We know that bad actors will never stop trying to misuse our tools, and we’ll continue strengthening our defenses in response,” OpenAI spokesman Drew Pusateri said.

Experienced a slopocalyptic event? You can report it on Slopocalypse (or just go look at the website and shake your head in despair like I did)

Are red currants safe for dogs? Someone wants to put such a plant in my backyard as part of a study on hummingbirds.
A quick web search finds several sites claiming they're highly toxic and several claiming they're perfectly safe. Which ones are slop? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Dammit, Jim, I'm a computer scientist, not a veterinarian!

Before AI, slop existed. It has been a companion of humanity for over 2,000 years.

I wish I could switch to a completely slop-free editor without compromising my workflow too much.
Helix would be a great alternative: Its mappings seem a bit more consistent than Vim’s, also it has Tree-sitter, LSP and fuzzy pickers already built-in. But it lacks some features (digraphs, extensibility, folding – in that order).
I also had a look at Kakoune, which also seems alright, but I don’t like that tabs and splits are delegated to the terminal emulator, a multiplexer or window manager. I respect that decision, but I’d prefer that feature to be built-in.
For now, I’ll stick to Neovim. At least they have a policy that makes LLM users check and sanitise the generated code (https://github.com/neovim/neovim/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md#ai-assisted-work), although I’d prefer if they’d outright ban it.

The #slopocalypse is the result of the gamification of the OSS development. It just feels good to land a PR, especially on a popular repo. Combine that with the ughm less experienced devs' proneness to overestimate their achievements, and the ease to half-bake something that looks plausible enough, and you get the explosion of low-quality slop. Something similar happened to, say, youtube or facebook, but there there was at least some financial incentive

🔔 BREAKING: #Jazzband is finally bowing out after a decade-long jam session where everyone got to play maestro 🎺. Apparently, a "slopocalypse" struck, and now they're scrambling to hand off the baton by 2026. Ah, the sweet sound of disorganized chaos in open source #management 🎷.

Hey, Google...
Where's the "No. Fuck off." button?
Apparently this is a new daily pop-up I get to dismiss when doing searches with my Android phone...

Hey, those all sound like problems we could solve with more AI.

My Android phone keeps trying to ragebait me with constant news story notifications about "[AI company] Strikes Deal with [PC hardware manufacturer]".
It's working.

I should probably renew that $17/yr RackNerd 2GB VPS plan I use for Pangolin, before it's no longer $17/month anymore...

Stumbled into a cool single-pass-through-the-LLM AI-hallucinated gem while trying to add a Portainer widget to my Glance dashboard.
Instructions to obtain an API key are completely-made-up, as are half of the API hooks into Portainer.

Coming to the realisation that I'm going to have to skill up on AI tools to at least try and ride out my industry's slide into the #slopocalypse.

Remember: if you ever feel bad about using AI, just go for a long walk, touch some grass, and remind yourself it took 50,000 gallons of clean water to generate that grass. 🌱💧 #AIguilt #Slopocalypse
