As @[email protected] reports, it appears #NATO will waive the requirement for #Ukraine to have a Membership Action Plan before joining NATO. Ukraine's #MAP was previously blocked by German Chancellor Angela #Merkel, over fears that allowing Ukraine into NATO might be a step towards a global war. (Not that Russia appears capable of prosecuting such a war, given the #shambolic #performance of the Russian military in Ukraine.)
#Sweden's application to join NATO, on the other hand, is still being blocked by #Turkey.
... Except that Turkey may now yield on that objection in return for being allowed to buy F-16s.
... Or maybe not, because now that the US is potentially willing to yield on that issue, Erdogan is now insisting that Turkish membership in the EU be placed back on the table as well. (We'll just handwave for the moment the strained nature of any claim that Turkey is plausibly either geographically or politically part of Europe.) Turkey has been trying to join the EU since 1987, but the EU has balked because of Turkey's questionable human-rights record.
But suppose the EU yields on that. What will be Erdogan's NEXT demand to drop his objections to Sweden?
No, no, no. We're going about this all wrong. I mean, frankly, at this point I'm ready to ask "Can't we just kick Turkey out of NATO?" But if there's a deal to be made here, this is the deal I'd be offering:
Turkey will be allowed to buy F-16s IF AND ONLY IF it drops any objection to Sweden joining NATO, and no aircraft will be delivered until AFTER Sweden successfully joins with no further interference from Turkey AND Turkey pledges not to interfere in Ukraine's NATO membership application.
Erdogan is trying to hold Europe to #ransom to get what he wants without giving up anything. He needs to be told we won't permit it.
