Our teacher had a workshop for a group of university students, and we helped out. We played three songs as examples of the types of music usually played on the sanshin.
But, the students *also* learned how to play Twinkle Little Star on the sanshin, and that was great! They loved actually playing a real instrument, and it was a blast helping them!

My Aikido teacher received a #Sanshin for his 60th birthday. This is a traditional Japanese stringed instrument from Okinawa.
We tried to tune it during the party but failed miserably. 😆
And now I've learnt that there is a system of notes specifically for this instrument that describes how to play it:

These are my concerts and presentations as a #Ryukyu #Minyo #singer and #sanshin player so far. I don't intend to boast about it at all. To be honest, I prefer to rather not publish them on the internet. I know that I'm not such great Minyo singer yet. It's even more obvious when I hear all the skilled Minyo singers around me here in Okinawa.
The application procedure for a so called Cultural Activities Visa in Japan requires me to publish my achievements, so that the officers can judge wether I'm worth the effort or not. My teacher and me handed in my application today at the local immigration office. Wish me good luck.

Now, typhoons aren't exactly rare - we have a couple every year - but this one is likely to pass right over us. And I mean right over - the current prediction puts the path centerline right on top over our home.
It will be fine. Buildings and infrastructure is all built with typhoons in mind. But I foresee a couple of days spent indoors, watching the storm, practicing the #Sanshin and going through my Steam library.

Wild news from #Okinawa. 5 #sanshin were stolen from Teruya Rinjiro's store https://www.teruya-rinsuke34.com in Okinawa City but were thankfully recovered unharmed & a man is in custody. The sanshin were worth a total of ¥3 million & the thief had sold them off to pawnshops & minyou bars. I've been to the store before & contacted Rinjiro a couple of years ago to see if he ships internationally (answer was "no”) because his sanshin are so beautiful. So happy for the outcome.
