That was nice, some heavy drone reverbs and a few longish segments, but I'll come back to this type of patch. -
Regarding that undervoltage thing, to keep the power solid and inside the case I came up with this idea...
I trust the 5V Regulator and have up to 4000mA available on the 5V rail of the case as none of my #eurorack Modules uses that source.

#SynthDIY work-in-progress. This is a 16-step sequencer with dual outputs (it’ll be triple in the final design). Each step has a “rest” switch.
The special sauce here is that you can turn a knob (or, once I build the next part, send in a trigger) and offset the second output from the first, in terms of its position in the sequence. Same 16 steps, including the rests, just occurring at an arbitrary number of beats or measures ahead or behind. -

Last month I posted about a new education-focused monosynth that I designed & built. Today, in celebration of just having done the rough math about how much it cost to build one (NOT including R&D costs, aka manufacturing multiple versions of boards with bugs, and no, I'm not gonna tell you what the final number was, it's too scary), here's the github repo with *all* of the collateral for the whole project:

I really wanted to post this version of the audio instead because the audio is rendered using a TUI DAW that I made, but I decided against it because I think the harpsichord makes my mistakes a lot more obvious

Day 1 of #weekOfPatching
Optimized my #cablesGL stable diffusion patch to work with performant RGB 8bit textures. Also adding a normalmalp lighting base.
The idea is to sync up cables patches with dj sets comming from @mixxx, there already is a "midi for light" midi mapping available in Mixx, which does the hard work here.
Next up is extending this with more features.
(The audio is just a random synth noodel, no way to record the audio right now.)

Front panels! You can see how I drilled the corners, then scored with a scoring plastic cutter to cut out panels from this cassette caddy.
The bottom slots will probably be the mixer and μClouds. I don’t think I’ll have much room past that. Good thing I’ve got more cassette caddies on the way from Ebayers!

Hey, alright. Power bus is in place. Gotta get up the courage to plug it in and test voltages.
Plus, I did the 5V bus differently this time: I can power Arduinos or whatever out of here now off the pairs of 5V and ground with a little 2-conductor DuPont connector.
I doubt I’ll have any in here tho

Went on another tangent of tangents.
Record 8 layers of free running audio loops, that can be played at half speed and have a probability to reverse speed on collision with other loops.

@alisynthesis Well, I've been doing mostly Eurorack design for around 7 years. I like the idea of smallish portable cases, too, so a lot of my designs have been on the more, ahem, "compact" side. So many tiny knobs.
Last year some friends of mine started Boom Club (boom-club.org) here in Durham -- one part synth library, one part performance space, one part educational mission.
I put together a few little cases to help get them started, things that were each patchable standalone into a synth voice (so each one had some sort of clock, a sequencer, a VCO, VCF, envelope + VCA or low-pass gate, and a mixer + headphone output).
A couple of weeks after I dropped them off, I got a text from one of my friends saying "how do you patch this case again? I can't remember" and picture of one of those little cases.
That was the seed that stuck in my brain & got me thinking. I was probably on vacation when I started drawing things up.
So, there are a couple of things about this monosynth that I really homed in on: First, all the knobs are really big & generously spaced, and the labels are large and easy to read.
Second: On the one hand, it's not normalled behind the panel at all. Everything has to be manually patched.
But OTOH: Every jack has an LED underneath it. When in "guided patching" mode, it will flash pink lights under pairs of jacks, showing ppl where to patch. Successfully patch one pair, and it goes on to the next pair, until a full patch is done.
There are seven "guided patching" programs, each one designed to help people learn a different analog synthesis concept or technique.
The video I shared earlier was the exponential FM patch. I'm attaching a video of the "massive cross-modulated noise/drone" patch to this post, just for fun.
I also wrote a big (11x17 landscape, to sort of match the scale of the synth) manual, with one two-page spread for each patch.
I can't believe it took nearly a year -- I wasn't working on it every day, or necessarily even every week, but it has definitely been an active work-in-progress that whole time.
A lot of it was engineering problem-solving (e.g. which jacks to use to be able to easily & reliably detect a cable was patched, and then how to fit those jacks into the overall design since they're twice as deep as the jacks I usually use).
I also figured out how to add working switchable rests to the sequencer -- that sequencer is already intended for hands-on playability, and I should probably make a whole post/video about it.
And I rewrote the firmware for my quantizer & solved all the problems I had made for myself in the first version, which was also fun & gratifying.
In fact (and I'm not sure whether I'm psyched about this or just feel like it's inevitable), I suspect the next 3-4 months are going to be me taking a bunch of the design tweaks out of this & putting them back into individual eurorack modules. The VCO in this is really fun & I don't have one like it in eurorack, for example.

Added sub step modifiers to the midi tracker and I can now do small ratchets and even a chord mod (if the synth has polyphonic midi)
Now with a bike bell I found on the ground somewhere during my commutes.

CW: synth expo
Spent a bit of time at a local guitar pedal & synth expo, mostly for the synth part. I was surprised how much of the synth examples were "here's my version of Teenage Engineering's OP-Z" or other various digital synths-in-a-box. Kinda disappointing, really. Barely any eurorack, and nobody selling DIY kits!
4ms was there, and their racks were cool enough, but they were promoting their MetaModule, which is basically a Pi running an entire VCV Rack install embedded in a eurorack module. Seriously, you can call up any virtual module you want and wire up everything virtually. At that point, why have a real rack?
PDX Synth Library was there, and had some neat rack builds. One was a skiff made from a section of PVC conduit, with the lid + handle also serving as the stand... Seems like something that would be very easy with a handful of 3d-printed inserts.
But yeah, not really much else for the #synthdiy hobbyist. -
Here's a better example of my newly built Passive Low Pass Gate acting in a real patch.
The Chord Organ by Music Thing Modular is a great VCO to use here, the bouncy echoes come from the sound being run through the LPG, which is being driven by triggers from the Doepfer A160-2 clock divider. The clock source and echoes are the 4MS Dual Looping Delay.
Other incidental sounds appear from several additional sound sources, including the Benjolin that is driving other sequencers and gates.

Final version of the DIY passive Low Pass Gate. From design to build in about 3-4 days.
Had some troubleshooting to do with ground connections but got it working without too much fuss.
I built this specifically to go in the case in the video because I needed a simple filter for a different dimension on the existing sound palette.

Passive LPG is live!!
Here, the VCO is sending a pure square wave melodies into the low pass gate. The Maths is in repeat mode, sending very short envelopes to the LPG.
In the middle, the switch lets all the sound through and accents the sound with the control voltage coming in.
But switched to the top (bouncy!) and bottom (mellow!), the filter slope is modified by bigger capacitors so that only the CV pings can be heard.

Got the main board for the low pass gate done. Might trim the back legs of the vactrol so it lays flatter. Also finished up the panel, laying on the table in the background.
Tested a handful of vactrols and found one I like, but it is amazing how different they can sound.
