Late for the #303day, but happy to share an acidic performance that was inspired by the more aggressive end of the 303 sound.

Twenty minutes of figuring out the best envelope, resonance and distortion for an Acid House track? Just follow me this way:
-
I appear to have created a "sound card" for a 4-bit CPU.
As you do.
-
Close-up. I like the new changes, just going all-in with the color theme.
You may be wondering about the tube inside, which actually doesn't light up because it is so low voltage that the heater pulls less than an LED. The Russian sub-miniature 1J24B (1SH24B, 1Ж24Б) tube is mounted above two amber LEDs to give it that glowy tube feel!
It's called a "timbral gate", my PCB says "distortion", but the meaning is the same: a VCA with the tube profile as part of the sound. It is a beautiful module for shaping audio.
-
Dr Benway the surgery was a success!
-
Today's adventure: does this CGS65 tube VCA/distortion still work?
Built this sometime in the aughts, bought the PCB directly from Ken back then. It was perforated, so you had to split it in two pieces that were later connected with the rainbow of jumpers you can see here.
When I got started with panels I used this thin lexan that was perfect for paint or rub-on lettering. The washer colors came later and are a little weird so I might change those. The knobs are also not great for the high-friction alpha pots so I may swap them, too.
-
Hopefully repairing this Doepfer PLL module with a new OpAmp, since that's most likely the thing broken, but we'll see. The two logic chips are bigger and I don't have any of them, but I do have some spare NE5532P opamps.

I went to take a picture of the back of the #ObliquePalette prototype 0.5.5 and it came out like this. So I gotta share.
The front, in the second image shows the inputs & outputs. Analog knobs, 3.5mm jacks for Eurorack, pin headers for Arduino (or other electronics) & servos.
(It's for turning computers into machines for making art, fucking around, and falling in love. You talk with it using the extremely powerful graphical language, #plugdata.)

I had good fun making this simple MIDI synthesizer with Teensy: SoundFont, Additive, Subtractive and FM synthesis all in one. 🎹
-
3rd time I soldered V1 of the board, and it's now working OK. I realized the problems with the RGB LEDs were not caused by faulty hardware, but rather wonky DMA transfer timing. In the process, I did find some hardware issues which were not breaking things (yet), such as missing caps next to each LED and wrong logic voltage being applied on the inputs. The MIDI optocoupler was also pumping 5V into the MCU, which is not supposed to be safe. Fixed all of that, and I will hopefully come up with a second version of the PCB in the coming weeks. I will also most likely replace the buttons with something a little bit more reliable. These E-Switches are really not great. But before ordering any boards from China, I will work on making the software better. The OS support for the microsd card is also still quite broken. #synthdiy #eurorack #rustembedded

I've just spotted the kino-key from @kazbo_ (Kinoshita labs)
This is a completely open source 25-key MIDI controller, including PCB, code and 3D print design for keys.
It uses a XIAO RP2040 and it looks great :)

I'm making my own minidexed case. For a setup using a PCM5102A DAC, SSD1306 OLED, KY-040 encoder, 3 low profile key switches and TRS MIDI in. #synthdiy #electronics #minidexed #dx7

🧵About last night: Needed distraction to clear my mind, tinkering w/ electronics was perfect for a change. On top of that ezpz but one of these days list was my OG 3000, a designated JP model (= 100 V mains). Had to rely on crappy power converters for years, until I (literally) hacked an (oversized in every aspect) toroid 230 V transformer into it. The excess spec of the toroid made the 7x05/7x12 type regulators a lot hotter than before. Aside recapping and resoldering all PSU PCBs (done), there had to be a better solution one of those days.
See the ALT-texts for descriptions of a walkthrough.

Phew! #ObliquePalette prototype 0.5.5 (the ninth prototype in two years — one of them wasn’t built because we found a catastrophic error last moment) looks to be ready for manufacturing! Things could actually be correct here!
Really looking forward to teaching #programming and #sounddesign and #computerart with Oblique technologies! I want to see what patches people integrate into their #eurorack rigs! I want to see robots & environmental control!

And this is the serial MIDI version of part 4, but this time I'm back with the original XIAO ESP32-C3.

And part 4 goes back to using the XIAO SAMD21 in the XIAO Synth to create a simple synth module with buttons for voice selection and volume control.

Wow this is a great resource if you want to get to know your Yamaha synth chips...
https://gist.github.com/bryc/e85315f758ff3eced19d2d4fdeef01c5
I seem to have access to YM2413, YM3812, YM3420, YM2414, YM2164 and if I can get my RC2014 sound card up and running maybe a YM2149 too :)

Another video. This time doing the USB to Serial MIDI and CV/GATE at the same time, so it can drive both a Korg Volca Modular and Korg Volca Keys...

Using my USB MIDI to Serial/CV board as a Korg Volca Modular compatible USB MIDI to CV converter.

Note: Please don't do this. Your Volca deserves better than my electronic fumblings! :)

Pondering a large-knobs desktop monosynth (which will actually almost entirely be a bunch of my #eurorack designs with larger I/O boards, a ton of sane normalling, and a single common panel).
In my defense, I actually have a specific use-case in mind. I spent some time last weekend at BOOM Club in #DurhamNC (https://www.boom-club.org/) and ppl definitely seemed hesitant to touch the synths on display, despite it intentionally being set up as a synth petting zoo.
So what I *want* to do is similar to what the #Erica #Bullfrog does -- a friendly monosynth that demonstrates typical synth signal flow in a hands-on fashion.
Why not just use the Bullfrog? Well, mostly because I don't necessarily agree w/some of their choices :)
Like, I agree with "no built in keyboard" because Too Much Trouble. But I think "make weird squelchy noises" gets old quickly for most people, so I want to include a simple playable 8-step sequencer.
And I want the thing fully normalled so that there's a default working flow with zero patches -- but still make it patchable.
Now all I need is for freaking Trump to back down from his China tariffs . . .

My Raspberry Pi Pico 2-based Dub siren now has a simple synth engine in addition to a sample engine, so its sounds now range from classic siren sounds to air horns and vocal snippets.
In this short video I show off the synth engine: 🎹🔈🎶

thx again 2 @todbot
And if you haven't seen it yet check out this video for yesterday's exploration of the sample engine: 📯🔈🎶

I was inspired by @todbot's latest #CircuitPython audio effects experiments, so I had a go at incorporating what I learned into a DIY Dub siren. It consists of a Raspberry Pi Pico 2, an i2s module with stereo line out and some pots, an encoder and a button.
Check out my unfinished (but already fun) prototype here:

NB: the case was a charity shop find.

The new audio effects libraries in CircuitPython are super fun. Here's a quick "taster" showing off some of them, part of my impending "Synthio Tutorial". Thanks Mark & Cooper for making them!

Took some juggling but I got them going together. Success! The G&T gate-to-trigger is sandwiched between the Doepfer A160-2 Clock Div II and the Nonlinear Circuits Poultry in Motion PT2933 delay with integrated divider that can be synched to the delay steps.

Picked up two used clock dividers at Perfect Circuit so I'll be tetrising a spot for them today.
I really want the large delay / divider in the big rack but the space I have is 8hp, not 10.
My Rotating Clock Divider died and I will try to fix it, but I have momentum on other makes that I need to finish first!

I've updated my #picoDexed to include a basic encoder/display UI and updated to the latest Pico SDK.
This is a port of Synth_Dexed to the Raspberry Pi PIco.
I also thought it was probably about time I actually documented the basic architecture :)

I'd like to improve the temperature compensation of the #VCO's, that tend to drifts slightly out of tune. Is anyone aware of a source of 3500ppm/°C tempco resistors at a reasonable price here in Europe? #synthdiy #electronics

Michael Bauer, maker of the DIY REMI electronic wind instrument, has just published all the design and build notes from a pretty neat Samd21 based synth, designed for an Adafruit Itsy-Bitsy M0.
There is a very comprehensive build guide and all code is for the Arduino environment and up on GitHub.
Read more here: https://www.mjbauer.biz/Sigma6_M0_synth_weblog.htm
I always learn a lot from his writeups :)

Instruments I play, in no particular order, none all that well and some pretty badly:
* #Keyboard (incl. #synth (incl. my #synthDIY modular))
* #Clarinet (incl. #altoClarinet and #bassClarinet)
* #Recorder
* #Pennywhistle
* #Melodeon
* Anglo #concertina
* #Ukulele -
And so here are my design notes.
This is essentially my take on the Music From Outer Space power supply (links and references in the post) but with an added 5V line too and three connectors ready to go.
