*dancing around this cute little setup*
I bought a wind up toy during lunchtime yesterday and converted it to take Triggers 😀 and it has such a nice slap/snare character!
-
Applied physics 101 - so now I have a much more controlled and accurate striking method. Fun to use things from around the house like these tiny ice cream spoons we saved from somewhere!
-
The scale is working again and I have this nice harness of weirdness dangling on my desk!
(CC: @noisio because of the awesome uMixa)

CW: synth expo
Spent a bit of time at a local guitar pedal & synth expo, mostly for the synth part. I was surprised how much of the synth examples were "here's my version of Teenage Engineering's OP-Z" or other various digital synths-in-a-box. Kinda disappointing, really. Barely any eurorack, and nobody selling DIY kits!
4ms was there, and their racks were cool enough, but they were promoting their MetaModule, which is basically a Pi running an entire VCV Rack install embedded in a eurorack module. Seriously, you can call up any virtual module you want and wire up everything virtually. At that point, why have a real rack?
PDX Synth Library was there, and had some neat rack builds. One was a skiff made from a section of PVC conduit, with the lid + handle also serving as the stand... Seems like something that would be very easy with a handful of 3d-printed inserts.
But yeah, not really much else for the #synthdiy hobbyist. -
The next part of the rat orchestra with #cablesGL and #vcvrack :
A very squeaky step sequencer, press the encoder to enable or disable step. Change the value to change pitch.

Here's a better example of my newly built Passive Low Pass Gate acting in a real patch.
The Chord Organ by Music Thing Modular is a great VCO to use here, the bouncy echoes come from the sound being run through the LPG, which is being driven by triggers from the Doepfer A160-2 clock divider. The clock source and echoes are the 4MS Dual Looping Delay.
Other incidental sounds appear from several additional sound sources, including the Benjolin that is driving other sequencers and gates.
-
Final version of the DIY passive Low Pass Gate. From design to build in about 3-4 days.
Had some troubleshooting to do with ground connections but got it working without too much fuss.
I built this specifically to go in the case in the video because I needed a simple filter for a different dimension on the existing sound palette.
-
Passive LPG is live!!
Here, the VCO is sending a pure square wave melodies into the low pass gate. The Maths is in repeat mode, sending very short envelopes to the LPG.
In the middle, the switch lets all the sound through and accents the sound with the control voltage coming in.
But switched to the top (bouncy!) and bottom (mellow!), the filter slope is modified by bigger capacitors so that only the CV pings can be heard.
-
LPG progressing nicely. Buss wire for ground and mechanical stability.
-
Got the main board for the low pass gate done. Might trim the back legs of the vactrol so it lays flatter. Also finished up the panel, laying on the table in the background.
Tested a handful of vactrols and found one I like, but it is amazing how different they can sound.
-
Y'all wanted some sound so here's some sound... 😎
Pulse wave from Benjolin2 and CV from Maths.
-
It feels so nice to put my whole mind into something completely different.
Planning the low pass gate into a 3hp panel.
-
Prototype working for a passive (no power) low pass gate with vactrol, featuring switchable film capacitors for filter character changes. Sounds really nice!

I'm designing an ADSR circuit where I use a schmitt trigger to store the state of the envelope and figuring out the resistor values to get the threshold voltages I wanted was a bit slow, so I made this little tool for playing around with them: https://tools.sandelinos.me/opamp-schmitt-trigger-playground
Just put in the output saturation voltages of your opamp and mess around with the resistor values (the arrow buttons jump through E12 standard values) until you get thresholds that you like.
-
Just did some testing and confirmed that every "TL072" and "TL074" I used during my first few years of building my synthesizer were actually relabeled LM356/LM324 chips. Never buy cheap ICs from ebay and aliexpress if you can avoid it. #SynthDIY #electronics

Does anyone happen to know whether Bernie Hutchins of Electronotes fame is still around?
I'd like to buy his "everything" package, but his web page has a notice from 2020 that he's not taking orders.

Twenty minutes of figuring out the best envelope, resonance and distortion for an Acid House track? Just follow me this way:
-
I'd like to improve the temperature compensation of the #VCO's, that tend to drifts slightly out of tune. Is anyone aware of a source of 3500ppm/°C tempco resistors at a reasonable price here in Europe? #synthdiy #electronics

Here's the finished NANDulator. Not my prettiest circuit layout, oh well. You may notice the kludge on one of the caps... after building it, I realized that it didn't work like on the breadboard (as sometimes happens), and upped the value of one of the timing caps for the 4093. I decided it would be easier to cut the leads of the old one and solder the new leads to those than desolder from underneath.
Video demo etc. on the way.
-
Ok, here's the schematic to go with those noises from last night. Calling it the NANDulator I guess, because I suck at names. :)
I think this could work as a beginner's circuit, and there's possibilities for hacking/modification as well.
I'll do a video and post it to the website when I get it built on perfboard and in an enclosure.

I went to take a picture of the back of the #ObliquePalette prototype 0.5.5 and it came out like this. So I gotta share.
The front, in the second image shows the inputs & outputs. Analog knobs, 3.5mm jacks for Eurorack, pin headers for Arduino (or other electronics) & servos.
(It's for turning computers into machines for making art, fucking around, and falling in love. You talk with it using the extremely powerful graphical language, #plugdata.)

🧵About last night: Needed distraction to clear my mind, tinkering w/ electronics was perfect for a change. On top of that ezpz but one of these days list was my OG 3000, a designated JP model (= 100 V mains). Had to rely on crappy power converters for years, until I (literally) hacked an (oversized in every aspect) toroid 230 V transformer into it. The excess spec of the toroid made the 7x05/7x12 type regulators a lot hotter than before. Aside recapping and resoldering all PSU PCBs (done), there had to be a better solution one of those days.
See the ALT-texts for descriptions of a walkthrough.
