Facing US sanctions, the International Criminal Court was on Thursday awarded the European Union's top rights prize, in a show of support that risks upsetting President Donald Trump. The ICC thanked the European Parliament for giving it the Sakharov Prize "at a time when the Court and its officials face unprecedented challenges". The International Criminal Court wins the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, in defiance of Trump’s sanctions.

Reacting to EU Parliament president Metsola’s announcement of the winner of the EU’s top human rights prize, the president judge of the court thanked lawmakers for the recognition of the court and its officials and said “there is no peace without justice and no security without law”.

Once again the European Parliament proves to be the most resilient and gutsy of the European institutions.

The 2026 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought was just awarded to the International Criminal Court.

It's remarkable this comes right after the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Navanethem Pillay, a former judge of the ICC.

Some people and institutions are fighting back, sadly just not the ones who hold actual power and the ability to intervene.
