"While the city’s streets are lined with anti-American billboards and posters, #Tehran’s Museum of Contemporary Art opened an exhibit this week of six works by three American Pop artists of the 1960s -- #RoyLichtenstein, #RobertIndiana and #JamesRosenquist – mainly chosen for their #AntiWar themes.
"The works come from the museum’s large collection of masterpieces of American and European modern art that was acquired by the wife of the former shah in the 1970s. Most of it has been kept out of view since the Western-backed monarch was ousted by the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
"After living under #USIsraeli bombardment for weeks, the young men and women strolling the gallery felt a resonance from the works.
"Some contemplated #Rosenquist’s 'F-111,' a collage dating to the era of the U.S. bombardment of #Vietnam that critiques America’s #MilitaryIndustrialComplex with images of a warplane’s fuselage, a #nuclear #MushroomCloud and a child’s face."

¿Qué es el Pop Art? La cultura pop según la revista Kena en 1966
En 1966, la revista Kena se preguntaba: ¿Qué es pop? Una pregunta simple con una respuesta más compleja de lo que parece. El Pop Art es todo y nada a la vez. Puede ser un cuadro de Roy Lichtenstein, valorado en cinco mil dólares, representando a una rubia «sexy» bebiendo Coca-Cola junto a Superman. Pero también pueden ser las tiras cómicas dominicales que inspiraron su obra.

El pop es tan amplio que abarca desde una serie animada como Johnny Quest o Los Picapiedras, hasta un club nocturno en Nueva York, The Plastic Inevitable, dirigido por Andy Warhol, el indiscutible «papa del pop». Incluso un impermeable de vinilo o el anuncio más simple pueden ser considerados parte del movimiento.
El Pop Art: un fenómeno anglosajón que conquistó el mundo
El Pop Art es un fenómeno básicamente anglosajón. Surgió alrededor de 1960 y sus principales capitales fueron Nueva York y Londres. Sin embargo, su impacto no se quedó ahí. El pop se ha colado hasta los rincones más remotos del mundo.
Hay pop donde hay un anuncio de Coca-Cola, donde suena un disco de The Beatles. Pop es el reflejo de su época, el aire del tiempo.
La esencia del Pop Art
Lo que hace al Pop Art tan llamativo es su capacidad de transformar lo cotidiano en arte. Puede ser cualquier cosa imaginativa, poco seria, común y corriente, rebelde, nostálgica o nueva; cualquier cosa divertida que parezca un juego. Sus artistas se toman tan en serio como cualquier persona que se considera un «genio». Y, al igual que los demás, teorizan y defienden su obra con frases como:
«Antes se pintaban botellas de vino y frutas; ahora pintamos envases de refrescos y hamburguesas. ¿Cuál es la diferencia?»
«¿Por qué dice usted que un árbol o una colina son más bellos que una bomba de gasolina? Por costumbre, sólo por costumbre.»
Los artistas pop no desprecian ningún estilo. Utilizan con igual desparpajo el Op Art (arte óptico), el llamado «arte comercial» o el academismo «de todos los días». Según ellos, el arte ha bajado de su pedestal a la calle. El Pop Art es todo, está en todo.
La moda Pop: entre lo nuevo y lo nostálgico
El Pop Art no solo influyó en la pintura, también cambió la moda. Fueron pop:
- El no-bra (sin brasier).
- Las botas Courrèges.
- El monokini.
- El maquillaje Op y el maquillaje inspirado en los años veinte.
- Los vestidos de aluminio y la joyería de fantasía con dibujos geométricos.
- Sombreros con bulbos eléctricos.
- Camisetas decoradas con Batman y tiras cómicas.
- Uno de los símbolos pop por excelencia: las medias con rayas, cuadros, círculos y corazones.
Muchas de estas tendencias parecían novedosas, pero en realidad eran un refrito nostálgico de otras modas y épocas.
Un arte que sigue vivo
Aunque a primera vista el Pop Art pueda parecer confuso, su impacto es innegable. Desde los años 60 hasta hoy, sigue influyendo en la moda, la publicidad y el diseño. Lo pop es más que arte: es un fenómeno cultural que trasciende el tiempo.
Conclusión
Desde sus inicios, el Pop Art rompió las barreras entre el arte y la vida cotidiana. Lo mismo puede ser una pintura de Lichtenstein que un comercial de televisión. En 1966, Kena lo describió como confuso, pero evidente. Hoy, su legado sigue siendo innegable.
