An Iranian museum holds a rare exhibit of American art, reflecting on war
By MEHDI FATTAHI
Updated 11:43 AM EDT, May 8, 2026TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — "The artworks are distinctly American — famed pieces in vivid colors wrestling with themes of war, violence, pop culture and commercialism. What’s startling is where they’re on display: In a museum in the Iranian capital, at a time the two countries are locked in conflict.
"While the city’s streets are lined with anti-American billboards and posters, #Tehran’s Museum of Contemporary Art opened an exhibit this week of six works by three American Pop artists of the 1960s -- #RoyLichtenstein, #RobertIndiana and #JamesRosenquist – mainly chosen for their #AntiWar themes.
"The works come from the museum’s large collection of masterpieces of American and European modern art that was acquired by the wife of the former shah in the 1970s. Most of it has been kept out of view since the Western-backed monarch was ousted by the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
"After living under #USIsraeli bombardment for weeks, the young men and women strolling the gallery felt a resonance from the works.
"Some contemplated #Rosenquist’s 'F-111,' a collage dating to the era of the U.S. bombardment of #Vietnam that critiques America’s #MilitaryIndustrialComplex with images of a warplane’s fuselage, a #nuclear #MushroomCloud and a child’s face."

Dziś obchodzimy rocznicę urodzin Roya Lichtensteina, urodzonego 27 października 1923 roku. To jeden z ojców chrzestnych pop-artu, słynny z obrazów przypominających komiksy i eksperymentowania z kulturą masową. „Whaam!” albo „Drowning Girl” to klasyki XXI-wiecznego spojrzenia na sztukę.

Current mood, as expressed by Michelle Dubois of the Résistance.
Recreation of another piece by Roy Lichtenstein, using Affinity Designer.
Speech bubble altered from the original, with a wink to the wonderful BBC series “’Allo 'Allo”.

A little weekend fun, re-created this classic on iPad. Not entirely decided on her thought bubble though, might change later…

A Conflicted #Cartoonist Ponders #RoyLichtenstein
There a Lichtenstein documentary on Apple TV, regarding his appropriation of other people's work. Sounds interesting.

I went to see an exhibition of the work of the Icelandic pop artist #Erró at the #ARoS gallery in #Aarhus today. A lot of his work is based on collages of comics which he then paints on a large scale. See the collage and the final work below.
The work is interesting but unfortunately he does not credit the original artists, so raises similar issues to the work of #RoyLichtenstein. 1/

Picasso famously said that good artists copy, great artists steal. To which we can add that con artists rip people off. #RoyLichtenstein https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2023/apr/09/new-allegations-of-plagiarism-against-roy-lichtenstein

He even did one with the Holy Mouse and the Deified Duck, so I don't think it will lead anywhere for comic artists who "lived austere and even destitute lives."

Meanwhile in the #artworld...
The extent to which #RoyLichtenstein depended on (or 'stole' if you prefer) #comicbook art (and #artists) is now much clearer.
We've always known that RL sometimes 'appropriated' comic book imagery for his iconic #PopArt works, but the newly realised extent of dependence on the work of others, is now reviving the question:
at what point does appropriation become theft?
This may well turn out to be a quantity issue, not a quality one

Some quotes from a Washington Post article about the #documentary "WHAAM! BLAM! Roy Lichtenstein and the Art of Appropriation", highlighting the controversy surrounding Roy Lichtenstein's work:
«I find that his painting rather resembles something that’s been slavishly traced without understanding, rather than taking an underdrawing and enhancing or changing it or giving different emphasis. It seems to me the linework is coarse and devalued by the somewhat limpid way in which he applies it. I certainly would rather look at large reproductions of the originals, because they’ve got an honesty and they have got a function in the artmaking.»
— "Watchmen" co-creator Dave Gibbons on #RoyLichtenstein's #PopArt work.«“The real story is, a lot of these comic-book artists had college degrees and just happened to fall into doing something else instead of painting in a studio — they had a different passion in their lives,” [David Barsalou, who maintains a Flickr account, titled "Deconstructing Roy Lichtenstein"] tells The Post. “It’s just a shame they didn’t get the recognition, like the case of Russ Heath. That’s really sad to me.”»
«“What Lichtenstein did was to ‘elevate’ popular art — the comic book — from its cheap, 10-cent origins to the world of gallery art, which is transformative, but more than a little snotty and snobby,” ["Zippy the Pinhead" creator Bill Griffith] says, “especially if one denies or avoids referring to the source.”»
Personally I feel that while the idea of subverting the snobby artwork world where plenty of worthwhile works aren't considered #art is laudable, Lichtenstein's approach does more harm than good by not crediting the source material, and not sharing the fruits of his labour with those whose shoulders and backs he stood on. With how much his work ended up going for, I'd say it all ended up being subverted into just the thing he might've intended to subvert.
