"Woman in a Purple Coat," Henri Matisse, 1937.

In the 1930s, Matisse (1869-1954) was becoming bolder and more simplistic in his painting style. It was also a turbulent period for him personally; his 40-year marriage to his wife Amelie was beginning to fall apart, and he was becoming closer to his assistant, Lydia Delectorskaya, who is painted here.

Here she sits, with a smile, in intensely colorful surroundings. Matisse was always known for his use of intense and flamboyant color, and that's on display here. He would dip his brush in black paint to create the black outlines, and then use the blunt end of his brush to create the white stripes and other white patterns.

Delectorskaya (1910-98) was a Russian refugee who became his constant companion (and possibly mistress) after his divorce in 1939. He left her some of his best paintings, which assured her financial future. His last work, done the day before his death, was a sketch of her.

"Seated Young Woman with an Amber Necklace," Henri Matisse, 1942.

Matisse (1869-1954) was in many ways the father of modern art. A painter, sculptor, and printmaker, he pioneered many new styles and techniques that others followed.

Done in the sunset years of his painting career (his health was restricting his ability to paint), it nonetheless shows some of his strengths. While he doesn't go for exacting detail, there's still a lot of precision in how he depicts the folds of the dress and uses brushstrokes to illustrate the hair. The bold colors against the back background make it pop, and the pattern scratched into the black background make it something graphic, rather than just a backdrop.

Matisse had undergone cancer surgery that almost killed him, and left him dependent on a wheelchair and often bedridden. By now was beginning to shift more to paper cutouts and collage as an art medium. But this lady with her friendly face shows he still had what it took.

"The Red Studio," Henri Matisse, 1911.

Matisse (1869-1954) was one of the great progenitors of Modern art, experimenting with color and form.

This painting, considered one of his finest works, was from a period when he abandoned Fauvism (a style marked by bold colors and sharp, broad outlines) and developed his own individual style based on flattened figures and fields of color.

An interesting thing here is that the lines really aren't lines. Matisse started off with a yellow-painted canvas, then applied the red paint, leaving gaps that formed the lines that outline the room and its furniture. Then the colored portions were painted on top of it.

Matisse kept working and creating art, and in his old age, when he could no longer hold a paintbrush, he created collages of cut construction paper that are still things of beauty.

Matisse (1869-1954) was one of the great pioneers of modern art. Although also a printmaker and sculptor, he is best known as a painter.

This was painted during the Fauvist period, a short-lived style of painting that focused on bright colors with strong black outlines. He also borrows a bit from Cubism here; while it's fairly straightforward, Matisse also ignores perspective. Either the tabletop or the table leg are out of perspective. Cubism was about presenting multiple perspectives at once, as Matisse does here.

Matisse moved through several styles in his long lifetime, and even toward the end, when he could no longer hold a paintbrush, he would work with colored paper cutouts, arranging them as he pleased. He always pushed the envelope!
