  2. "Bowl of Apples on a Table," Henri Matisse, 1916.

Matisse (1869-1954) was one of the great pioneers of modern art. Although also a printmaker and sculptor, he is best known as a painter.

This was painted during the Fauvist period, a short-lived style of painting that focused on bright colors with strong black outlines. He also borrows a bit from Cubism here; while it's fairly straightforward, Matisse also ignores perspective. Either the tabletop or the table leg are out of perspective. Cubism was about presenting multiple perspectives at once, as Matisse does here.

Matisse moved through several styles in his long lifetime, and even toward the end, when he could no longer hold a paintbrush, he would work with colored paper cutouts, arranging them as he pleased. He always pushed the envelope!

From the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA.

  13. Henri Matisse and his heirs: The end of a financial windfall.

Since Henri Matisse's death in 1954, four generations of his family have guarded his vast body of work jealously and with the utmost discretion.

But when the painter's work entered the public domain in January, it ended the lucrative reproduction rights the heirs had enjoyed, as well as their oversight of everything concerning their ancestor.

  14. #HenriMatisse, ‘Joy of Life’. If you have watched the #glassonion on #netflix you may have noticed this painting in some scenes. “Depicting an #landscape filled with #coloured forests, meadows, sea, and #sky and populated by #nude figures, the #artwork shows how Mattisse used colour to express #emotions and his views of #nature.”

‘Le bonheur de vivre’ is regarded as one of the pillars of early modernism. When first exhibited in 1906, it caused a public expression of protest and outrage.

  15. 61 Henri Matisse artworks are donated to the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris.

The museum has received an “extraordinarily generous” donation of 61 works by Henri Matisse that have been kept in the artist’s family until a ‘complete surprise’ donation.

Most of the donated art – which includes paintings, drawings, etchings, lithographs and a sculpture – features the painter’s daughter Marguerite.

(fot.
