"Rise of the Guardians" is still one of my favorite animated movies, but I never had it on disk.

Now I managed to find it online for about 3€ as Bluray. That's quite impressive and I'm happy to add it to my collection.

I'm still disappointed we never got more movies in that franchise.

Iwak #20 – Gel/Givre (Frost)

Iwak c’est Inktober with a keyboard, donc tout le mois d’octobre : un article par jour avec un thème précis.

Il y a dix ans, un film de Dreamworks avait eu son petit succès (trop petit à mon goût) en mettant au goût du jour des légendes populaires occidentales (mais surtout américaines) dans un film d’animation très bien fichu. Il s’agissait des “5 Légendes” (Rise of the Guardians, bien meilleur titre au regard de l’histoire mais bon…) qui figuraient en héros : le Père-Noël, le lièvre de Pâques, le marchand de sable, la fée des dents (la Tooth Fairy même si une Petite Souris est présentée comme la filiale française, hu hu hu) et Jack Frost. Ce dernier est vraiment un truc purement nord-américain que je ne connaissais pas du tout à l’époque, et le film est plutôt centré sur lui avec une histoire très touchante. Et le héros est carrément sympa et cool, avec sa propension à diffuser du givre partout où il passe. J’avais bien aimé voir l’action de Jack Frost dans la manière dont le givre se pose et se diffuse sur une vitre glacée en formant ces jolis dessins en forme de fractales (et je comprends bien comment on peut raconter à des enfants que c’est Jack Frost qui fait ça ).

Le méchant est le Boogeyman ou le Croque-Mitaine, et il est bien flippant !! Le film raconte comment le méchant tente de faire main basse sur les sentiments de peur des enfants, ce qui déstabilise les gardiens qui se rassemblent pour lutter contre. J’avais adoré l’action très soutenue et l’humour vraiment efficace pendant tout le film. Et en plus, l’animation était de très haut niveau. On avait vraiment un truc qui rivalisait pour moi avec un bon Pixar. Et c’était super original d’avoir pioché ainsi dans des mythes populaires qui ne sont pas vraiment portés par des inventions littéraires anciennes, des mythes antiques, des traditions religieuses ou des super-héros plus contemporains.

Le plus drôle était ce Père-Noël aka1 Santa Claus chez les amerloques qui est sans nul doute un Polar Bear2 assumé, avec ses gros bras tatoué, sa bague de pouce et sa grosse beu-bar blanche. Il est sexy à mort, et n’hésite pas à embrasser sur la bouche à la russe, et on ne voit pas une Mère-Noël à l’horizon, c’était assez gonflé de produire un personnage aussi crypto dans un film d’animation, mais Disney a fait bien pire dans ses classiques (Scar, Hadès, Jafar et consorts) même si ce sont presque toujours des méchants.

Was watching #RiseOfTheGuardians in 3D on my PS3 and PlayStation 3D Display and a couple thoughts on this:

1. Either the PS3 or the Blu-ray simply does not have the frame rate for this because this movie is not motion blurred (to be fair, almost none are because that's HARD) and seeing the jumps of things like North's swords is... not great. Or else some scenes are just animated on twos to save money, but when it happens, you know.
2. Absolutely DO NOT try this with LED lighting if you don't want a bad time. LED lights work by blinking really fast and that is NOT synced to a convenient media frequency. Seriously, it's not going to be visible, but it will be visceral. It's kind of funny to think how uncommon LED lighting was just a short while ago when 3D was having its latest heyday. Turning all the lights off helped my eyes adjust to the movie anyway, but I did need to eat something and consider whether I could actually continue.

#Klaus is his origin story, he then grows weary of being Santa but is faced with a very Violent Night that brings him back from the brink. In #RiseOfTheGuardians we see him at his most powerful.

I rewatched Rise of the Guardians today. That movie was wildly underrated. And incredibly meaningful.
