This morning, Child.0 and Partner were getting ready to leave for school. I walked into the kitchen. Child.0 looked up at me but didn't say anything as they were telling Partner something. So, naturally I spoke up.

Child.0 jumped. "How are you so quiet?"

Me: "You looked straight at me."

C.0: "I didn't see you."

Me: "I was clearly using the Mak'tar stealth haze."

C.0: "What's that?"

And that, my friends, is when I had realized I had utterly failed to be a parent. A fifteen year old who didn't know what a stealth haze was or Mak'tar? I should just give up.

Partner, on the other hand, knew exactly what I was talking about it.

Which is why I'm thankful every day they married me.

Spent the last two hours of 2025 watching #GalaxyQuest, the perfect #NewYears movie. Somehow my sister-in-law had never seen it, and was highly entertained!

In #GalaxyQuest there’s a little gag about “go through the chompy crushie things.” It’s clearly a detail from an episode where nobody had a name for that scene. Sigourney Weaver’s character says “This episode was badly written!”

Star Wars Episode 2 has an entire pointless scene of chompy, crushie things. It literally looks like it was shot just to serve as the basis for a level in the corresponding video game.

R2-D2 reveals that he is part cat, by fucking pushing C3PO off a ledge into the chompy crushie things for no reason. C3PO nearly gets destroyed, his head gets stuck on a Roger Roger droid’s body. And then, what? They’re best buds again and they’re gonna go on space adventures for a couple more lifetimes?

Galaxy Quest has a special features spot on dvd.

One feature is they did the entire length of the movie in Thermian speaking overlay. Went to a few favorite spots to see how they dubbed it, and those yielded some giggles.

Best part was when she was standing at the chompers, in the original movie they dubbed 'Screw that' to stay PG, though that's not what was originally filmed. In the Thermian special feature version, it actually said the original (when filmed) line, but in a Thermian-ish way.

They couldn't resist fun any step of the way, it really shows. Their devotion to playfulness is my idea of perfection.

Best. Movie. EVER.

@SynAck I def mostly agree with that, especially the first time I watched it - I bailed after a few eps thinking “this (i.e. Seth) doesn’t know if it wants to be earnest #StarTrek homage or #FamilyGuy in Space”… but I went back to it about a year later & gave it another try

all those issues are still there, but in the end I really enjoyed having something new & Trek-ish to watch that leaned into the funny a little, but also managed the occasional deft turn into pathos (I find that some of the best comedians are very adept at funny… funny… funny… oh crap, they just ripped my heart out!! 😭)

ultimately, I made my peace with it as Seth MacFarlane’s very naked, heart-on-his-sleeve love letter to Star Trek (and #crooners, and #MovieMusicals / #MusicalTheatre…)

maybe the fact that we’ve had #LowerDecks has shifted the Overton window for Trek being more overtly funny? (although of course humour has always been in the mix, right from the #TOS days)
