Fantasy with Friends: Reading Order

Briana and Krysta at Pages Unbound are hosting a fantasy discussion meme this year called Fantasy with Friends. Since fantasy is my favorite genre, I thought it would be fun to take part. This week, their question is:

When reading a favorite fantasy series, which reading order would you recommend? For instance, when reading Narnia, do you think people should go by publication order or by chronological order? Or, if you like to recommend Tolkien, do you think readers should start with LotR or The Hobbit? Feel free to discuss any favorite fantasy series you have!

Very fortunately, the series I tend to read aren’t written like the Narnia or LOTR books, or even the Magic of Recluse. I tried those, but the author’s writing kind of put me to sleep. Then again, I was about 15 when I tried them, so maybe I just need to be a little older.

Similar to the topic of whether I prefer a series or standalones, I just really want however many books it takes to tell a story. So the series I tend to pick up usually tell a full story, and that’s usually in chronological order. I’m aware many authors return to their world and/or characters to tell a different story, but I don’t always pick those up, especially if they don’t follow the same characters. When it comes to the same world but different characters, I like chronological order. History exists on a set timeline in my head.

And then there’s the Discworld books. I’ve only read a handful or so, and most of those in publication order as I was getting acquainted with the characters (I never finished doing that), but the friend who recommended the books to me insisted I read Death’s books first. I never finished doing that, either.

I have to say I do enjoy series that could be read as a series of standalones. Then I feel like I can pick and choose which stories I want to read and disregard the ones that don’t interest me. I love that they never make me feel like I’m losing out.

My preference is usually chronological order if I’m faced with the choice, but I wouldn’t dare recommend how other readers read. For me, preference always wins out over whether some group is a proponent of chronological or publication order. Otherwise I’d rather say to just pick what most piques your interest and go from there!

As I endeavor to wrangle an errant tagging structure of a PowerPoint file towards an accessible PDF file, I find myself pushing the limits of whatever black magic fuels Acrobat.

I will not relent.

I curse the corporate greed, professional incompetence, and ultimately low-grade, mediocre, evil- manifesting through this fiendish abomination of corrupted deviance and fuckery.

I want to say completely in time order, but I want to read from top to bottom but nothing I have found offers this layout.

I want to read the top message on my screen, then the next one down so it flows, not have to flit from the bottom of a message to the top of the one above it.

Somebody please offer this

I highly recommend #LynnKurland's novels, in particular, her #dePiaget and #MacLeod series. Here's the kicker, the two series have a lot of crossovers, too!

What is the genre of the two series? It depends on the novel.

1. The most common is #romance and #romantic (the romantic “genre” isn't necessarily romance per se). Now, we are not talking about romance as most people assume, a girl is head over hills on a hunk guy who is a secret villain or a vampire. (aside: Nothing wrong with that particular sub-genre, I read those, too.)

2. #TimeTravel

3. #Historical

4. #Paranormal

5. #Fantasy

There is also a touch of #family and #relationships here and there.

The first book I've read was #DreamsOfStardust. It was so good, I bought every copy of it I saw and gave away for free to friends and colleagues. I recommend starting with it if you are new with Lynn Kurland's works.

You don't have to worry if you start in the middle, or the latest book. Each book is stand-alone. In some, you'll get hints of the greater universe, in some, you wouldn't even know it unless you read, or have read, the other novels.

For example, you can start with #OneEnchantedEvening and #OneMagicMoment. These are two are like twin books but at the same stand-alone.

Lynn Kurland is an American #author, and the de Piaget and MacLeod series are both set in the United Kingdom. The former is around England, while the latter is around Scotland.

But, trust me, don't look for a chronological order. The entire universe involves time travel here and there with paranormal, too. It is hard to have an anchor. Read the novels in any order you want.
