Today, right now, I could rejoin and claim that I am from Gaza. People could have proof that I am lying, and I’d still be protected by every administrator on the Fediverse.

That is a big problem.

That’s the difference, and it is significant. It is no small thing. When I make a claim, I have proof to back it up. If proof is not enough, then the Fediverse is a scammer’s dream come true.

If you can prove someone is a scammer, yet it is still OK for them to scam and they are protected while every claim proving they’re a scammer is removed — that is a problem.

In one photo, from Facebook (my job, where I work), we had a woman claiming to be a 36-year-old mother of two children, ages 4 and 7. She spaced out the URL in her post, hoping it wouldn’t get flagged by spam filters (it did). The very next day, someone on the Fediverse posted the exact same message, with the same URL. The only differences were that they used a different name, a different profile photo, and claimed to be a 19-year-old girl.

But "Gaza Verified" is still promoting scammers. The problem with scammers is that they take advantage of people's vulnerability — both by falsely representing themselves and by baiting those who wish to help.

There’s a thing called “Gaza Verified” — it’s a scam.

The photos of these so-called people are reused images I’ve seen before in Facebook spam (where I work). At least one of them I’ve personally seen on Reddit, before it was taken down.

The accounts promoting this are sharing the same URLs that known scammers have been spamming — both here on the Fediverse and elsewhere.
