I just urged Congress to pass the Latonya Reeves Freedom Act (S.4865 / H.R.9401), which would protect the right of disabled people to live in our communities and receive care at home instead of being placed in institutions.

I'm writing this from a nursing home. I'm 34, blind, autistic, and multiply disabled — and I don't need this level of care. I'm here because community-based services weren't available to me. That's exactly what this bill is meant to fix.

So, the DOJ's recent memo re: the ADA's integration mandate isn't getting nearly enough attention (of course not... it has to do with disability rights).

The basic gist is that the mandate says that disabled people should be integrated into their communities unless it's completely unfeasible, and that, in turn, is used as the base justification for home care and community care to be mandated over nursing homes or other forms of institutionalization. The added side effect is that home/community care is cheaper (costs tax payers less) and results in overall better outcomes than the alternative.

The memo is an invitation for red states to stop paying for this kind of care, which will inevitably lead to law suits that will reach the SCOTUS. You can see where this is going, right? This is the first step in MAGA's/MAHA's desire to take people like me out of our homes. Remember - the OG Nazis did the same thing and tortured and killed 200,000+ disabled people.

This should absolutely be raising alarm bells, but because the disabled are always (intentionally) out of sight, out of mind (despite being the largest marginalized community), no one seems to give a shit.

Dear Sen/Rep -

I want you to take a firm stand against the groundwork this Republican Administration is laying to return disability to a medical model of treatment in institutions.

I worry, that this Republican Administration wants to return to the days when government entities felt no obligation to support people with disabilities, and I want you standing proudly and frequently with disability advocates. I want to see you in the news and on social media taking a stand in support of funding for mainstream support structures for those who are differentially abled.

Our society should support those with disabilities with how we design our buildings, our transportation networks, our educational programs, and our workplace habits.

I want you to be a public push-back on any efforts to make disabled Americans some sort of problem that needs to be hidden in an institution. I want you to stand firm in your support of the Olmstead ruling and in your support of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The United States has more than enough wealth to make sure every American can thrive. I want my tax dollars supporting more social services, and I want you to lead on this effort.
