  1. Y Mynyddoedd Duon (the Black Mountains) in South Wales for today's #StandingStoneSunday

The wrecked Pen y Beacon stone circle, situated at the foot of the summit of the same name (Hay Bluff in English). Only one sizable stone remains standing, although there are numerous smaller stones buried in the turf. Tremendous views and sometimes an ice-cream van.

This visit May 2012 while walking Offa's Dyke Path.

  6. Something different for today's #StandingStoneSunday:

The Whet Stone, a glacial erratic boulder on Hergest Ridge, Herefordshire. The stone is supposed to go down to the nearby spring to drink at midnight, like the nearby Four Stones stone circle over the border in Radnorshire.

Visited March 2012 while walking Offa's Dyke Path.

  11. Borderland for today's #StandingStoneSunday

This is Carreg y Big close to the Welsh border in Shropshire. The Bronze Age stone stands just across a field from the (much later) Offa's Dyke earthwork. Although the stone is in England, just, the Welsh name appears to mean 'peaked stone' or 'pointed stone'. Very happy to be corrected on that!

Visited April 2011 while walking Offa's Dyke Path. Portrait, needs a click.
