  1. Wales being typically Welsh. I love days like this, listening to the rain, and having the wood burner going with no desire to do anything but let time flow over me gracefully.

  2. One of the many Neolithic chambered long barrows around Y Mynyddoedd Duon (the Black Mountains) in South Walesfor today's #StandingStoneSunday offering.

Pen-y-Wyrlod above the Afon Gwy/River Wye; the long barrow itself has been ploughed down, leaving these stones from its chamber exposed.

    This visit May 2012.

  3. Y Mynyddoedd Duon (the Black Mountains) in South Wales for today's #StandingStoneSunday

The wrecked Pen y Beacon stone circle, situated at the foot of the summit of the same name (Hay Bluff in English). Only one sizable stone remains standing, although there are numerous smaller stones buried in the turf. Tremendous views and sometimes an ice-cream van.

This visit May 2012 while walking Offa's Dyke Path.

  9. The fabulous Nant Tarw (Bull's Brook) stone circles for today's #StandingStoneSunday

A pair circles made up of small stones, as well as a three stone alignment, located in a shallow valley to the north of Y Mynydd Du mountains.

Visited on a cold, frozen day in January 2011. The boggy ground near the circles was hard with ice.

  10. Took a trip to #BannauBrycheiniog and a very cold and wet #LlynSyfaddon / #LlangorseLake today. You needed a boat to get to the boat hire and a pair of ice skates for the Lake trail, but it was still very pretty, peaceful and atmospheric..... I seem to have caught sight of the first flight of the Welsh Space Program on the way home 🤔

  12. Good morning, Fediverse! Having a couple of nights away in the beautiful #BannauBrycheiniog, #BreconBeacons, for some rest and relaxation. Even though it's short, it's our first break since April, so much needed!

  13. The second full day of our visit to #BannauBrycheiniog was devoted to visiting #PenYFan, the tallest #peak in south #Wales. This was a very nice #walk of 15 km with some steep ascents and descents but no climbing.

Starting from the car park, a path started to climb gently upwards. You can see Pen Y Fan on the horizon near the centre of the image.

  14. In the afternoon of the first full day in #BannauBrycheiniog, we travelled to #Crickhowell or #Crughywel to climb #TableMountain, which is also the location of an #IronAge #fort. So, equipped with my #OrdnanceSurveyMap we made steady progress up the slopes, on #roads and then #footpaths, often across #farmland. The total walk was 12.5 km.

Approaching the summit, you can see that the area is covered with #ferns.

  19. Looking at the way photographers photograph moving water is quite interesting. In order to give the impression of rapid, gushing motion, the exposure should be longer and so, rather than photographing in #AutomaticMode, it is better to use #ShutterPriority and adjust #ShutterSpeed to achieve the desired effect.

Here the shutter speed in automatic mode is 1/100 s.

  20. Fantastic scorching day on the #BeaconsWay today, on the always quiet hills (deserted) of Fforest Fawr between Craig-y-Nos and Storey Arms.

Started off on Carreg Cadno, which I'm happily translating as Fox Rocks. Appropriate as my only companion at the station earlier was a fox.

A revisit to Maen Madoc standing stone and the Bronze Age cairn on Fan Llia. First time I've been up here since the official renaming of the National Park.

  21. The wonderful Cerrig Duon stone circle and Maen Mawr outlier for today's #StandingStoneSunday.

One of my favourite stone circles, it sits in the upper valley of the Afon Tawe (which meets the sea at Abertawe/Swansea). Maen Mawr is not part of the circle, standing just outside it; there are diminutive stone rows aligned on Maen Mawr. The valley and mountains above (Y Mynydd Du) are rich with Bronze Age archaeology.

    This visit June 2010.

  22. A fine 'playing card' stone for today's #StandingStoneSunday (Aubrey Burl's term for a standing stone which is a thin, flat slab): Waun Leuci, partway up the side of hill in Y Mynydd Du, an area rich with prehistoric archaeology.

Nearby is the wonderful Cerrig Duon stone circle with the Maen Mawr outlier and stone rows, round barrows and an enigmatic stone setting. It stands above the nascent Afon Tawe.

    Visited June 2010.

  23. A little stone in Bannau Brycheiniog for today's #StandingStoneSunday

Lower Neuadd stands in reedy grasses close to the Lower Neuadd reservoir, in the upper reaches of Cwm Taf Fechan (one of the sources of Afon Taf). There are some fine cairns further up the valley, as well as the magnificently placed monuments on the summits of Corn Du and Pen y Fan.

This visit on a very hot circuit of the mountains, May 2010. Portrait, needs a click.
