  1. When #ElonMusk acquired US citizenship in 2002, he would have sworn this #OathOfAllegiance

“I hereby declare, on oath… that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same… and that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.”

Justia says, “Any naturalized person who takes this oath with mental reservations or conceals or misrepresents beliefs, affiliations, and conduct, which under the law disqualify one for naturalization, is subject, upon these facts being shown in a proceeding brought for the purpose, to have his certificate of naturalization cancelled.”

Elon’s apparent violation of election laws by bribing American citizens to sign his petition and register to vote demonstrate that he does not now support the Constitution or our laws. It would be interesting to test the naturalization law by acting to revoke his.

  2. I've been saying for years I need to get some citizenship to feel secure as the world steers politically to the right, and I'm an under-educated immigrant with increasing disability, but it's hard to explain to kiwis what it means for an Irish person to go to a civil ceremony and say an #OathOfAllegiance to their Pommy King.

  3. I'm proud of a seventeenth century ancestor of mine, William Bevington, a Quaker from Warwickshire, who in 1672 was released after years of imprisonment, after finally receiving a General Pardon.

His crime? He simply but determinedly refused to swear an #OathOfAllegiance to the then #KingCharles.

I suppose that not having to fear prison this time around is at least some mark of progress, but not sure if the #DailyMail would agree.

My middle son, Jed, bears William's name in remembrance.

  4. Despite being asked to swear fealty in an oath of allegiance to the King and all his heirs, many, especially the young, are less than excited by the coronation. So on 6 May 2023, what are good republicans to do? | David Goff

  5. "But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil." [Matthew 5:34-37]
