  1. This is DunsPlayFest's youngest trustee, Jamie who has been part of community theatre since he was eight. He’s a regular onstage with Duns Players and at Berwickshire High School where he is currently doing Highers. He recently won the NODA North Councillor’s Rising Star Award.

He is also a writer/director whose play opened last year's DunsPlayFest, its sequel is booked for next year's festival.

  3. Our high school in Duns has an excellent music department. One of the things they do is to host a different top-rated brass band every year for a concert, giving youngsters (from S1-S6) the chance of playing alongside some of the pieces and giving senior students the experience of performing their exam pieces in public as solos. The concerts are always excellent.

  4. Currently reading David Gwyn's "Coming of the Railway" including the snippet that Telford surveyed a route for an iron railway between Glasgow and Berwick in 1810 for landed gentry in the Scottish Borders wanting to reduce cost of coal and lime and to open up a market for their grain.

  5. Another favourite image from my 30+ year photographic career. Continuing with UK landscape, this is looking North along the coast from St Abb's Head in Berwickshire, Scotland.

  6. Berwickshire High School has a remarkable music department. Last term was a brilliant production of Chicago, followed 2 weeks later with a Christmas concert. This Burns concert is a new venture and will feature a wide range of soloists and ensembles from across the school. They always present a good show with impressive young talent to the extent that locals with no connection with the school are also regularly in the audience.

  11. It is looking hopeful that John Lamont (our Tory lobby-fodder MP in the Scottish Borders) is going to loose his seat. Just got this up in Duns. I'm leafletting tomorrow if anyone wants to join us.

  12. Met (for the first time) my local SNP candidate for the GE yesterday, David Wilson who is campaigning hard to oust the Conservative John Lamont.

David is a buoyant breath of fresh air who actually answers questions sensibly without recourse to sound bites or party pre-vetted lines. Such a contrast to Tory lobby-fodder Lamont.

  13. Interesting resource here to see how your MP has voted on motions related to climate change.

Sad to see that the 11 votes that John Lamont attended he abstained once and voted against positive climate action 10 times.

Don't vote Conservative if you care about climate...

  14. The story behind Duns Playfest. How creativity in the Scottish Borders has been nurtured, helped by Creative Scotland and other funders, to form what is becoming an annual marker on Scotland's cultural year, a showcase for new theatrical drama.

  18. Duns Playfest is an annual festival of new drama held every May in the Scottish Borders. Last year one of the shows was cancelled, but we were treated to some excellent music by this chap who lives locally and walked in off the street by chance with his guitar (don't know his name). A brilliant serendipitous evening. Photo was taken by local photographer Yid Whellans.

  22. ‘The White Hoose’

If you're ever find yourself travelling along the East Coast Main Railway Line, look out for this salmon fishermen's bothy. It's perched about a mile or so north of the English-Scottish border, atop a prominent level spur, overlooking the rocky shore at Lamberton Skerrs. You'll only catch a glimpse of it. It was a bothy or 'shiel' for salmon fishermen, and a rusty winch on the foreshore hints that so ...
