It is strange that my mastodon-via-browser screen shows some attachments as a pale rectangle with "not available" in the middle, but when I click on them they do open in a new tab.

So, if it says "not available" it may be mistaken!

@BathysphereHat To find interesting people, I just drop in on the local and global feeds, and when someone says something interesting I check out their other posts. You can check hashtags for things you find "cool" - start with anything you think might be used, but also watch for the ones others use.
An example of hashtag use: to ask for advice, use these; to see what others already have asked, and maybe some answers, click the hash icon to search for them.

@Loukas I found it hard to decide, because there are good arguments for each.

When I started, I did not know about the Fediverse, and some starting elsewhere in the Fediverse may not know about Mastodon. #NewbieHelp would work across the platforms, and can link to hashtags both for the fediverse AND for the specific programs/apps. So as well as MastodonHelp there would be PixelfedHelp and PeertubeHelp etc., with some posts tagged with NewbieHelp as well as the main hashtag.

@Loukas I see #FediHelp winning. Nevertheless, I'd go with #NewbieHelp or #MastodonHelp, because I don't think the *proper* newbies know what "Fedi" is. (I didn't quite get the concept when I joined myself.)

When somebody I follow replies to a thread, even if I'm not viewing that thread because I don't follow the originator, I want to see the reply. If it's out of context, I can click on that reply and find the rest of the thread. This doesn't seem to happen. I seem to get some replies, but maybe those are boosted separately by people I follow. How is it supposed to work?

Apparently I need to learn how to add alt text. The bird site, for all of its failings, did prompt you when you posted an image if you want to add some.
Anyway, the alt text for this picture would be "a calico cat resting against a full power strip with various wires coming out of it"

Being newish here I joined three different servers prior to understanding I could follow anyone from any server from one server. Does it make sense to consolidate my accounts or is it better to keep the accounts living on separate servers? #newbie #newbiehelp

So, it turned out it found it, but I was confused because it said "0 people in the last 2 days" and I think I am a person. Searching for a random string of characters indeed does not find anything. So now my #newbiehelp question is why does it say "0 people"? Is it just because I am not included in the potential count?

I don't understand mastodon's search algorithm. I searched for a hashtag that I had myself written in my introduction yesterday, and it did not find any. This makes me sad because it makes me not trust that I can find anything. #NewbieHelp

New users are encouraged to search for hashtags to focus their timeline on topics that interest them. I’ve managed to follow #Photography using the web browser version of Mastodon but don’t see any + icon when I search using the mobile app or Metatext. Is this feature available? #NewbieHelp

Feel like I've gone up a level as I've now spent time not only adding bits to profile but sorting lists on here!

Possibly just me but if there is anyone else trying to work out how to add to a #List you've created I found it by clicking the 3 dots on the users profile you want to add to a list.

(This was on PC web browsing so could easily be elsewhere on all the different app options)
