If you're new to #mastodon and on a smaller instance, profiles that you find might seem kind of empty. Your instance hasn't seen their feed yet because no one on your server follows them!

You can see their full profile pretty easily so that you can decide if you want to follow them and start bringing their posts to your instance.

When you're viewing their profile on their server, clicking on "Follow" will prompt you for your home server.

I have to be honest, I'm still a little bit confused about how different fediverse platforms do and don't connect to each other - and whether it makes sense to try to do everything with just one account on one platform, or to have separate accounts on all of them.. but I'm happy to be here nonetheless. Yesterday i posted a question regarding how people find their instance

It gathered a lot of responses which thought me a lot and i thought i might summarize it here (now that ive ((almost)) moved)

I heard 2 different ways of using madtodon. Stay in a big server and mold it to your liking on your own. Mainly using lists and the following feed only

and the other was to take your time and move a bunch often starting in a large server and ending in a smaller instance. Most of these people found their instances organically, through friends, irl acquaintances, specific focussed interests, looking at their following list or just trial and error.

My own takeaway is that i like having a local timeline for discovery aswell, so i prefer smaller servers. Giving me another experience than the main “all” timeline.

But i think most of all just ask people. The response i got to that question was really crazy to me, especially since i had no mutuals from other places that moved here. I wasnt involved in big online spaces.
Just using a hashtag (i used #askfedi) brought my post in front of a bunch of people that the brought it in front of others and i got to hear a lot of different people give me their tips abd perspectives

@horqua @Christhewriter I suggest using Hashtags-for example-when I post about the NY Mets, I put as many Mets hashtags as I can-not that it will guarantee followers-but it will improve visibility. Also, based on your App-you can also follow hashtags, and hence will see others posts on that topic, if they use that hashtag. This will introduce you to other people too. Good luck-and welcome to the platform-it takes time to find your “tribe”. Be patient-and I don’t have a bazillion followers either-

Important update to my "How-To" on domain-blocking by individual Mastodon users, a useful tweak to keep the vibes right (because your admin won't necessarily block out as much as you well might prefer).

TL;DR: When preparing a blocked_domains.csv file for upload to your Mastodon account, make sure to insert the the " @ " sign, in front of the server domains you wish to block.

I also modified the article's lede, to wit:

Problem: Organized troll brigades are harassing outspoken people on Mastodon. If you ever express support for marginalized communities, you are likely to attract annoying DMs and replies — at best, a nuisance you don’t need.

Don’t be fooled by the false sense of security there: there is a lot more harassment than meets the eye. Many newer and established instances in Mastodon social network do not have extensive block lists. Also, there are new instances cropping up all the time. Admins are very, very busy as it is - they cannot be expected to necessarily stay on top of the moderation requirements of every user.

Solution: Mastodon software permits individual users to block domains.

Without any prompting by me, the topic of Tw*exit came up at Thanksgiving dinner. One person said she loved it and was sad to see things possibly fall apart and she was gonna try Post, and I suggested #Mastodon.

I mentioned a few things, but the following things seemed to resonate:

the lack of ads, lack of an algorithm controlling what you see, and *local control of what you see* (server/local blocks, filters)

These are non-technical people. This stuff matters.
