MUMBLES: ‘My sons were shocked and scared’ — NHS doctor speaks out after racist abuse at skate park as police launch hate crime investigation
A Swansea NHS doctor has spoken of his shock and sadness after his family were subjected to racist abuse at Mumbles Skate Park — with his sons, aged five and two, present when three teenagers on bikes and scooters directed racial slurs at them.
Dr Haroon Ali described the incident in a public Facebook post on Saturday 16 May. He said he was leaving the skate park with his two young sons when the teenagers — whom he estimated to be aged between 11 and 13 — approached and shouted a racial slur at them. When he challenged them, they repeated it multiple times before riding off gleefully.
“My sons were both shocked and scared, as well as confused about what was happening,” Dr Ali wrote, describing the moment his young boys asked him what the teenagers had been saying and why they were shouting at them. “I just feel deeply sad about this ugly event,” he added.
Dr Ali said he was born and raised in Swansea and has worked as an NHS doctor serving the city for 12 years, with his family contributing to the community for generations. He said that in all his time in Swansea he had never experienced such an overtly racist incident — let alone one directed at him in front of his children.
In his post, Dr Ali also addressed the parents of the teenagers directly. “To the parents of these boys: I hope you are proud of yourselves for raising individuals who feel comfortable spewing this kind of vicious hatred in our community,” he wrote.
Dr Ali also said he believed certain unnamed local politicians had contributed to a rise in overt racism in the area, and called on them to stand firm in their opposition to it.
South Wales Police confirmed yesterday that officers had received a report of an alleged hate crime incident near Mumbles Skate Park on Saturday 16 May. The report is currently under investigation.
One of the first politicians to respond publicly was Francesca O’Brien MS — the Reform UK member for Gŵyr Abertawe who was this week named as her party’s shadow minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning. O’Brien, a former Mumbles councillor, described herself as “genuinely horrified” by what had happened.
“Let me be absolutely clear — racism is intolerable, unacceptable and has no place whatsoever in Mumbles, Swansea or anywhere else in our society,” O’Brien said. “Racism is not a left-wing issue or a right-wing issue — it is a societal issue, and every decent person should be united in condemning it and eradicating it wherever it appears.”
She said she had previously raised concerns about anti-social behaviour at the skate park during her time as a Mumbles councillor, and that Mumbles Community Council — which owns and manages the facility — had recommended CCTV coverage at the site following repeated incidents. She said she would contact the community council to ask for an update.
O’Brien issued a direct invitation to Dr Ali to work with her on a community response. “I would personally like to invite Dr Haroon Ali to work collaboratively with me in leading a constructive community response to this incident,” she said. “This cannot simply become another angry online debate that achieves nothing.”
Mumbles community councillor Ian Scott said he intended to raise the incident and wider concerns about the skate park at the community council’s full council meeting on Tuesday. The community council owns the skate park and has previously received reports of anti-social behaviour at the site.
The skate park itself has a long history. The land was leased from Swansea Council to Mumbles Community Council in 2021, following years of campaigning by local skaters and families. National Lottery funding of more than £270,000 was secured in 2022 — overcoming what the community council at the time described as numerous delays and legal wrangles — and the park officially opened in February 2023, costing nearly £350,000 in total. A community consultation on the park’s future development was launched last year.
The park has become a popular destination for skateboarders, BMX riders, scooter users and families. Saturday’s incident — and the anti-social behaviour concerns that preceded it — will now add a new dimension to the community council’s deliberations about its future.
Anyone with information about the incident at Mumbles Skate Park on Saturday 16 May is asked to contact South Wales Police on 101, quoting reference 2600152970. Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

GOWER: Only four locals took part last year — can Swansea’s own backyard event tempt more to take the plunge this June?
Hundreds of athletes will descend on Gower on 20 June for the third Gritty Rascals Swimrun Gower — an endurance event that takes competitors on a continuous journey of running and open-water swimming along one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in Britain.
And yet last year, only four people from the local area entered — meaning the vast majority of those experiencing the Gower coast from the water and the clifftops were travelling from elsewhere in the UK or further afield.
Organisers are hoping to change that. “We have competitors travel from across the UK and Europe to compete and this year we’re keen to welcome more local athletes to enter,” said Gary Pavitt, founder of Gritty Rascals Events.

Competitors run in their wetsuits and swim in their trainers, alternating between cross-country running and open-water swimming throughout the entire race — without changing kit.
This year’s event offers three course lengths. The Sprint Course (12km) is aimed at first-timers and newcomers to the sport. The Gritty Course (21km) offers a half-marathon equivalent for those wanting a stiff challenge.
The Full Course (41km) — starting at Rhossili Bay and finishing in Mumbles — is the ultimate test, and has this year been designated an ÖTILLÖ Merit Race, allowing competitors to earn global ranking points towards the Swimrun World Championships.

(Image: Gritty Rascals Events)The Full Course takes competitors on a route most locals will recognise stretch by stretch — a technical swim from Tears Point to Mewslade Bay, cliff top running to Port Eynon, a crossing of Port Eynon Bay, then on through Oxwich, around Tor Point, into Pwll Du, across to Brandy Cove, Caswell Bay, Langland Bay and Rotherslade before a final climb up Mumbles Hill to the finish line.
Competitor Stacey Bramhall, who is also involved in promoting the event, said the experience of seeing Gower from both the coastal path and the water was unlike anything else.
“There is honestly nothing quite like the perspective of seeing Gower’s beauty from the coast path and the water,” she said. “The sense of achievement when you finish the race makes it all 100% worth doing.”
A competitor swims underwater during the Gritty Rascals Swimrun Gower event, still wearing their race vest and goggles. (Image: Gritty Rascals Events)For those nervous about the swimming sections, the organisers point to an extensive water safety team who are in the water throughout. “We have a huge support team who are in the water for every stroke to support swimmers whether it’s their first swimrun or fifth,” said Pavitt.
Transport to the start lines is provided, with all courses finishing back in Mumbles. The event hub, registration and finish line are all based there, giving spectators a base for the day.
The Gritty Rascals Swimrun Gower takes place on Saturday 20 June 2026. Registration is open now at grittyrascals.com.

MUMBLES: Plans unveiled for new £4.5m marine sports centre at Knab Rock — funded by 12 luxury flats on the site of the historic yacht club
Plans for a major new marine sports centre on the Mumbles waterfront have been submitted to Swansea Council – alongside proposals for 12 luxury flats on the site of the existing Mumbles Yacht Club to help fund the development.
The “Centre for Marine Sporting Excellence” would be built at Knab Rock, next to Verdi’s café, just yards from the popular slipway.
It would include training and coaching facilities for sailing, rowing and coastal sports, a tidal bathing pool, boat and equipment storage, public toilets, a Changing Places facility and flexible community rooms.
An annotated aerial visualisation of the proposed scheme at Knab Rock, showing the new Centre for Marine Sporting Excellence, tidal bathing pool, future half-tide harbour and the proposed MYC Apartments on the existing Mumbles Yacht Club site across Mumbles Road. Picture: Huw Griffiths Architects LtdThe centre would also house a 120-seater function room – described in the plans as suitable for conferences, training events and weddings.
But to help pay for it, the existing Mumbles Yacht Club building across Mumbles Road would be demolished – and replaced with 12 luxury mezzanine apartments above an undercroft car park.
A visualisation of the proposed MYC Apartments block, designed to be partly built into the limestone cliff face on the existing Mumbles Yacht Club site. Picture: Huw Griffiths Architects LtdA pedestrian’s view of the proposed MYC Apartments from Mumbles Road, with Verdi’s café visible to the right. Picture: Huw Griffiths Architects LtdDocuments submitted to Swansea Council show that the apartments – 10 standard flats and two penthouse suites – would be expected to sell for between £500,000 and £650,000 each, generating an estimated £6.3 million to £6.5 million.
That money would help fund the marine centre, which is currently estimated to cost £4.5 million to build.
Mumbles Yacht Club, founded in the 1930s, is also home to Mumbles Rowing Club, founded in the 1880s – a centre of excellence for coastal sculling that attracts Team GB athletes.
Together, the clubs have around 350 to 400 members.
An aerial visualisation showing the proposed Centre for Marine Sporting Excellence (centre) and the MYC Apartments block (left) set against the Mumbles cliffs. Picture: Huw Griffiths Architects LtdThe yacht club has held a public consultation that drew more than 500 responses, with almost all in support of a new watersports centre, according to the club.
Commodore Richard Woffinden said the club was excited about the future. “There’s a long way to go but we are really excited about the future of Mumbles Yacht Club and our rowing club,” he said. “It would be great to be part of a centre where clubs of all sorts can work together to create opportunities for our community to join us on the water.”
The proposals also flag potential future ambitions for the site – including a half-tide harbour and a tidal swimming pool – as part of a wider vision for enhancing the Mumbles waterfront.
The club has indicated it may also explore grant funding to upgrade the proposed centre into a national-level coaching facility for Wales and the UK.
The proposed Centre for Marine Sporting Excellence viewed from the bay. Picture: Huw Griffiths Architects LtdPlans submitted to the council acknowledge the significant constraints of the site.
The yacht club building lies within the Mumbles Conservation Area, while the proposed apartment site sits within the Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (now known as the Gower National Landscape).
The flats would be partly built into the limestone cliff face – a designated Safeguarded Limestone Resource and an internationally recognised dark sky community, requiring strict controls on lighting.
The Grade II listed Bristol Channel Yacht Club sits just 30 metres away from the proposed apartment block, and the marine sports centre site is within Flood Zone 3 – meaning major flood risk constraints apply.
Council planning officers have responded with a mixed verdict on the proposals.
Officers said they applauded the aspirations to provide a new high-quality Centre for Marine Sporting Excellence, recognising its potential community and sporting benefits.
But they raised significant concerns about the principle of developing 12 luxury private flats on land that extends outside the Local Development Plan settlement boundary – which would normally only be permitted as “enabling development” with substantial heritage benefits.
The officers also said insufficient information had been provided to justify the scale, massing, siting and design of the buildings, or to demonstrate proper compliance with placemaking principles.
Concerns were also raised about lighting impacts on the Gower’s dark sky designation, parking levels, residential amenity, green infrastructure and the robustness of the proposed enabling development model.
The proposal also appears to be contrary to TAN 15 – Welsh Government planning guidance on flood risk.
The yacht club will now respond to the points raised, develop a business plan and explore funding in more detail.
The plans come at a time when several other major waterfront proposals are under development across Swansea Bay. A separate tidal pool is being proposed near the Civic Centre as part of a major transformation by Urban Splash, while Eden Project-style proposals from Xanadoo are also being explored for a Swansea site.
The application is currently at the pre-application stage with reference 2026/0063/PRE on Swansea Council’s planning portal.
A formal planning application is yet to be submitted.

NEATH: Bonnie Tyler recovering after emergency surgery in Portugal — as fans send get-well wishes to the girl from Skewen
Bonnie Tyler is recovering in hospital after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal.
The 74-year-old Welsh icon – born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Neath – was admitted to Faro Hospital in the Algarve, where she has owned a home since 1988.
Reports suggest she had been experiencing severe abdominal pain before seeking medical help, and was taken in for urgent surgery to treat an intestinal perforation.
A spokesperson said the surgery had gone well. “We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery,” they said. “The surgery went well and she is now recuperating.”
The spokesperson added that family, friends and fans would be wishing her well. “We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery,” they said.
Tyler is currently in the intermediate care unit of the hospital’s emergency department, with her condition described as stable.
Born and raised in Skewen, Tyler now shares her time between her home in Mumbles and the Algarve.
Born into a coal mining family in 1951, she grew up in a council house in Skewen before being discovered by talent scout Roger Bell at a Swansea club in the mid-1970s.
She launched her recording career with Lost in France in 1976, but it was Total Eclipse of the Heart in 1983 that made her a global superstar – spending two weeks at number one in the UK and four weeks at the top of the US charts.
The song has since become one of the best-selling singles of all time, with worldwide sales in excess of six million copies – and last year it passed the one billion streams mark on Spotify.
Her distinctive husky voice – one of the most recognisable in pop history – was the result of a throat operation in the mid-1970s to remove vocal nodules. Defying doctors’ orders to rest her voice during recovery, she spoke anyway, and accidentally created her trademark sound.
Among her other major hits are It’s a Heartache, which reached number three on the US Billboard Hot 100, and Holding Out for a Hero from the 1984 film Footloose.
She represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, finishing 19th with Believe in Me.
Three-times Grammy-nominated Tyler was appointed MBE in the 2022 Birthday Honours for services to music and has been named a Freeman of Neath Port Talbot.
No further details have been released about Tyler’s expected recovery time or when she may be discharged from hospital.

MUMBLES: Banking Hub opens today — and Pembroke Dock confirmed for June
Banking services are returning to two more communities across south and west Wales – with Mumbles opening its new banking hub this morning and Pembroke Dock confirming its hub will open in early June.
The Mumbles Banking Hub opened its doors for the first time today at Unit 6, Castleton Walk Arcade, Newton Road, Mumbles, SA3 4AX.
The hub will be open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm – with community bankers from Barclays attending on Wednesdays, Lloyds Banking Group on Thursdays and NatWest on Fridays. Monday and Tuesday schedules are still to be confirmed.
Mumbles County Councillor Will Thomas, who confirmed the opening, said it was great news for the community and described it as returning banking services to the village.
The Mumbles hub was first recommended last year after high street banking services continued to disappear from the area, leaving residents and businesses without face-to-face banking locally.
Meanwhile in Pembrokeshire, Pembroke Dock Town Council has confirmed that its new banking hub will be sited in Pembroke Dock library, with an opening date expected in early June.
The council said the exact opening date would be shared in due course and urged residents from across the county to make use of the service.
Banking hubs are a national initiative designed to replace lost high street bank branches with a shared facility, where customers of multiple banks can carry out everyday transactions and speak to their own bank’s community banker on a rotating schedule.
The model has been rolled out across south-west Wales in recent months – with Morriston, Gorseinon, Porthcawl and Ystradgynlais all receiving hubs following community campaigns.
Not every community that has applied for a hub has been successful. Plaid MS Sioned Williams challenged cash access company Link over Pontardawe’s exclusion from the programme – a decision that angered local campaigners.
Banking hubs are operated by Cash Access UK and are recommended by Link, the cash access network, following an assessment of local need.
The assessment takes into account the number of bank branch closures in an area, the availability of alternative cash access points, and the demographics of the local population.
Mumbles and Pembroke Dock both qualify on the grounds of multiple branch closures in recent years, leaving communities without convenient access to in-person banking services.
For Mumbles residents, the hub on Newton Road is open from today. No appointment is needed for general counter services.
For Pembroke Dock residents, further details on the opening date and schedule will be published by the town council in the coming weeks.

SWANSEA: Thieves steal Blackpill Lido sprinklers days before bank holiday opening — leaving families facing wait
Thieves have struck at one of Swansea’s most popular free family attractions just days before its summer opening, stealing the distinctive sprinklers from Blackpill Lido and forcing a delay that will disappoint thousands of families planning a bank holiday visit.
The sprinklers – which help keep visitors cool in the sunshine during the lido’s busy summer season – were taken from the site on Wednesday. Police have been informed and CCTV footage is being checked to help identify those responsible.
The lido had been due to open for the summer on Saturday 2 May, with council staff spending the week carrying out checks and repairs in preparation. Instead, visitors arriving this weekend will find it closed, with the opening now pushed back by at least a week.
Tracey McNulty, Swansea Council’s Head of Cultural Services, Parks and Cleansing, said the council was working urgently to find a solution. “We’re disappointed and upset that this has happened and we’d like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while we organise a fix that will allow us to open the lido safely as soon as possible,” she said.
She urged anyone with information to come forward. “The sprinklers were stolen from the site on Wednesday, and we’d urge anyone who might be able to help recover them to contact the police. We’re checking CCTV footage to see if they can help us identify the thieves,” she said.
She added that the sprinklers were distinctive and would have been difficult to remove unnoticed. “The sprinklers are distinctive and the two larger ones are quite heavy. They would have had to be lifted into a van or larger vehicle so it’s quite possible that someone would have seen it happening.”
Council teams are now working to create a temporary fix for the holes left where the sprinklers should be, so the lido can be used safely once the repair is complete. Once that work is finished, it will take a further three days to fill the pool area – meaning an opening date of at least a week away.
McNulty said the council remained committed to getting the lido open as quickly as possible. “Blackpill Lido is a fantastic free family destination, and we are doing all we can to resolve the issues and get the lido open. Although we are organising a temporary fix, we’re committed to replacing the sprinklers as soon as we can.”
Blackpill Lido sits on the seafront at Blackpill on the edge of Swansea Bay, and is one of the city’s most-loved free outdoor spaces during the summer months. The wide shallow pool is particularly popular with young children and their families during warm weather, and forms part of a wider package of free waterfront attractions in the bay area.
The theft comes as the council has been investing significantly in the bay area, with ambitious plans including padel courts, a zip wire and a year-round lido among proposals being considered for the future of Swansea Bay.
South Wales Police is investigating the theft. Anyone who may have seen something suspicious at the site on Wednesday, or who has any information about the whereabouts of the sprinklers, is asked to contact South Wales Police by calling 101, or to report anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

MUMBLES: Raft race returns for 40th anniversary as event prepares to showcase revamped seafront
The race takes place on Saturday 19 July, starting and finishing at Knab Rock at noon. Teams compete on homemade rafts — often elaborately costumed — paddling a course off the Mumbles seafront while spectators line the promenade.
The event was first held in the 1980s and has run most years since, becoming one of the most recognisable fixtures on the Mumbles summer calendar. Last year’s race was cancelled due to bad weather, making the 40th anniversary edition all the more anticipated among organisers and regulars alike.
At the most recent event to go ahead, teams collectively raised more than £10,000 for the RNLI. Organisers are aiming to surpass that figure this year, with the milestone anniversary expected to draw larger crowds and more entries from across South Wales.
Teams and their homemade rafts line up at the start of a previous Mumbles Raft Race, with spectators packed along the seafront.
(Image: RNLI / Adam Gilbert)Tony Bowen, a Mumbles RNLI crew member and one of the race organisers, said the event had become a cornerstone of the local community.
“The raft race is a big part of Mumbles,” he said. “It’s a great day where people get together, laugh and support the RNLI. Reaching 40 years is a real milestone, and every pound raised helps us carry on saving lives at sea.”
This year’s event will take place against the backdrop of Mumbles’ transformed seafront. Swansea Council’s coastal flood defence scheme, which has reshaped the promenade over several years of construction, gives spectators clear sightlines along the bay — making it one of the most watchable settings the race has had in its four-decade history.
Alongside the racing, the day will include a lifeboat demonstration giving the public the chance to see the station’s vessels in action close up, water safety advice, choral entertainment, and further shoreside activities suitable for families.
Mumbles RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat Roy Barker IV (RNLI 16-27) alongside the station’s inshore lifeboat at Mumbles Pier — both vessels will feature in a demonstration at this year’s raft race. (Image: RNLI / Adam Gilbert)The RNLI’s Mumbles station has one of the longest histories of any lifeboat station in Wales. A lifeboat was first placed at Mumbles in 1835, provided by the Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, with management later taken over by the RNLI in 1863. The station now operates from Mumbles Pier and covers the waters of Swansea Bay and the Gower Peninsula year-round.
The charity relies entirely on donations. Every pound raised through events like the raft race goes directly towards funding crew training, equipment, and callout costs at stations across the UK and Ireland.
The race is organised by the Mumbles Lifeboat Crew Association (MLCA), a volunteer-led fundraising body that supports the station, with backing from Mumbles Community Council and local volunteers.
Teams and individuals wanting to enter can email [email protected] or call 01792 361268. No specialist experience is required — previous entries have ranged from corporate teams to community groups, all building their own rafts before race day.
The event is free to watch and open to all. Organisers say the revamped promenade makes this year’s race particularly accessible for families, those with pushchairs, and spectators with mobility needs.
Entries are open now. More information is available at [email protected] or by calling 01792 361268.

Ancient Gower skill revives ‘flying hedge’ near popular play area
Swansea Council and Mumbles Community Council have teamed up to create a traditional Gower-style “flying hedge” between Mumbles Road and the playground opposite West Cross shops.
This isn’t just any hedge; it’s one of 17 variations found across Wales, showcasing a countryside skill that is slowly disappearing.
Cllr Andrew Stevens, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, who is also a Gower farmer, highlighted the multiple benefits of the project.
“Hedge laying sustains healthy dense hedges, which provide corridors for wildlife to move about, homes for birds to roost and nest and nuts and berries growing in the hedge also feed the wildlife,” Cllr Stevens said.
Cllr Andrew Stevens (third from left) with members of the team involved in the hedge-laying project. (Image: Swansea Council)“Hedges are also great at soaking up air pollution and noise pollution especially when they run along a busy road.”
The project aims to bring back these vital green corridors, offering a natural haven for birds and other creatures, while also acting as a natural barrier against pollution from the busy Mumbles Road.
The initiative is supported by the Welsh Government through the Local Places for Nature 2025-27 grant funding, administered by WCVA and managed by Swansea Council.

MOTORISTS WARNED: Three months of lane closures on Mumbles Road for gas pipe upgrade
Motorists are being warned to expect delays as a major gas pipe upgrade is set to begin on Mumbles Road next week, bringing with it three months of phased lane closures.
Wales & West Utilities will start work on 4 March to replace over 1,000 metres of gas pipes in the area, a project described as “vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses.”
The work, which is scheduled to finish in June, has been planned in conjunction with Swansea Council to minimise disruption. While access will be maintained at all times and traffic will still be able to travel in all directions, lane closures will be in place and motorists are advised to allow extra travel time.
Crucially, the project has been planned to avoid working on Mumbles Road itself during the busy Easter school holidays.
The work will be carried out in three phases:
•Phase 1: Mumbles Road at the junction with Sketty Lane (4 – 27 March)
•Phase 2: Mill Lane (30 March – 10 April)
•Phase 3: Mumbles Road at the junction of Mill Lane (13 April – 15 June)
Wales & West Utilities’ Adam Smith, who is managing the work, said the project was essential for the community.
“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future,” he said.
“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner, or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.”
He added that the work would also ensure the network is ready to transport green gases in the future.

Banking hub recommended for Mumbles as high street services continue to disappear
Mumbles has become the latest community in Swansea to be recommended a banking hub, after LINK — the UK’s cash access network — said the village qualifies for a dedicated shared branch. It follows an application from local councillor Will Thomas, who warned that years of bank closures have left residents struggling to access basic services.
If delivered, the hub would be the third in Swansea, joining Morriston’s already‑open site and Gorseinon’s hub, which is due to open later this year.
What the hub will offer
Banking hubs operate like a traditional branch but are shared by all major banks. Customers can withdraw and deposit cash, pay bills and speak to staff from their own bank on rotating days.
The project will now be taken forward by Cash Access UK, which will begin speaking to local businesses and searching for a suitable site in the coming weeks. There are currently 214 hubs open across the UK, including 12 in Wales.
Dr Chris Ashton, Chief Commercial Officer at LINK, said the decision followed evidence of strong local need.
“We’re delighted to recommend a new banking hub in Mumbles. Special thanks go to Councillor Thomas for helping to ensure we had a full picture of the town’s cash access needs.”
“Part of the fabric of a thriving high street”
Cllr Will Thomas, said the hub would restore a vital service that many residents still rely on.
“I’m absolutely delighted my application was successful, so Mumbles will once again have a dedicated community banking facility. Many residents still rely on face‑to‑face services, whether that’s for depositing cash, managing accounts, or simply having the reassurance of speaking to someone in person.”
He said the loss of high street banks had hit the village hard.
“Banking isn’t just about transactions. It’s part of the fabric of a thriving high street. When people come into the village to use banking services, they visit our cafés, shops and local businesses. It supports footfall, strengthens our local economy, and helps keep Mumbles vibrant.”
“A real difference for residents and small businesses”
Tonia Antoniazzi, MP for Gower, also welcomed the recommendation.
“This will make a real difference for residents — particularly those who need extra support when banking — as well as the many small businesses central to the area that rely on cash for their day‑to‑day operations. It’s an important step in keeping our community connected and thriving.”
LINK says anyone can check their nearest free cash access point using its online Cash Locator tool.

Night‑time road closures as new safety upgrades head to Mumbles seafront
Swansea Council confirmed that work will start on January 25 to install two new pedestrian crossings and widen pavements at the junction of Newton Road and Mumbles Road. The authority says the scheme is intended to link the recently upgraded promenade with the village’s main shopping street ahead of the Easter tourism season.
Five nights of closures before weeks of temporary lights
According to the council, a short stretch of Mumbles Road will close overnight for five nights from Sunday to Thursday, between the White Rose pub and the taxi office. Diversions will run via Newton Road from 8pm to 6am.
The council says almost all construction will take place at night to keep traffic moving during the day and maintain access to businesses.
From February 1, Swansea Council says three‑way temporary traffic lights will operate 24/7 for around six weeks. The authority says the lights will be removed on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays where possible, returning each Sunday evening.
Crossings, wider pavements and a safer bus stop
The council says the upgrade includes two new pedestrian crossings near the mini‑roundabout, wider pavements around the junction and improvements to the Swansea‑bound bus stop, which will get a new shelter and more space for waiting passengers.
Cllr Andrew Stevens, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said the work would complete the link between the new prom and the village centre.
“The seawall upgrade and prom improvements have made a huge difference to the area for residents and visitors,” he said. “Mumbles remains open for business during the new work. Most work will be done by night to minimise impact on traffic and businesses.”
Cllr Stevens said the new crossings would give people “safe and easy” access between the shops and the seafront.
“Newton Road is a busy pedestrian area and we want to ensure those walking between the prom and the shops can do so as safely as possible,” he said.
He added that the bus stop upgrade was needed because queues often formed on a narrow pavement.
Delays expected but work timed for pre‑Easter finish
Swansea Council says temporary traffic lights are unavoidable and will cause delays, but the aim is to complete the scheme before Easter.
“We will be doing everything we can to keep the disruption to a minimum and complete the upgrade as soon as possible,” Cllr Stevens said. “We want to thank businesses, residents and visitors alike for their patience while it goes ahead.”
The council says the bus stop will remain in use throughout the works but may be temporarily relocated along the same stretch of pavement as construction progresses.

Four men charged after ‘aggressive’ cold‑callers spark alarm in Mumbles and Gower villages
Officers moved in after multiple reports from concerned households who said the men’s behaviour left them feeling uneasy.
Raymond Turnbull, 34, and Liam Doherty, 32, both from Middlesbrough, along with 25‑year‑old Connor Peacock from Reading, have each been charged with acting as a pedlar without a pedlar’s certificate.
A fourth man, 31‑year‑old Ryan Steel from Stockton‑on‑Tees, faces the same charge and an additional count of possessing cannabis.
Detective Inspector Tom Richardson said the men’s behaviour had rightly raised concerns among residents.
“These four men aroused suspicion due to their behaviour and made local residents feel uncomfortable. We thank residents for their diligence and willingness to report this to police. Reporting to and engaging with the police is invaluable in helping us keep our communities safe.”
He urged people across Swansea to stay alert and report anything that doesn’t feel right.
“If you witness unknown individuals acting suspiciously in your area, please report it to us.”
The men are expected to appear in court in due course.

Swansea ranks #2 in UK’s best winter seaside list – only beaten by Brighton!
Swansea has been crowned the UK’s second best winter seaside destination, finishing just behind Brighton in a national survey of 45 coastal towns and cities.
The study, carried out by SuomiCasino, found Swansea’s mix of 69 coastal trails, many along the dramatic Gower Peninsula, plus 558 bars and restaurants and 46 landmarks, made it one of the country’s most appealing off‑season escapes.
Swansea’s strong showing means it outranked well‑known seaside names including Portsmouth, Penzance, Blackpool and Eastbourne — and secured the title of Wales’s top winter seaside destination.

The survey highlights Swansea’s combination of scenic walking routes, cultural sites and dining options as ideal for a winter getaway.
Visitors can explore Mumbles Pier, walk the dramatic paths around Three Cliffs Bay, or enjoy local seafood at cosy waterfront restaurants. With an average winter temperature of 6.0°C and 3.8 hours of sunshine per day, the city offers a relatively mild and bright coastal experience compared to many rivals.

Brighton took the top spot thanks to its extensive dining scene, with 949 bars and restaurants, alongside 52 landmarks and 35 beach walking trails. But Swansea’s higher number of trails and strong mix of attractions put it firmly in second place, just behind the south coast city.
Portsmouth came third, praised for its maritime heritage and extensive seafront, while Penzance and Blackpool rounded out the top five.
Northern beaches offer longer daylight
While Swansea ranked highly for overall winter appeal, the study also highlighted northern destinations such as Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, and St Andrews for their longer daylight hours — each averaging 4.4 hours of winter sunshine per day.
These locations were noted for their dramatic coastlines, historic architecture and extended walking opportunities, proving that winter seaside escapes aren’t limited to the south coast.

Council sets out plan to keep new-look Mumbles Prom clean and welcoming
Targeted cleaning after public concerns
The prom, which reopened in July following a multi‑million pound sea defence and improvement project, has been regularly maintained by cleansing teams. But after reports of stones spilling from planting areas and staining beneath new benches, the council has carried out additional targeted cleaning.
Cabinet member for community services Cyril Anderson said:
“It’s important we keep the area safe and attractive for everyone. Stones from the beautiful planting areas on the prom have spilled onto the walkway itself. There’s staining in areas such as underneath new benches; people are spilling drinks, food and other products. We’ve undertaken additional cleaning, specifically in those areas – and the results have been encouraging.”
Specialist equipment proves effective
Council cleansing teams recently focused on the new sea defence wall and seating areas, using mechanical brush machines with specialist attachments to tackle stubborn stains. The work was carried out despite high footfall from pedestrians and cyclists, and drew positive feedback from visitors who praised the improved appearance.
Scheduled work plan in development
Council leader Rob Stewart said the authority is now drawing up a scheduled work plan to ensure the prom remains clean and welcoming.
“Our team has completed jetting work and we’re now drawing up a scheduled work plan to keep the prom as clean as possible. We’ll continue to monitor the area and factor similar operations into our ongoing cleansing programme,” he said.
Prom project designed for the long term
The Mumbles Prom reopened this summer after a major project that strengthened sea defences to protect the community from storms and the effects of climate change for decades to come. The scheme also included improvements to the look and feel of the seafront, designed to make it more attractive for local people and visitors.

South Gloucestershire man jailed after booking Mumbles B&B to meet “underage girl”
49‑year‑old Rodolfa Galvao, from Yate in South Gloucestershire, had been communicating online with what he thought was a 14‑year‑old girl. In reality, the account was a decoy operated by a volunteer group.
Galvao arranged to meet in Swansea in July and was challenged by members of the group when he arrived at a city centre bowling alley carrying a rose and a bar of chocolate. Police were called and he was arrested before he could check in to the Mumbles accommodation he had booked for two nights.
A search of his phone revealed sexually explicit messages sent to the decoy account.
At Swansea Crown Court, Galvao pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child under 16 following grooming. He was sentenced to 14 months in prison, placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years, and made subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same period.
“He poses a danger to children”
Detective Constable Rebecca Brain of South Wales Police said:
“Rodolfa Galvao believed he was communicating with a child and still sent explicit sexual messages to them, even going to the lengths of arranging to meet them.
It is clear that he poses a danger to children, and it is fortunate that the ‘child’ at the other end of the conversation was not real. He is fully deserving of a spell in prison.”
The court heard Galvao had no previous convictions. Judge Paul Thomas KC said there was “only one reason” why the defendant had booked the Mumbles hotel room and that he showed “no real remorse, only self‑pity.”
Support for survivors
South Wales Police said they recognised how difficult it can be for survivors of sexual abuse to come forward, but urged victims to seek support.
“We hope cases like this one provide reassurance that victims will be listened to, treated with dignity and respect, and will be supported throughout the judicial process,” a spokesperson said.
