'Zo vanzelfsprekend als de westerse roman in de eerste pagina’s een plotlijntje uitwerpt, zo vanzelfsprekend werpt de Chinese roman een ‘thematisch’ lijntje uit: een beeld of situatie waarin het thema te herkennen valt.'
