Immortals (2011) – Review
In 2006, Zach Snyder’s adaptation of Frank Miller’s 300 seemed to be the last word in giving Greek history/myth a phantasmagoric, visual, glow-up that seemed just as invested with bronzed muscles and kick-ass frame rates than it was with story. However, five years later, there was a typically epic response to this dramatically thrown down gauntlet in the form of Immortals, a film that hoped to tackle the majesty and freakish nature of the Greek Gods in a way that had never quite been seen before.
But was there be a filmmaker who could possibly hope to match the visual verve of Snyder while filming this latest attempt to realise a modern sword & sandals epic? Well, yes actually, there was – responsible for the startling visual gymnastics of trippy serial killer movie, The Cell, and even trippier fantasy film, The Fall, Tarsem Singh looked to turn his unique style toward the Gods of Olympus, but even with a pre-Man Of Steel Henry Cavill in tow, would Immortals be successful in it’s bid to live forever?It is a time of Gods and Monsters and after the genocidal King Hyperion wages his own personal war on the denizens of Mount Olympus for the death of his wife and child, he has no interest in the destruction his acts cause in his wake. His aim is to find the Epirus Bow, a mythical weapon lost by the Gods when they managed to imprison the traitorous Titans beneath Mount Tartarus, and plans to use it to free the evil beings in order to gain revenge on Zeus and his kind.
Of course, when your marauding, savage, bestial army makes a genocidal omelette, you best believe they’re going to break some eggs and during their attack on his village, Theseus is horrified when his outcast mother is slain by the crazed king – however, “luckily” for Theseus, he has been being groomed to be an imposing warrior by Zeus masquerading as an old man and thus becomes the God’s main instrument in stopping Hyperion’s reign of terror. Matters are made noticably more serious when Hyperion manages to capture the virgin oracle, Phaedra, a woman whose visions of the future could successfully lead him to the resting place of the Epirus Bow.
With the Gods forbidden to directly interfere with the lives of humans (Zeus gets a pass because he was in disguise), it’s down to Theseus, and cynical thief Stavros, to rescue Phaedra, find the bow and avoid Hyperion’s misshapen minions in an attempt to justify Zeus’ faith in humans.
The stage is inevitably set for wars to be fought both by men and Gods and you can bet it’ll all look super stylish as fuck; but as Hyperion aims to set the Titans loose, Theseus stages a counterattack to wipe his tryany from the face of the earth once and for all. As the blood sprays and the spears fly in various frame rates to spectacular effect, will the worlds of men and Immortals ever be the same after this?While there’s lots to admire about Immortals, I don’t think it comes as much surprise to discover that most of it comes from Tarsem Singh’s remarkably distinctive eye. While some directors claim that every frame they shoot is a painting, Singh’s lush pallette could genuinely count as a genuine contender thanks to his use of slow motion, colour grading and composition. Everything carries a bronzed hue as if the film is trying to be a living, ancient brass sculpture that tells the story of the heroes and villains within, which means a certain amount of realism is willfully dispensed with in favour of those hyper-stylised visuals. But while some of it proves to be genuinely breathtaking, some other aesthetic choices either are noticably strange or will just have you chuckling to yourself when you should be experiencing waves of awe.
Still, for the most part, those eyeball searing visuals take the bulk if the strain. While Henry Cavill and his small band of good guys (which includes a virgin Freda Pinto and Stephen Dorff for some reason) are drenched in warm colours, the soldiers in Hyperion’s army are all clad in enough spikes, wires and ancient Greek gimp masks to make the Cenobites from Hellraiser feel self-conscious about being underdressed. One hulking henchman in particular has the mask of a bull’s head made entirely of barbed wire attached to his bonce and Hyperion himself – played by a mumbling Mickey Rourke casually spitting food everywhere – struts about the place in a helmet that looks like a lobster’s claw that boasts a diamanté faceplate. However, while the film also contains a fair amount of images that straddle the divide between grotesque and beautiful (the large bronze bull that’s used to roast people alive is a particular standout), matters start to get a little weird when the Gods decide to stick their oar in.Obviously, Singh is trying to give us something we’ve never seen before with the Greek pantheon that’s different from both the beard and toga look of classic movies and the glam rock armour of the 2010 Clash Of The Titans remake. But what we get is so weird, it’s tough to take entirely seriously – which proves to be a problem as Immortals strives to be a very serious film indeed. Yes, watching the likes of Luke Evans, Isabel Lucas and Kellen Lutz shred through Titan flesh as super speed is dangerously bad-ass, but the fact that they’re doing in with glittery armour and ridiculous headgear on unfortunately raises more titters than goosebumps. Maybe Posiedon is supposed to be intimidating because he wields a hefty trident, but when he rocks up to the party with a wire frame fish on his head, it’s just tough to take as seriously as the film’s tone demands.
However, while the battle rages between what’s silly and what’s not, the real war has already taken a sizable hit when you realise that for all those visual bells and whistles, Immortals is really just another bargin basement heroes journey with ambitiously super-freaky set design. Rourke’s villain isn’t particularly interesting or new once you peer past the various tics and that rumbling line delivery, and neither is Cavill’s vanilla hero, whose supposed inspiring speeches fall flatter than his nonexistent belly. This means that it’s solely down to Singh’s hallucinogenic eye to carry the film and it’s sorely missing a swaggering Gerard Butler or Snyder’s talent for ridiculous bombast to help draw focus from the pretty pictures.While scoring many points for simply being quite unlike any other sword and sandals film you’ve ever seen, none of the actors in it can avoid getting swallowed up by Tarsem’s impressive design ethic. It looks good and moves well, but ultimately Immortals commits the mortal sin of being a bit dull when it comes to actually having a personality.

Jetzt mal ehrlich: Dieser Film war ein Monster. Auch wenn es „nur“ drei Oscars dafür gab, hat dieses kleine Kammerspiel für mich 22/23 die Saison als größte Überraschung dominiert. Es war schlicht unglaublich, was Arronofsky und Fraser aus einem Theaterstück extrahiert und auf die Leinwand gebracht haben. (ARD, Wh.)
