When that movie was released in 2000, it only reminded me of other submarine movies like Das Boot, The Hunt For Red October and Crimson Tide. The movie directed by Jonathan Mostow and starring Matthew McConaughey made a lot of buzz when it opened at #1 in the American box office and that success influenced a lot of moviegoers here in the Philippines to watch it in local cinemas. #3 Japan Pushes Back Against Islam – There is a disturbing trend that has been happening in Japan that their local media and the international news organizations are not telling you…the Islamic foreigners there have been causing a series of disturbances such as occupying public spaces for Muslim prayers/gatherings, littering, rape, the construction of an illegal mosque and more. That said, there are lots of Japanese nationalists and concerned citizens who are fighting back and expressing demands and complaints to their government officials. It is clear that the Muslim foreigners there in Japan have this collective mindset of conquering Japan, violating the Japanese and gaining power under the guise of multiculturalism and political correctness. #5 When Hollywood Released Two Similar Movies In 1998 – Way back in 1998, moviegoers worldwide saw two movies from Hollywood that had similar concepts about the world getting hit by something from deep space. The movies were Deep Impact and Armageddon, and they were released in the same summer box office season in America. Deep Impact was more dramatic and tried hard to be believable while Armageddon was highly exaggerated and had Michael Bay’s flair all over it. The two films were released at a time when disaster movies had a resurgence and they used computer-generated images to make realize their respective visual concepts. #6 You, Me And The Movies React To Ghost In The Shell (1995) – There are many reasons why the 1995 anime feature film Ghost in the Shell is very significant. The adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s literary Ghost in the Shell was made with very high production values under the direction of Mamoru Oshii, the story had many futuristic concepts that became very relevant today, and it was very influential for many Hollywood filmmakers. That said, I liked how the anime feature film drew reactions from You, Me and the Movies, and their reaction video is a must-see!

#7 Casablanca Reaction Video Of EOM Reacts – There is nothing like watching a classic, black-and-white movie like Casablanca. Set in French Morocco, the story follows many characters dealing with the uncertainty of war and it is inside the nightclub and gambling den of American expatriate Rick Blaine where a lot of developments happened. The 1942 movie is memorable with its top-notch stars (Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman are phenomenal), the dramatic plot, the immersive settings and many iconic lines and moments. #8 Soba Getting Reinvented In Japan – Soba – a Japanese noodle made from buckwheat flour – is getting reinvented in Japan as the traditional shops there are struggling with the rising costs of ingredients as well as a growing shortage of successors to the operators. #10 Atari Jaguar CD Revisited – While I played a lot of games of Atari (both on Atari 2600 console and arcade games) in my life, I never owned an Atari Jaguar nor its CD-ROM add-on device. Indeed, there was a time in the 1990s when Atari got back in console gaming starting with the Jaguar console that operated with games in cartridge format. Back then, I was completely unaware about the controversy regarding past Lone Ranger actor Clayton Moore who was legally barred from appearing in public wearing the trademark black mask. #9 The Unification Church Exposed – When former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated in 2022, the killer Tetsuya Yamagami committed the act not because of politics but because of the perceived connections the politician had with the controversial Unification Church which he blames for financial ruining his family and his own life. Trois films maudits + Isabelle Huppert parle de Heaven’s Gate

Parmi ceux qu’on appelle parfois des films de chevet, parce qu’on y revient souvent (et de préférence en salle – revoir des films sur sa télé, c’est pas pareil) il y a une catégorie, ce sont les « films maudits », des grands films (pas seulement pour moi, bien sûr) devenus plus ou moins « cultes », et qui furent des échecs à leur sortie. Cette combinaison échec puis culte tient à plusieurs facteurs. Il y a l’effet d’opposition à la mode de l’époque où le film sort, et puis il y a aussi le regard du public, ou au moins d’une partie du public, qui évolue, qui devient capable de mieux comprendre, de ressentir certains films, de les lire.

Trop d’images merdiques nuisent à la qualité du regard, mais dans le même temps, il y a aussi une éducation du regard pour toute une partie des spectateurs, une cinéphilie qui avance, et je suis convaincu que beaucoup de gens lisent bien mieux les films, certains films, que ce ne fut le cas. L’ampleur et la beauté de quelques films maudits peut être devenue pour nous une évidence, alors que ce n’était le cas pour presque personne au moment de leur sortie. On ne doit pas ça au côté moutonnier du culte à ces films mais, j’en suis convaincu, aux progrès du regard des spectateurs, d’une partie d’entre eux en tout cas.

Dans mes films de chevet, il y a trois grands films maudits : Playtime de Jacques Tati, Ryan’s Dauhter de David Lean et Heaven’s Gate de Michael Cimino.

Playtime, c’est un peu à part. C’est un problème de grammaire filmique (il se passe plusieurs choses à la fois dans le même plan, et aucune n’est soulignée), avec son prolongement dans le scénario (le personnage de Hulot est dilué au milieu de plein d’autres histoires, sans compter les « faux Hulot » qui abondent) qui ont dérouté les spectateurs, qui rendaient le film illisible par beaucoup, alors qu’il est d’une richesse, d’un foisonnement incroyables. Trop moderne ! trop avancé ! trop exigeant pour les spectateurs. Je crois que les enfants avaient moins de mal à le lire que les adultes – je l’ai vu à huit ou neuf ans, et j’étais bien moins critique que ma mère, qui était très déçue.

Ryan’s Dauhter (1971) et Heaven’s Gate (1980) sont deux grands films « classiques », si l’on peut le dire comme ça. En tout cas deux films longs et amples, et avec « de belles images ». Ryan’s Dauhter c’est un hommage à l’expressionnisme dans le cinéma muet allemand, par ses effets souvent, avec aussi des séquences entières sans dialogue, et un travail sur l’image parfois quasi expérimental. Mais ces images magnifiques et travaillées par un orfèvre, tournées en 70 mm, ça tombe au moment de l’attrait pour un cinéma tourné avec des caméras légères, sans décors, allégé des pesanteurs, ce qui a donné des choses formidables d’ailleurs (pour moi : entre 1967 et 1974, ce sont des années bénies pour quelque chose de mystérieux, seulement dans ces années, qui renouvelle l’idée de ce que le cinéma peut dire des relations entre les gens). Je crois que c’est l’opposition à la mode du temps qui plombe le film, qui a engendré son échec.

Pour Heaven’s Gate, je ne vais rien vous dire de plus, et vous conseiller seulement de passer une demi-heure avec Isabelle Huppert qui parle du film, dans un sujet réalisé pour TCM. Je viens de revoir cette vidéo, qui j’avais déjà postée sur Twitter il y a plusieurs années. Tant d’intelligence, de finesse et de sensibilité pour parler du tournage et de sa participation, mais aussi du film, et du contexte dans lequel il fut si mal reçu, je trouve ça magnifique ! Isabelle Huppert n’est pas seulement une grande comédienne, c’est aussi, par son intelligence, sa culture et sa sensibilité, une femme admirable. Elle m’épate à un point, t’imagines pas. Offrez-vous cette demi-heure ! vous ne la regretterez pas.
