In einem verfallenen Schloss, umgeben von einem feuchten, spiegelglatten See, leben der krankhaft nervöse Roderick Usher und seine kränkliche Zwillingsschwester Madeline. Ihre Geschichte wird von dem namenlosen Erzähler, einem Freund aus Kindertagen, den Roderick herbeigerufen hat, erzählt und nur vage verstanden. Als Madeline bald darauf stirbt – oder zu sterben scheint –, begraben sie ihren Leichnam.
