@mostlymartha an instance is a server. Someone explained it as being like email-there’s gmail and yahoo and hotmail, and they all communicate with each other.
The way this place works is, you do an introductory toot and put hashtags on everything. Then everyone retoots it. And everyone who sees it follows you and retoots it. There is no algorithm here, so no one will see anything unless it’s retooted or they search on a hashtag.

The convention here is to do an introduction toot and talk about yourself, and then everyone retoots it. (“Retoot”, ha ha!) Also, it doesn’t hurt to mention that you’re a #mefite. Oh, and use hashtags a lot. There’s no algorithm; people only see it if they follow you, or search a hashtag, or you get retooted. So retoot things a lot.

@welltemperedwriter @haineux It's been rough finding people. I found many people from Metafilter through the #mefite tag. Searching on tags works pretty well. Perhaps a #tdotbee tag or something similar would be effective should we care to make a push.

Hi all. I'm one of the wave of folks who have arrived from #metafilter today (I'm Numenius there). I'm a geographer and informatics specialist in my day job. I enjoy doing visual art such as #drawing, #sketching (including #urbansketching) , and #photography, especially of landscapes, both urban and natural.
