    🇮🇸 Icelandic: Rigning
    🇬🇧 English: Raining
    🏷️ Noun (feminine)

    E X A M P L E S E N T E N C E
🇮🇸 Icelandic: Í dag er mikil rigning úti.
🇬🇧 English: Today there is heavy rain outside.

📝 The word 'rigning' is a feminine noun in Icelandic. It can be used in both definite and indefinite forms. In the indefinite form, it is 'rigning' (rain), and in the definite form, it is 'rigningin' (the rain). The definite form is often used when referring to a specific instance of rain, while the indefinite form is used for general reference or when the specific instance is not known or important.

    🇮🇸 Icelandic: Hjóla
    🇬🇧 English: Bike
    🏷️ Verb

    E X A M P L E S E N T E N C E
🇮🇸 Icelandic: Ég hjóla oft til vinnu á sumrin.
🇬🇧 English: I often bike to work in the summer.

    G R A M M A R
📝 Að hjóla is an infinitive verb in Icelandic. When conjugated, it follows regular weak verb patterns. For example, in the present tense: ég hjóla (I bike), þú hjólar (you bike), hann/hún/það hjólar (he/she/it bikes). In the past tense: ég hjólaði (I biked), þú hjólaðir (you biked), hann/hún/það hjólaði (he/she/it biked).

The verb itself does not change based on gender or definiteness. Instead, it agrees only with person (first, second, third) and number (singular or plural). This is why hann hjólar and hún hjólar use the same verb form — both are third person singular, even though the pronouns differ in gender.

    🇮🇸 Icelandic: Köttur
    🇬🇧 English: Cat
    🏷️ Noun (masculine)

    E X A M P L E S E N T E N C E
🇮🇸 Icelandic: Kötturinn er að drekka mjólkina.
🇬🇧 English: The cat is drinking the milk.

    G R A M M A R
📝 In Icelandic, nouns have definite and indefinite forms. 'Köttur' is the indefinite nominative singular form meaning 'a cat'. The definite form is 'kötturinn' (the cat), where '-inn' is the definite article suffix. The indefinite form is used when referring to a cat in general or the first time mentioning a specific cat, while the definite form is used when the cat has been previously specified or is known to both the speaker and listener.

  8. Hype for the Future 86K: Counties of Icelandic Minnesotans

Introduction Though Icelandic Minnesotans are extremely rare in the modern State of Minnesota, the vast majority of such Icelandic settlers were largely associated with three (3) counties in the State: Lyon, Lincoln, and Yellow Medicine. Each of these counties is south of the Minnesota River, or perhaps more accurately, southwest, broadly along the western line of the State with South Dakota. Identifying Icelandic Minnesotans Numerous early Minnesotan church records would have recorded […]

  9. Hype for the Future 86J: Icelandic Minnesotans

Overview While Icelandic Minnesotans do not represent a significant share of the Scandinavian or otherwise Nordic population of the modern State of Minnesota, the insular North Atlantic community is highly representative of the cultural divide that has indirectly influenced the culture in the modern Upper Midwest of the United States. Though Minnesota is largely associated with the eastern neighbors of Iceland, particularly Norway and Denmark, Iceland is also of cultural significance in the […]

Overview The community and associated rural municipality of Gimli, Manitoba 🇨🇦 is associated with the largest Icelandic 🇮🇸 diaspora globally, representing the vast majority of the Icelandic community outside Iceland, though select additional settlers would also move on into other provinces in not just Canada, but also south into the states of the United States of America, most prominently North Dakota.

  11. Hype for the Future 85A: Lexical Engineering in Iceland 🇮🇸

Introduction The Icelandic language contains numerous terms for gender identity and expression in numerous distinct types of terms, though these terms are rarely associated with the official language proper. Rather than being associated with the language proper, the Icelandic government actually engineers new terms in an effort to preserve the Old Norse roots of the language. Gender Identity and Expression Iceland has utilized lexical engineering in the Icelandic language to protect the […]

  12. Hype for the Future 83E: Is Iceland Immune to Heteronormativity?

Introduction Though Iceland has traditionally focused on collective survival over private coupledom, the national identity had largely been gendered, as with the vast majority of national identities elsewhere. In the case of the island nation, however, many of the gender markers have largely been reference markers rather than role enforcers, as in the following demonstrations: Icelandic Names In Iceland, traditional family names are largely encouraged, and the national registry maintains a […]

  16. Hype for the Future 83B: The Icelandic Language

Introduction The Icelandic language is an enigmatic language associated with the isolated island nation. Surrounded entirely by the North Atlantic Ocean, the nation is at the convergence of the tectonic plates associated with Europe and North America. Despite the geographical distances between the island nation and the mainland (including Denmark and Norway), the Icelandic language continues to represent the insular Nordic region. 17. @assignedmale.bsky.social

Yes, but when #EricTheRed was telling the #Norwegians and the #Icelandic people about #Greenland, he was in some ways partially right. The climate was warmer then and larger areas of land beside the sea where arable and suitable for livestock and some agriculture.

#Britain was warmer too with some wine produced in #Devon and #Cornwall, (as it still is to a very very limited extent)

Consequently, the climate got colder again, people started to starve and they were finally wiped out by the #Inuit. They did finally return though, but I’m not sure of the dates.

C’mon, feel free to comment and correct some of my claims. That way we all get to know more, including me. 😊

  19. If you're looking for a great 3-player card game, I highly recommend Manni. Whist is probably the closest I've played before, but Manni has more depth and jeopardy in my opinion.

You can play it online at @cardgames_io or via their free app.

The page says it hails from Iceland, but I would love to learn more about the game and its origins.

  20. @SimonRoyHughes There are languages that are losing speakers, and are on track to no longer be spoken, like Sámi and Kven.

#Icelandic is not one of those languages, and it wasn't under Danish rule. 93% of the population of Iceland are native, daily speakers.

Jakobsdóttir's anecdote that "kids in Iceland are even conversing in English sometimes between themselves" is not a serious challenge to this established pattern.
