Our very young medlar had a very succesful year, now waiting till they soften.
Who has tasted these? I love their cinnamon-applesauce-apricot like flesh

It's this time of year again for those who have one of these trees near them! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hkqbIuTj3g

This is not a great advertisement for a fruit variety, LOL. #gardening #fruit #medlar

I'm intrigued.
Useful website said go for the "Dutch" variety.
Going to check with my local nursery.
Also this...

Stern's Medlar (Mespilus canescens) native to the US, but...
"The known range of Mespilus canescens is within the 22-acre Konecny Grove Natural Area."
...and nowhere else! Wow!!

Cool. It is possible to narrow it down. Too many refs, so I'm including the whole query...

#Mespilus germanica, #medlar awaiting bletting https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bletting
Once they have bletted (have blet?) the inside is mushy like apple sauce, and you can squeeze it out and eat it out of hand or use it for various kinds of preserve.#garden #gardening #flowers #horticulture #photography #bloomscrolling #botany

All set for this year's medlar harvest, including the weather❄️🌨

I picked up some medlar at the Bellingham Farmers Market, but they need to go through the bletting process (aka, go rotten) for a few weeks before the fruit's interior is ready to eat and/or use in jams or fruit butter.
Medlar, aka "open-arse fruit," were popular for centuries and featured in Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" and Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," but they fell out of fashion and mostly forgotten about by the 1950s.

Oh, my. What a faff I have let myself in for--a projected 83 weeks before I even see if the germination schedule worked. The things I do for #foodhistory, but necessary since medlar saplings seem to be unobtanium in Canada. #medlar #Rosacea #Mespilusgermanica

Miss Avaline began,
"What you see before you are some of the most #Unusual fruits on earth.
Let me introduce you.Few know the #Medlar. It's squishy & tastes like apple butter.
#Quince has an apple fragrance, too. This #Aronia or #Chokeberry reminds me of raspberries - the juice stains.
And this crazy-looking guy is #Durian. I'll slice it open & see if you notice a SHIFT in the #Aroma - from sweet to stringent & back again. It's a very pungent scent-shifter."

Went to check on the medlars growing across the street. They’re not ready yet.

Luckily I got my hands on quite a few medlars. I have absolutly no experiences with this long forgotten fruit. Any recipe suggestions? ☺️
