Camera in Upper Valley captures apparent sight of #FeralHog
Wildlife officials say they want to track down animal, test it for diseases
Oct 6, 2022 by Hannah Cotter
PLAINFIELD, N.H. — "A resident of New Hampshire's Upper Valley captured video of what appears to be a feral hog in her Plainfield backyard, and wildlife officials are now trying to track it down."Experts said feral hogs aren't found in New Hampshire or the surrounding area, so this one might have escaped from someone who relocated it to the state.
"Wildlife experts said #FeralHogs are considered to be escaped private property (!!!) , so without knowing who owns it, it's not legal to shoot it. (!!!)
"David Allaben, of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, said they can be a nuisance for landowners.
" 'They eat native #wildlife, young fawns, anything they can get a hold of. Turkey nests, #BirdNests, nesting birds on the ground, #turtles, you name it," Allaben said. 'They're opportunistic feeders -- they eat anything.'
"David Allaben said anyone who sees the hog should contact his office so it can be tracked down and tested for disease.
" ;Once we remove them, we take several samples — blood samples, tissue samples,' Allaben said. "We're testing for a whole variety of different diseases, because our fear is if they get in with domestic swine, these backyard pigs and stuff, they can spread whatever disease to that particular animal, and then we have a problem. And that's one reason we want to get them off the landscape as quickly as possible."
"The USDA is working to get permission to track the hog and remove it from the property.
"The homeowner that captured the video said the animal did not damage any of her property, but she's keeping her cameras on just in case it comes back."

Tom’s Hardware: Ukraine’s birds adapt to battlefield environment, weaving nests out of drone fiber-optic cables — resourceful wildlife adapts to miles of littered drone fibers. “Example photos of these optical fiber nests were shared on Twitter/X by a Ukrainian civil society leader and anti-corruption advocate, Olena Tregub. She called the carefully woven avian construction an ‘apocalyptic […]

#NestingSeagull in supermarket car park saved from sun by smart-thinking staff
by Nicholas Bourne, May 31, 2026
"A seagull nesting in a roadside hole next to a Morrisons supermarket was given extra protection from this week's heat when staff coned the area off and put a sun shade over it.
"Shopper Heather Ward, 49, from Caerphilly thanked 'lovely' staff at #Cardiff's Llanishen store after traffic cones were placed around the nest with a sheet tied over them to protect the bird from the sun.
"Ward said she remembered spotting a seagull at the same spot last year and this bird did not seem fazed, despite cars passing by on the road on one side and vehicles parked 'inches away' on the other.
"Customers also left the bird food and it is thought it left its nest late on Friday or very early on Saturday morning.
" 'They'd put cones around the bird and tied a sun sheet over the top to protect it from the heat, and given it some water and food,' said Ward."

#Catbird update. Catty-Kay is back in the nest, so hopefully, she will lay some eggs soon. Lots for them to eat after the rain, though they seem to enjoy the grape jelly I left out for the #Orioles. 🍇 🐦

Well, I discovered where the #Catbirds are nesting -- in the Rhododendron bush in front of the house (I accidentally disturbed the nest and got scolded). When I was inside the house, I peeked at the nest from behind a curtain. No eggs or nestlings yet. But I'll keep my eyes and ears out for baby catbirds, since Catty-Kay and Cat-King-Cole have paired up!

If you ever get one of these car shelters, get one like this. At this moment, there are three active bird nest under this thing, and there has been a nest that has already fledged out.
All of the birds appear to be House finches. (Not sparrows.)The number of Bird-nests around my folks old house is crazy. 3 finch nests, 1 phoebe nest, 1 wren, 1 chimney swift, and 1 black vulture nest within 100 feet. All active. Some are second time this year

I'm going to have to retract those nest ID sites I sent... all too general or not useful.
There does exist (I think) a birding book with species specific info on nests.
I collected these four nests from around my house one autumn. You can see how much variation there is...

Cool. It is possible to narrow it down. Too many refs, so I'm including the whole query...

I walked through a cloud forest today and this hummingbird nest was pointed out to me. Two days ago, it had babies in it, which means that somewhere there is a happy snake with a full belly. #BirdNest #BirdNests #CloudForest #RainForest #hummingbird #CircleOfLife

Since "Tea Cosy" Mother Quail was such a success with visitors to this page, I thought you might like to see a small video of a quail who gained a bit of fame by nesting under a lawnmower a couple of years ago in Arizona. In it, you will see her and her four peeping chicks. 🤎 🤍 🖤
The video was originally published by the Arizona Game & Fish Department, and the lawnmower belonged to Jason and Kimberly Garde. When the couple discovered the nest, they decided that the bird had the right of way; that there was no question the lawnmower would stay put and unused so the quail could safely hatch out her eggs and the chicks could fledge.
