But I think the misuse is killing people. And will likely kill many more come the next severe pandemic.

When I first read Agatha Christie's A Pocket Full Of Rye, I thought "General Paralysis of the Insane" was the lamest ever made-up disease name I'd ever heard.

But I misjudged Dame Agatha! Turns out it's really a thing, although now it is more usually called general paresis, paralytic dementia, or syphilitic paresis.

All of which seem a bit odd to me, since the paresis (muscle weakness) and paralysis don't appear until near the end of the disease's progression.

It might be more accurate to call it syphilitic dementia, although this would certainly be more awkward to suggest to family members (the context in the book).
