@LizardSF , "unlisted" in Mastodon means opted out of discovery -- which in turn means that everyone can see your post, but it won't appear on timelines, local or federated. However, anyone who follows your profile will see it.

As a courtesy measure, so that I don't babble in everyone's timeline by default, I choose to set my default tooting mode to "unlisted", and change that on the fly to Public (visible for all) only when I happen to be tooting using hashtags (as otherwise they aren't findable, hence their purpose is defeated).

✨ Mastodon difference between boost, favorite, bookmark

▶️ Boost: Similar to the sharing and retweet in twitter. You can boost the post and your followers also get notified

▶️ Favorite: The author gets notification that you marked favorite. Your followers will NOT be notified unlike twitter or other social media

▶️ Bookmark: To save a post for later viewing.This is similar to "saving" a post on other social media platforms. NO notification made to anyone.

To get followers and keep Mastodon as an interesting place:

▶️ Profile description and avatar: put a description (not required to be attractive) about field you interested in. Accounts with non profile pictures give a negative mindset. People might think you are not serious or a bot

▶️ Ubuntu -"i am what i am because of who we all are"

If you want followers, you should be willing to follow others also. Follow people who have the same field or interest as you. Don't be egoistic. In the end, we are here to share knowledge

▶️ Post majority content related to your domain of interest

▶️ Finally above all, a good content is important. Share knowledge that will be useful for others.

▶️ Use common hashtags

▶️ Interact with other uses in comment section. Don't be just a bot 😜

Using markdown text(or HTML) in your Mastodon posts:

Note: This will work only if your Mastodon server is based on Mastodon glitch-soc fork. If it didn't work, please comment which server so that others need to waste time looking for it.

▶️ You can go to account settings and look for "show content-type choice when authoring tools"

▶️ Select the option

▶️Now go to the editor and select file symbol next to the globe. Now you can choose the content type. For example, Markdown

Mastodon Tips:

▶️ You can mark spoiler(any other warning label) by clicking "CW" icon in your editor

▶️ Other Mastodon users will see the label. If they want, they can click show more to see the full content

For example, i encourage my #RustChallenge solvers to use spoiler in their answers.

5. Only hashtags can be searched AFAIK, so use them. e.g. I post tips as #MastodonTutorial

Dear #MastodonExperts, Search does not scan a user’s Bio for keywords or hashtags, correct?

(I think I already know the answer is ‘Yes’ based on my own testing, but I would be nice to hear from the experts. Thanks!)

#mastodontutorial question: does anyone know how DM's work (or if they work)? I tried one, but they look like a regular Toot and they appear in my timeline, so not sure if I'm doing it right: are DM's public meaning they are just a direct message, but everyone can see them? Are they different from Mentions?
