Creek crossings are a thing in our community because we are on a coastal strip between an escarpment and the ocean. Every path (from roads to social paths) negotiates with the multiple water channels that run down to the sea.
Informal creek crossings don’t have to be fancy. Mostly they’re like this: a little something that helps everyone walk the beach without getting wet shoes. They pop up everywhere.
It’s social gifting: small hope-ful action.

Over the past 20 years, many little informal bridges have been built, and when they give way someone replaces them. This lets kids on bikes and others who can’t jump use the path. The latest is magnificent, we’re all in awe. Someone came down with power tools after the big floods and did this. We’re all benefiting.
This is the #JoyOfAltText to me: if you have the resources and make a bridge (simple or complex, depending on what you’ve got to give) everyone gets to use the path.

If your image is a screenshot, you can often grab the text from it—your photo app is eager to do this for you.
And if someone comes across your image without a description they can write a description and add #ALT4you.

I agree that #AltText can sometimes be a chore, especially when describing an image shared a million times by others, but also, it can be a beautiful way to express yourself and even fun. Would be cool to see AI provide the boring side of alt text. Maybe it can earn its keep that way. #JoyOfAltText

The photographs of @HonDuMuc come with a painterly layer of description that brings out secretive detail. Filmmaker @dilmandila describes flowers exactly as you’d expect a filmmaker to do. @paralithode uses the language of careful poetic observation and I learn every time.
I seek out #AltText like someone opening a window in an advent calendar, and every time I’m so grateful to all the screenreader users here like @bright_helpings who keep pointing the way to this intimate space of wonder that makes things better for everyone.

In the 30 years that we have lived here, we've cared for 16 abandoned cats. We offered them a deal: they keep the copious rodents under control in the greenhouses, protecting our business' nursery stock. In return we offer room, board, and full healthcare in an idyllic cat playground free of predators.

I traverse the trail between my home in the yurt and the decrepit old original farmhouse many times per day. Years ago, I 3D printed tiny LED light fixtures to illuminate the trail so I wouldn't always have to carry a flashlight. Too many times in my 30 years here, I've inadvertently collided with black cats that do not understand that I cannot see in the dark.

Back in 2019, when rambling through the woods looking for interesting lichens, moss, or fungus to photograph, Frank the tuxedo cat would often accompany me. I found this scene of tiny mushrooms rising from a dense moss carpet. Frank photobombed my careful camera placement.

I grew up with this painterly way of thinking: look deeply and carefully and then try to communicate what you see to someone else. So while I will alt text plainly “Tabby cat looking at camera, yawns”, when I’m describing a flower I feel my writing self pick up a paintbrush. I notice other gardeners do the same. @plants

I stood in the orchard last night watching the moon rise.

I've been laying fallen branches on this table for years. The most vibrant of the #lichen and #moss have been here the longest. The battered ones are recent rescues from the orchard.
The second big wave of rain for the season has just begun. All of these interesting creatures thrive in our drenching Oregon rains on a 7℃/3℃ day/night winter cycle.
The atomic age stoneware is just visiting.
