CW: Rant about some bullshit on the Fedi
Okay so as someone who has MULTIPLE blind friends
One of the things that pisses me off so much about Fedi is how fucking PERFORMATIVE it is about accessibility
Example: they will scream into the void about how you should always add image descriptions. Which is well-intentioned. They even have bots that literally publicly shame you if you don't.
But not everyone can necessarily make an image description. That doesn't mean we shouldn't just say "don't post images." That's fucked up. I used to have issues posting descriptions when I had more brain fog problems. Sometimes I still do.
And Fedi is not consistently helpful with the alt4me hashtags. Like good fucking luck getting people to help you.
And all this on top of the fact Mastodon nor anything else supports adding captions to video, which is perhaps one of the most important accessibility features for videos.
Yet they will also say "don't use AI for image descriptions." Most of my blind friends say they'd rather have an image description done by AI than none at all. And it ain't like people are stepping up to help; I know, I've tried.
It isn't like I'm absolutely in love with AI, but I absolutely will champion accessibility every time because people I care about need it.
So my rant is: people care about accessibility up until the moment they actually have to do something, then they suddenly resort to just shaming people and yelling at them. And that's horseshit. I'd rather you just stop pretending you give a fuck.
Here's my position:
- Add an image description if you can
- Stop fucking shaming people for not being able to
- Shut those fucking image description reminder bots down, that's how you literally get people to turn against you; no one wants to be nagged by a fucking bot
- Start helping in the #alt4me hashtag if you can
- As much as I hate AI, I acknowledge that it is useful for my blind friends in this limited instance. Do not shame people for using generated descriptions. "Blah blah the planet blah blah Capitalism" The planet is already well and truly fucked.
I cannot emphasise #4 enough, if you do not want people to use AI, don't give them a need to use it.
(And don't police blind people or tell them what tools they can or can't fucking use)

BTW the #alt4me is because I am myself disabled. It is too much work for me. I have disabled hands and chronic migraine. I have visual hypersensitivity heightened by years of cluster headaches.
The thing about Special Relativity is if you look closely at it you see that in fact there is still an ether, it is just the ether wind moves differently in different ‘frames’. It merely HAPPENS that in the ‘frame’ of the apparatus the wind speed is zero!
So Special Relativity does NOT solve M-M!▪️

Vaihtoehtoisen tekstin kirjoittaminen kuvilleVaihtoehtoinen teksti tai alt-teksti (tekstivastine, engl. ”alternative text”) on teksti, joka kirjoitetaan vaihtoehdoksi kuvalle tai videolle. Tämä parantaa julkaisun saavutettavuutta eli kuka tahansa (vammasta huolimatta) ymmärtää, mitä kuvassa tai videolla on.
Keskityn tässä kirjoituksessa vain kuviin, mutta Mastodonissa alt-tekstin voi kirjoittaa myös videoille.
Alt-tekstin kirjoittaminen
Lisää kuva julkaisuusi, jonka jälkeen kuvan esikatselun ylänurkkaan ilmestyy ”Muokkaa” -painike. Sitä painamalla aukeaa toinen ikkuna, jossa voit kirjoittaa kuvallesi alt-tekstin.
Millainen on hyvä alt-teksti?
Tähän on olemassa monia hyviä ohjeita, eikä yhtä oikeaa tapaa. Tässä omat ohjenuorani:
- Kuvaile kuva niin kuin kertoisit siitä jollekulle puhelimessa.
- Sinun ei tarvitse kirjoittaa, että kyseessä on ”kuva”, vaan kerro, millainen kuva on kyseessä: valokuva, piirroskuva, kaavio vai jokin muu?
- Sisällytä alt-tekstiin kuvassa näkyvä olennainen teksti. Esimerkiksi jos lisäät kuvan kokonaisesta kirjan sivusta, mutta olennaista on jokin kohta, niin kirjoita se.
Viime kädessä kuvailusi on sinun. On ihanaa, että henkilön oma ääni kuuluu myös alt-tekstissä! Täydellisyyteen ei tarvitse pyrkiä, mutta alt-tekstin on tarkoitus olla hyödyllinen ja toimia vastineena kuvalle.
”Entä jos en pysty kirjoittamaan alt-tekstiä?”
On tilanteita, joissa alt-tekstin kirjoittaminen ei ole mahdollista. Silloin voit käyttää aihetunnistetta #Alt4Me tai suomeksi #AltMinulle.
Tämä tarkoittaa, että pyydät jotakuta toista kirjoittamaan alt-tekstin puolestasi julkaisusi alle.
Annettu alt-teksti kannattaa kopioida ja liittää oman kuvasi alt-tekstiksi muokkaamalla alkuperäistä julkaisuasi.
Miksi alt-teksti kannattaa kirjoittaa?
Jos alt-tekstiä ei ole, niin näkövammainen ruudunlukijakäyttäjä ei tiedä, mistä kuvassa on kyse ja koko julkaisun sisältö voi jäädä epäselväksi.
Mastodonissa alt-tekstin voi lukea kuka vain (riippuen siitä, mitä käyttöliittymää käyttää), koska kuvassa on yleensä ”Alt”-painike. Sitä painamallaa voi lukea kuvan alt-tekstin. Tällöin alt-teksti auttaa ketä vain ymmärtämään kuvan tarkoituksen.
Alt-teksti on myös hyödyllinen, jos jollakulla on hidas nettiyhteys, sillä kuva ei välttämättä lataudu, mutta alt-teksti latautuu.
Mastodonin haku etsii julkaisuja myös alt-tekstin avulla. Se on tekstiä aivan kuten muukin julkaisun teksti.
Jos kuvalla ei ole alt-tekstiä, niin moni jättää jakamatta sen muille. Tämä on osa Mastodonin kulttuuria.
Vaihtoehtoisen tekstin muistutus
Voit muuttaa asetuksia niin, että saat aina muistutuksen, jos olet julkaisemassa kuvaa ilman alt-tekstiä.
- Avaa ”Asetukset”.
- Paina ”Ulkoasu”.
- Siirry otsikkoon ”Edistyneet asetukset”.
- Valitse ”Varoita ennen kuin julkaisen mediaa ilman vaihtoehtoista tekstiä.”

Even with all this in mind, it's easy to feel as though hashtagging is still overwhelming because of everything you have to look up. However, if you consistently draw or post things with overlapping themes, the process for tagging new posts can become easier as you get a more assembly line approach to it. When I tag my art posts, my thought process is tagging for my Constants,. basic Variants, and Key, Traits.
Constants would be what is always consistent for my character I'm posting for and my organization. #BeebzArt #TristeMiedo #catboy #OC.
Variants are what I use for what I think would be the most commonly searched objective truth about the drawing #furry #fursona #anthro #kemono.
Traits are pretty much anything else that I think would be the appealing thing someone would look for that would be appreciated in my work for one reason or another.
