  1. A survey on readers' experiences reading wuxia (especially Jin Yong's works) in English: app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s

  3. De kungfu-romanserie "Legend of the Condor Heroes" van Jin Yong is al meerdere keren verfilmd en verseried, en er komt nu weer een nieuwe serie uit gebaseerd op deze romans.

  4. Fijne bespreking van "The Deer and the Cauldron" (vert John Minford), de laatste serie van de legendarische kungfu-schrijver Jin Yong. Dit laatste verhaal is heel anders dan zijn eerdere meer rechttoe-rechtane kungfu-verhalen: de hoofdpersoon is niet rechtschapen, maar een bedrieger die zich overal in en weer uit weet te werken.

  5. I read once that Chinese people learn their history not in school, but from #JinYong, and thought, "One billion people can't be wrong," so the next day I started reading LoCH. The project of working my way through Jin Yong's ouevre has been slowed by my needing to read everything *around* the history in the books, but this is just as I planned it.

  6. What a great article about reading Jin Yong - the New(-ish?) translations of The Condor Heroes.

  8. Hey, great news! A Past Unearthed, volume one of the English translation of #JinYong’s Return of the Condor Heroes, is now out! uk.bookshop.org/p/books/a-past #wuxia

Less great news: I really rate Gigi Chang’s translation, but the awful (and inconsistent) translation of characters’ names that Anna Holmwood started in Legend of the Condor Heroes is still with us. Argh.

  9. Outstanding news from @gigicchang on Twitter!

    "THE CONDOR HEROES ARE BACK!!

A Past Unearthed – 1st vol of Jin Yong's Return of the Condor Heroes and 2nd part of the trilogy – published by @maclehosepress, will be coming to your local bookshops on 12 Oct, in all handy formats, including audio, read by @DanielYorkLoh"

I'm not happy the translator's name isn't on the cover tho

  11. #wuxia thought of the day no.2, re: #JinYong’s Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils.

This was in response to someone sharing this post about plot tropes created/popularised by Jin Yong: flamingwell.tumblr.com/post/72

  12. An interesting post on characters with disabilities in #JinYong's Condor Trilogy: thenoteswhichdonotfit.wordpres

The same blogger has a series of posts on sexism and misogyny in Jin Yong's works, which is well worth reading: thenoteswhichdonotfit.wordpres

  13. An alternate translation of the first half-chapter of #LegendOfTheCondorHeroes, from 1997: wuxiawanderings.com/an-early-t

This was supposed to have been the official English translation, by John Minford and Sharon Lai, but for some reason the project never came to fruition. #wuxia #JinYong

  16. @PizzaMyHeart
Hi. I'm not sure when that original blog post was made, but book 3 of Jin Yong's Legends of the Condor Heroes was published earlier this year in England, with book 4 scheduled for early next year. Also, there's another website for translations of his novels, but I'm not sure if they're different translations or just a mirror copy of the Wuxia Society's.

  17. Well, well, well. It seems The Book Depository has A Heart Divided already listed. Let the waiting for Feb. 4th, 2021 begin!

  18. Finished reading A Snake Lies Waiting by Jin Yong (book 3 of Legends of the Condor Heroes)

    2/5 stars

TL;DR - contrivances, coincidences, & fluff; Charles Dickens lite...with kung fu fighting

  19. While this is not the officially approved English translation of Jin Yong's Legends of the Condor Heroes, it still seems pretty good. They've already finished book 4 AND the next 2 series (12 books in total). I may give this a read after I read A Heart Divided when it comes out next year.

Give it a quick look to see if it's something you're interested in. It's free & will give you an idea of what wuxia is like & a bit of Chinese culture & geography.

  21. GUO JING: She is the daughter of the Great Kahn of the Mongolians. And we are promised to one another.

LOTUS: You're promised to each other? Why didn't you tell me?

GUO JING: I wanted to tell you, but I didn't want to upset you. And sometimes, well, I even forgot about it myself.

LOTUS: She will be your wife one day. How could you forget such a thing?

  22. I'm now reading A Snake Lies Waiting by Jin Yong (book 3 in the Legends of the Condor Heroes series)

  23. The next Legends of the Condor Heroes novel by Jin Yong, A Snake Lies Waiting, comes out Feb 6, 2020. But why do book stores have cover, release date, & synopsis before the publisher's official website?

  25. My wife is cackling with wild laughter because she just spoiled the ending of #LegendsOfTheCondorHeroes for me, but the English translation won't be out until early 2021.

  26. The vile Cyclone Mei, one half of the treacherous duo Twice Foul Dark Wind, skilled in the Nine Yin Skeleton Claw, the Heartbreaker Palm, & the White Python Whip, which they learned when they stole the Nine Yin Manual from their master, Eastern Heretic Apothecary Huang on Peach Blossom Island.

This is why I like reading #JinYong: the setting, the world he created, & the way he named things.

  27. My 2018 #reading consisted mostly of nonfiction, & only 2 works of fiction (but 1 was #HistoricalFiction). The topics were mostly about life in the #MiddleAges, #Macau, & #bread. But I did read a #JinYong novel, a novel about the #Dutch in #Taiwan, & a book about #rum. As always I hope to read more next year.
