¿Sabían que la palabra Kung Fu originalmente no significa pelear ni tiene que ver de forma exclusiva con las artes marciales?
En el idioma chino mandarín, este término se escribe con los ideogramas 功夫 y se pronuncia de forma correcta como Gōngfu. La palabra se traduce en realidad como una habilidad que se consigue con el tiempo, mucha paciencia y trabajo duro. La expresión se compone de dos caracteres, donde Gōng (功) significa mérito o trabajo logrado a través de la práctica, y Fu (夫) se refiere al ser humano que realiza la tarea de forma madura. Por eso, en su cultura de origen, cualquier persona que domina un oficio de manera perfecta gracias a practicar por años tiene su propio Gōngfu.
Bajo esta idea, un cocinero que maneja el fuego y los cuchillos con una precisión exacta tiene el Gōngfu de la cocina, disciplina que tradicionalmente se llama Chúyì (厨艺). Lo mismo pasa con un carpintero que labra la madera sin cometer un solo error o un pintor que domina los pinceles tras una dedicación constante. Incluso existe una forma tradicional de preparar el té con utensilios especiales de arcilla, controlando la temperatura del agua y midiendo el tiempo exacto de infusión, que se conoce formalmente como Gongfu cha (功夫茶).
La idea de que esta palabra solo sirve para los golpes y los combates de cine es un cambio de significado que ocurrió cuando el concepto llegó a los países de este lado del mundo en el siglo XX. El nombre verdadero para las artes marciales en China es Wushu (武术), mientras que el Gōngfu se queda como el reconocimiento al esfuerzo diario y a la maestría que cualquier ciudadano puede alcanzar en su trabajo ordinario.

GF and I were talking to the teen yesterday about #besties, you know the #friends that would help you move _bodies_.
He was describing one of his besties and said "I'd split the block for him" and we were like "ok, we're pretty up on our lingo but WTF does that mean? is that a #martialarts #kungfu thing like you'd cut down a foe like chopping a cinderblock in half?"
And he's like "lol you guys are so fucking OLD, get your hearing checked. No it's a gangsta rap term `SPIN THE BLOCK` as in a drive-by shooting you `go round the block again instead of a clean getaway to make sure they real dead` and we were like "oooooooooh"
And then we were like "HEY!", then "go do the fcking dishes."

For the past four years I have been trying to come up with a way to train in the various martial arts I am familiar with (principally American #Kenpo and #Kyusho Jitsu). While shadow training works up to a point, there is no substitute for a physical training partner — for too many reasons to get into here.
My problem is that I moved away from my training cohorts 18 months ago to what seems to be a martial arts desert. I know of only two schools within reach one is in #Aikido, the other is a #KungFu school I’ve never heard of.
Given I’m 76 yo, even if a relatively fit one, what would either school do if I told them I was looking for a training partner? I know what i woud do if it was my school but then I’m not your average martial artist, and I’ve expereinced some instructors who would not take kindly to such requests.
I’m exploring some solutions, but none that would provide me with a uke.
I’m not expecting anyone to come up with a solution for me, I’m just journaling my pain.
