    Duration - 2:36

    [from the #news collective #BellyOfTheBeast]

At a time when the US governmentโ€™s economic war on #Cuba is intensifying, #US lawmakers Rep. Pramila Jayapal and Rep. Jonathan Jackson traveled to Havana in early April.

At the Martin Luther King Center, Jackson paid tribute to his father, #JesseJackson, recalling his historic 1984 visit to the island, when he met with Fidel Castro and helped usher in a rare moment of dialogue between Cuba and the #AfricanAmerican community.

Jackson spoke of a generation of people in the US shaped by the countryโ€™s continuous wars, and called for a different path forward โ€” one rooted in dialogue, mutual respect, and human connection.

โ€œItโ€™s my prayer that the historical and political differences that divide us would not be used to deny our children the kind of future they deserve,โ€ he said.

  3. #jesseJackson #heatherCoxRichardson The past that his legacy will honor is rooted in March 7, 1965, when marchers set out across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, headed for the state capital at Montgomery.

The trigger for their march was the shooting death of an unarmed 26-year-old, Jimmy Lee Jackson, but their journey had begun a full three years before, in 1963, when Black organizers in the Dallas County Voters League launched a drive to get Black voters in Selma registered. They had chosen Selma because while there were more Black people than white people among the 29,500 people who lived in Selma, the cityโ€™s voting rolls were 99% white.๐Ÿงต

  12. Jesse Jackson was the first (almost) mainstream American politician that tried to bring Palestinian human rights into that mainstream of American politics. He failed at that, but AOC, Tliab and Omar and Bernie could never have gotten where they are today without him paving the way. This only shows how rigid and Zionist American politics is and has been for a long time.
