Now suggestions for curious and interesting ‘Mathematics’. This means strange facts, anecdotes, paradoxes, portraits of eccentric mathematicians, mathematical philosophy, quotes and mathematics education.
“The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics.” – Paul R. Halmos
“Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about understanding.” – William Paul Thurston
“The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not ‘Eureka!’ but ‘That’s funny…’” — Isaac Asimov
“I used to think that maths teachers were all teaching the same subject, some doing it better than others. I now believe that there are *two effectively different subjects being taught under the same name, ‘mathematics’.*’
...‘relational understanding’ [means]… knowing both what to do and why. Instrumental understanding I would until recently not have regarded as understanding at all. It is what I have in the past described as ‘rules without reasons’, without realising that for many pupils *and their teachers* the possession of such a rule, and ability to use it, was what they meant by ‘understanding’.” Richard Skemp (https://atm.org.uk/write/MediaUploads/Journals/MT077/Relational_Understanding_and_Instrumental_Understanding_–_Richard_R._Skemp.pdf)

Ugh. Should have stopped working on these math games at version 10.
Some 26 versions later, and they are no longer working.
No errors or bugs showing in CLI, IDE, or the console.
Although it was working on my iPhone about 4 hours ago.

Dramatised scenes from my first client this morning.
They were so excited to tell me they had achieved their very first “A” in mathematics (or in any subject).
This after very nearly dropping out of school due to little #ActuallyAutistic support.
So happy - deserves it.

Spoke with company, they are going to sort a replacement and suggested keeping broken one and try to secure.
So far so good, just not strong enough to hold the butcher paper pad.
Friday night Flipchart factoring fun with #CaturdayEve company.

A student learnt today one question not to ask me is “Is it accurate?”
It depends.
Who measured it? How did they measure it? Why did they measure it? Should they have measured it? What is it being measured against and repeat previous questions.
Are we talking precision, accuracy, both? What units are you using? How many significant figures? How much error are we allowing?
The list goes on and on and on…

#mtbos #iTeachMath #iTeachMaths Friday a student wanted an organized presentation of FACTORING.
Hey, I happened to have a cardstock w/ table arrangement on one side, flowchart on back. Student opted for table.
I'm going to digitize it -- it was yellow cardstock, so the copy is grey and nasty, *and* I hope I can pretend to think visually (not my strength) and use some infographic options so the table's not as overwhelming, either.
I briefly went down the "no, make it *really* visual!* path, as in ... this is multiplication and division... area images?
Right now the need is for Good Notes, though. And my Monday mind saw my draft and ... I thnk it's prob'ly as awful as I think it is :P -

Ben Sparks (@SparksMaths) on youtube:
"Trying some short videos on basic tools in Geogebra using YouTube Shorts. Here's the enlarge command in less than 1 minute.
If you're teaching transformations I feel like there's no excuse not to show everyone something like this at least once."

(Side note: I always "CamelCase" because it helps screens readers identify word boundaries)
