Ian Stewart’s (2005) book Game, Set and Math includes 12 puzzles linked to the 12 days of Christmas. A favourite is Five Gold Rings. The five gold rings are arranged to maximise the overlaps. At every overlap there is a diamond. You have diamonds of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, ... carats. Arrange the diamonds so the total number of carats on each ring is the same.
Try starting small—just two rings, two overlaps and each ring has a total of three carats (1 + 2). Now three rings, there are six overlaps, arrange diamonds of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 carats so each ring has the same total.

Skemp was writing about England in the 1970s.However, even today, are all learners in all the world’s schools taught the reasons for all the rules, and use constructivist learning?
I’m not sure in fact that instrumental cf. relational understanding are direct analogies of rote cf. constructivist learning.

Would we not expect the world to be full of ‘dancophobes’?Would we say that those who made it to the dance floor and music had the greatest ‘aptitude for dance’? In my view, it is no more appropriate to draw conclusions about mathematical aptitude from children’s unwillingness to spend many hundreds of hours doing sums.” — Seymour Papert (p. 43)

I was fortunate to learn Logo and turtle programming on a modest home computer in my early teens. I don't know which was cause and which was effect, but I still like geometry and programming today.

Fermat conjectured that for \(n\) a non-negative integer, all numbers of the form \(2^{2^n}+1\) are prime.
Was there ever a worse conjecture in maths than that?

I'm going to see the Art of the Brick #exhibition today!
I'm a bit of a #Lego fan, but it always reminds me of one of the years we (at Bletchley Park) won "Best Venue for #Mathematics #Learning" at the School Travel Awards. To my knowledge we won it every year it existed, and it disappeared as a category after three goes. Each time we won I looked up the runners-up to see what the competition were doing (in the spirit of "steal, steal, steal; but steal from the best"), but each time I never really discovered anything that I'd consider genuinely mathematical (so no wonder the category disappeared).
One year, Legoland Windsor were a runner-up and, as far as I could tell their 'mathematics' offer was using bricks as a disappointingly abstract prompt to practise memorisation of times tables.
We can do better than this in the #heritage sector - some already do - but we need to make engaging with mathematics a _normal_, everyday thing that #museums, #galleries, #archives and #libraries do, and not just through their formal learning programmes.
The maths provision in the formal learning programme at Bletchley Park was excellent, but there's no way we should have been such a standout winner in that category every time it ran.
I'm always excited to hear about maths being explored by museums, whether it's part of school trips or (and this is the dream) in its exhibitions.
