  1. When In Bruges: Relais Bourgondisch Cruyce Hotel

Surely you've seen In Bruges?! Well we have, and we saw it again before the big birthday trip just for good measure. This is the very hotel featured in the movie. In person, Relais Bourgondisch Cruyce Hotel is much more sedate and refined. No guns. No child murderers. No rooms full of crazy parties with cocaine and hookers. Darn. We are actually on a scouting expedition for our return in July. Here's what we learned. Room 25 is the one we want. This time we were in 20, which is a […]

  6. @Starcade It's hard for me to come up with a list of movies that I "hate" or that are my "least favorites" because I usually pre-select them out so that I do not end up watching any such movies.

For me, the list would be :movies that I started to watch but couldn't finish" (which are movies that I usually turn off w/in the 1st 10-15 minutes).

Off the top of my head these are a few of them:

    1) #GrandBudapestHotel (2014)
    2) #InBruges (2008) not sure I could watch #Banshees but not this one.
    3) #Her (2013)
    4) #AfterYang (2021)
    5) #HomeAlone (1990)
    6) #OBrotherWhereArtThou (2000)
    7) #MenWhoStareAtGoats (2009)
    8) #TheTerminal (2004)
    9) #TicketToParadise (2022)
    10) #BillyMadison (1995)

It's no surprise that certain actors are featured in more than one of these but that doesn't mean I don't like other movies of theirs.

There is also a long list of movies that I like (or at least don't hate) that I've seen & rewatched in their entirely many times over. 🤷‍♂️

There's no accounting for "taste." 😉

  10. Art in Bruges

For various reasons I find myself thinking about this little clip from the 2016 film In Bruges, starring Brendan Gleason and Colin Farrell. It’s set in the Groeningemuseum in the city of Bruges.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtgQEt3Eb4Q

You can read an interesting post about the art in the film here.

You will see that the only painting that Ray (Colin Farrell) likes is a triptych called The Last Judgment, a version of which coincidentally featured in my post on Monday. The one I posted was by Hieronymous Bosch and is in Vienna; the one in Bruges is of doubtful attribution. It may be by Bosch, but experts think it is more likely to be by members of his workshop.

P.S. If you like black comedies then In Bruges is definitely for you! I wouldn’t say it was really a Christmas movie though…

  12. CW: strong language

Rewatched the movie In Bruges again last night. Fucking funny movie! Oh, the strong language warning above is for the movie, BTW. Its language has much strength.

In my estimation, this is a perfect movie. Brilliantly written and directed, acted by absolute artisans, clever twists, and it's set in Bruges. It's a fairytale town, isn't it? How's a fairytale town not somebody's fucking thing?

Oh and it's offensive on basically every possible level. Including at height.

NB: suicidal content. May be a trigger for some. Quite brutally.
