Henry Venn, an Anglican with the Church Missionary Society, makes an awkwardly precise point: good works don’t earn God’s favour on their own, yet Scripture repeatedly promises great reward when they flow from faith, love of God, and obedience. The tension, he suggests, lies less in the Bible than in our stubbornly worldly hearts. Some object to “worldliness,” others to reward itself—but the verses remain. The real question is how such a heart is ever overcome.

Tonight on Steadfast, we're looking at the counterpoint to the ever familiar Ephesians 2:8-9. What does it mean to be created to do good works? Are we right back to earning God's favor? Ephesians 2:10 helps us dig into that question. https://youtube.com/live/Ma4p6OBiECk

The pleasure we derive from doing favors is partly in the feeling it gives us that we are not altogether worthless. It is a pleasant surprise to ourselves.

If some of those Birds would spend their time following His example instead of trying to figure out His mode of arrival and departure, they would come nearer getting confidence in their Church.

Robert William Dale was a Congregational pastor. Writing on doing the will of God, he reflects on principles God will judge the world (Mt 25:31ff). Jesus won’t ask about your sympathy for the hungry and miserable. Jesus will tell the righteous that they gave him meat when hungered.
John Piper, in contrast, has an alternative view, that Jesus will ask about bible reading.
How can you respond to Jesus’s needs beyond mere sympathy?

Marcus Dods, Free Church of Scotland minister, quotes the abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison. Slavery violates the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Some need to be reminded that enslaved persons have the same feelings as ourselves.
How can you look afresh at your adversaries, people you might be hurting, as if they were a person of the same passions and feelings as yourself?

Robert MacCulloch, Scottish minister, on Isaiah 58:7, bringing the poor that are cast out into thy house. This frequent command is from God and urged by humanity, the love of God, the grace of God, and his promises. It is our joy.
How many Christians, even liberal ones, are ready to bring “the poor that are cast out into thy house”? Do conservatives seek to week out tenderness?
How can you practice this duty?

For over five centuries, many readers of the #NewTestament have maintained that the letter of #James flat-out contradicts the teachings of #Paul, that a person is made right with #God only by #faith in the death and #resurrection of #Jesus.
James insists that a person is not justified by faith alone, but by doing #goodWorks; but Paul argues with equal passion that a person is justified by faith in #Christ and not by doing works of #theLaw.
