  7. Alright, this is absolutely first world problems, but holy mother of healthcare, am I furious.

So, I saw a doctor in the #Baylor system (who have purchased most medical practices in the area), a few weeks ago. I paid the doctor at the time of the visit. ($165 after insurance). I knew there was a facility fee, but refused to pay it, because it's egregious.

I got an email this morning from Baylor saying I owed another $300 for facility fees. (I was waiting for the bill, so I could talk to someone about it.)

So I called and said "Hey, this charge is unreasonable, and well outside usual and customary fees."

And their response, as Bob is my witless was, "Our fees are defensible." Which means they had lawyers sitting up figuring out to the last penny what they think they can get away with.

    Those lawyers never met me.

His fear of leaving his family buried in medical bills.
Turns out, millions of Americans understand that fear.

If you can, please donate something to author Piper J. Drake's GFM for medical expenses. If you are in the U.S., you know how ruinous this is. If you are not, please read the post. Either way, give what you can--no amount is too small--and share the link.

Remember: tip ZERO--GFM charges fees from the donations, you don't need to give them more money at the expense of people already struggling to raise enough money to pay their bills.

  10. Y'all. I have been digging into this whole #facilityfee #HospitalFee thing that doctors offices are now charging.

Apparently it's become common practice across all #medical specialties, and here, the Texas Hospital Association, a lobbying firm paid for by Hospital Corporations, has spent millions and millions of dollars making sure we keep paying it. Every state has their own lobbying firm.

The lobby argues that without outpatient fees, hospitals would close, despite somehow being able to operate *before* private equity got involved.

Let's look at #Baylor Scott White. A theoretically non-profit org. They have over 20 executives being paid millions a year in salary and bonus. They have ex-executives they're still paying a million+ a year.

I'm saying I'm pretty sure they could remove facility fees from outpatient offices and make the budget work by trimming some executive fat.

  11. First world problems: I finally got an appointment with a pain specialist who writes prescriptions instead of suggesting massage for autoimmune arthritis. Hooray! He practices out of a major medical complex that includes a hospital. I just got an email telling me that I was going to owe a $325 Hospital Fee. This is not the doctor's fee, this isn't for any testing, this is a fee for parking in the same area as a hospital.

What. And I do not say this lightly; The Actual FUCK?

  16. Please copy and paste into the forms on the websites of your members of Congress and please share with friends.

    Dear Senator / Representative —

What are you doing this week to make healthcare more affordable? I would like you to include, “keep medical debt off credit reports” on your to-do list.

More than 100 million Americans are estimated to have health care debt. In response, more than a dozen states have instituted laws to keep these unpaid bills off consumer credit reports, but this current Republican Administration wants to reverse that.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau issued new guidance that challenges state laws, saying only the federal government can decide what can go in a credit report. Consumer advocates say that move could undercut state-level protections and worsen the financial strain on Americans burdened by medical bills.

No one voluntarily goes into medical debt.

Americans deserve a healthcare program that doesn’t leave them drowning in medical debt.

I would like you to hit the healthcare issue in detail every day, in every speech, in every media appearance until Congress comes up with a comprehensive healthcare plan that serves all Americans, not just the insurance companies and the rich.

What is your plan to get debt-free, affordable healthcare to everyone? Please talk about it constantly.

  18. This flew under the radar: "The #Trump administration took another step Tuesday to weaken protections for Americans with #MedicalDebt, issuing new guidance that threatens ongoing state efforts to keep that #debt off #consumers' credit reports."

  19. "But in the new guidance, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau asserts that federal law bars states from restricting medical debts from credit reports. The guidance, which offers a new interpretation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, reverses policies advanced under former President Joe Biden that sought to empower states to expand protections for people with #medicaldebt." kffhealthnews.org/news/article

  20. IF they qualify [they won’t, not now, in #Trump’s America], young adults can sign up for #Medicaid, the #federal & #state program for #LowIncome Americans, in most but far from all states.

But most buy cheap subpar #HealthInsurance that leaves them w/insurmountable #MedicalDebt following a #medical crisis. Others choose plans w/EXTREMELY limited networks, losing #access to their longtime #doctors & #medicines.

  21. Oh goody. Not only is the open enrollment period for ACA marketplace coverage shrinking by a month, not only are the enhanced subsidies expiring, my particular insurer, Aetna, is exiting the marketplace altogether.

I'm dead fucking serious here: if I cannot afford coverage and end up in medical debt again, I'm pulling a Luigi.
