Good Morning #Canada
#HappyBirthday to Donald Scott Smith, Canadian rock bassist for Loverboy, born OTD in 1955 in Winnipeg Manitoba. Unfortunately tragedy struck on November 30, 2000, when Smith was sailing his 36-foot boat Sea Major near the Golden Gate Bridge. A 25-to-35-foot wave swept him overboard and his body was never recovered.A short post this morning as the wife and I are taking the #GOTrain into Toronto to attend the auto show. Apparently McLaren has some new vehicles that might interest me.

Metrolinx issuing refunds following GO train disruption

Went to Hamilton's newest commuter rail GO train station. Just missed a chance to see a train depart, oh well. It is on the outskirts of town, but despite that, it sees fairly decent 7-day two-way service.
It's a barebones concrete glass and steel structure typical of commuter rail, since amenities like washrooms are on the train itself.

ALL ABOARD THE WEEKEND TRAIN
On Nov. 23, the GO Train service will expand its service along the Kitchener line, adding four weekend trips to the area.
The Ontario government reached an agreement with CN Rail on Oct. 16 to purchase the land needed to build GO Transit tracks along the Kitchener line. This deal was billed as a breakthrough in the province’s long-promised plan to deliver a two-way, all-day service between Toronto and Kitchener.
“I’m thrilled that the new weekend GO Train service is now connecting the Waterloo Region with Toronto,” Karen Redman, Regional Chair of the Waterloo Region, said. “This expansion will make a real difference for our residents and businesses—reducing traffic congestion, cutting carbon emissions, and improving access to jobs and opportunities.”
Redman said the region has long advocated for more GO Train service, and it is an important step toward achieving full two-way, all-day service.
“As Waterloo Region grows to one million people, investing in reliable and sustainable transportation is vital to supporting our community’s future,” she said.
The agreement coincides with the new GO Train services beginning on Nov. 23, which includes 18 additional weekend trips between Bramalea and Union Station.
The Ontario government says the new agreement clears the way to build 40 km of dedicated GO tracks, along with track realignments, signal upgrades, bridge work, and expanded platforms.
“Expanding service along the Kitchener Line is part of Ontario’s $70-billion investment in the largest transit expansion,” a statement from Metrolinx Media Relations reads. “Ontario now offers new rail, subway, and transit lines across the province from Barrie to Niagara, Kitchener, Oshawa, Toronto and more.”
Metrolinx continues to work on the Kitchener Line, where GO Trains currently operate primarily on a single track between Bramalea and Kitchener GO stations, limiting service capacity. The agency has begun installing a second track between the stations to enable two-way train operations.
“We will also be adding weekday service enhancements, such as two weekday trips between Bramalea Go and Union Station,” David Jang, Chief Communications & Community Engagement Officer at Metrolinx said.
“We’ll also extend one evening trip that previously ended at Guelph Central to Kitchener GO and add two trips that previously ended at Malton GO to Bramalea GO,” Jang said.
Commuters can expect two trains on Saturdays and two on Sundays once service begins. The trains will depart Kitchener in the afternoon and return in the evening, aligning with major events in Toronto.
Schedule times are expected to be confirmed on the GO Transit website in the coming weeks.

That seems like a big deal but as usual Metrolinx is being less than transparent about what happened
They had hired Deutsche Bahn as an operator for the Go Train, some kind of private partnership to improve operations, it was called ONxpress. This was supposed to transition on Jan 1st 2025, and it never happened. Now few months later, the whole thing is cancelled.
Can't wait to hear of the behind the scenes (if we get lucky)

Reason #49 why ##FordMustGo
Ford announced another big #GOTrain project this past week that would allow commuters to cross Toronto uninterrupted by freight traffic. He had no details on cost or when it would be built, and couldn't confirm they've talked with the railway that owns the track. This from a government that is crazy over budget & years behind on the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, and can't even provide an estimate for its completion.

dropped a knitting needle between the seat and the wall of the GO train. Neither me or the employee could reach it, but you can SEE it. He said he's gonna do a report and I filed a detailed lost and found request with the car number and location...
I'm told odds are good I'll actually see it in a week or two? Fingers crossed. And next time I'm grabbing an isle seat.

So #Toronto manages to
-Close West Gardiner to cars
-Have the parallel GO train line on Lakeshore reduced to hourly service
-Shutdown the subway between St Clair and York Mills stations
-Shutdown the Barrie GO train lineIt is an absolute disaster. No coordination between the agencies.

Camera bag: packed. Extra batteries: charged. Two SD cards: properly formatted. Backup power pack for phone: charged. Presto (transit) card: loaded with more than enough money for the trip. Layered clothing: selected. Tripod: ready to go, in its bag with the travel strap. Brand-new variable ND filter: cleaned and packed. Eclipse glasses: packed. Granola bars: in the emergency snack pocket. Sunscreen for my pale-ass self: packed. Feeling about as ready as I can be to take the #GOtrain into the path of totality tomorrow, and pleased that the #eclipse fortuitously happens on a day off for me.
Now, to not get anywhere near enough sleep, because my brain is DEFINITELY going to be convinced that I've forgotten something wildly-important.

On the downside, the regional transit authority, failing under years of insufficient funding and general governmental disdain, cancelled my train and the train after that, turning what had been my plan to arrive home 30 minutes early into the promise of getting there an hour later than usual (with a little luck). On the upside, I had time to buy baklava.

Once again I am in the quiet section of the #GOtrain and once again, there is a group of people talking and laughing at the tops of their lungs, and listening to a phone video without headphones.
This is after switching cars because the entire top floor of the first one stank of cologne.
We are not amused. Step up your game, #metrolinx.

As a long time rider of Ontario's commuter train system I've determined the worst/best post event crowds you have to sometimes ride the train with. From Best to Worst:
Raptors fans (well behaved)
Bluejays fans (not bad if a bit clueless about how to use transit)
Maple Leafs fans (old entitled rich aholes who spend $500 a ticket to see their team lose all the time and will watch movies on their cell phone without headphones)
Toronto FC (soccer) fans (Incels, date rap!st bros, and dudes with unibrows and/or chinstrap beards and/or still wearing man buns)
People going to a Lady Antebellum concert (savages)
