Got to do a Chef's Treat with the fantastically talented Chef Emily Schlieper, from Kitchener's The Lanc! From tapas to hot dogs topped with truffle chip dip, caviar, gold flake crumbled chips, no wonder her specials at Back of House Pizza (the Lanc's sister pizza joint) are so good.

Our Executive Director @uxMark was at ClimateFest in Downtown Kitchener yesterday meeting and talking with people about our free Cycling Guide mobile app. It was a beautiful, sunny day, and there were plenty of engaged people interested in replacing car trips with cycling trips!

I went over to the Bestival street festival in Belmont Village today. This is one of my absolute *favourite* events in Waterloo Region. I found some wonderful art to buy, heard some great music, and then saw this booth. I told James my story of my recent dooring in Toronto, and he gave me one of his t-shirts. We had a lovely conversation, too!

#BikeNite A1: Typing in from #WaterlooRegion, because I got nothing done this week.
I have an insulated steel coffee mug, but that's for coffee. Keeps coffee hot for at least three hours when it's 20C out, and drinkably warm much longer. I don't do much cycling in winter, but coffee stays hot surpisingly long in sub-zero weather.
For water I have a few steel bottles that I prefer, and some rigid plastic (polycarbonate?) bottles I sometimes use.

The awesome Jason Slaughter's @notjustbikes has a great new video out, dedicated to the new Line 5 in Toronto and many related facilities. It's a great critique that points out the good, along with *plenty*, yes *plenty*, of the bad, and the reasons behind so much of it.
His brief references to the ION LRT here in Waterloo Region and a future video caught my attention, and I’m looking forward to see what he has to say.

The fall badly bent the chain tensioner on the rear hub of my new Brompton. It’s now in the shop at Black Arrow Cycles in Kitchener ON awaiting the arrival of a new tensioner. Black Arrow is a great place with good people, and they’ve recently become an authorized Brompton dealer and repair shop, so it’s in very good hands. But damn! I miss the bike and I’m bummed I’m not riding it today running errands.

Then Friday I was riding along a separated cycleway on King Street in Waterloo, between a street and a pedestrian sidewalk. A pedestrian stepped suddenly in front of me. I braked hard to avoid hitting them, but managed to fall over. They’d had their *back* to the cycleway, facing shops, and I had no expectation that they would step backwards into my path. I wasn’t hurt.
I had some choice words for the oblivious pedestrian who, to their credit, was quite apologetic.

#BikeNite A1: I'm back in #WaterlooRegion now, but was in #Burlington, Ontario on BikeNite.
I've got one bright blinky white light on the handlebars (that, thanks to the advice on BikeNite, only blinks in daytime) and a blinky red light on the seatpost. There's reflective tape on all the forks and the rear fender, and I wear a reflective vest and ankle band. There are mounts on the handlebars for two more lights that I rarely use.

I was riding on the new continuous cycleway next to its continuous sidewalk cousin and spotted a van in the distance blocking them both. I was working up an indignant verbal message to deliver, until I got closer and saw the tree that had partially fallen over during Wednesday's storm. The van could have parked elsewhere, but given all the storm cleanup happening in our Region, I was more understanding and patient!

Tuesday shortly after Noon at Waterloo City Hall: Protestors rallying with the Waterloo Region Health Coalition to urge the Liberal government to enforce the Canada Health Act.
The Liberal MP for Waterloo, Bardish Chagger, was invited to speak, but was a no-show.

Join us as we hold nationwide Day of Action for federal action to stop two-tier, American-style health care
Canada-wide: On Tuesday, 1 September 2026, health coalitions and allies across Canada will hold information pickets, rallies, and other actions in a National Day of Action to amplify our calls on the Federal Government to take action against Alberta's Bill 11.
With the legislation set to take effect on September 1, health coalitions are coming together to send an urgent, unified message to the federal government: there is no more time to waste. We are urging federal Health Minister Marjorie Michel and Prime Minister Mark Carney to fulfil their responsibility to enforce the Canada Health Act to protect Canada’s universal, single-payer, public Medicare system and health care for Canadians that is accessible based on need, not ability to pay.
Actions will be held in 26 communities across Canada on Tuesday, 1 September 2026.
Background:
- Alberta’s Health Statutes Amendment Act, 2025 (no. 2), formerly known as Bill 11,
passed December 11, 2025. - The legislation establishes an unprecedented model of two-tiered health care access in Alberta by permitting physicians to work in both the public and private systems concurrently, including charging patients out of pocket for medically-necessary services.
- No other province currently permits this “dual-practice” model.
- Legal opinion prepared by Goldblatt Partners LLP for the Canadian Health Coalition states that Bill 11 violates the principles of comprehensiveness, accessibility, and universality protected and required by the Canada Health Act, and violates the prohibitions against extra-billing and user fees.
