@samuel if your content is (partly, semi) static, using a caching reverse proxy can help reduce bandwidth used on your origin uplink and improve "speed" (reduce latencies, increase bandwidth) for your users. some options are #apachetrafficserver #freenginx and #varnishcache, only to name a few. my recommendation should be obvious, but you have the choice and a lot of options.
as a pure (non caching) forwarding tcp or http proxy #haproxy is a good choice. -

The more I read on the #nginx F5/CVE/freenginx fork/mecurial issue - the more I'm concerned and think we should be very wary of jumping towards supporting #freenginx.
So the developer didn't want to allocate a CVE to a remote exploit. Duuude. I think you're on the wrong side of the argument if you're throwing the toys out of the pram over allocating a CVE.
We probably wouldn't want to run a package from China or North Korea.... No disrespect to #MaximDounin, but Russia is Russia and is practically a rogue state at this point. I'm not about to switch to freenginx on that point alone.
Won't use github or gitlab, but wooo retro Mercurial - nahhhh... Mercurial was great in its day, but the world uses git these days.

Is there any detailed info on why that whole #nginx / #freenginx fork happened? I've tried to dig a little, and the only thing I can is that apparently F5 wanted to assign a CVE to an exploitable security bug in a feature in nginx but that Dounin didn't want the CVE assigned because Dounin thinks CVEs shouldn't be used for experimental features? That seems very very weird to me, surely there's more?

Максим любезно согласился на интервью, вопросы задавал Алексей Рыбак ( @rybakalexey ), DevHands.io . [АР] Почему ты решил форкнуть nginx и запустить проект freenginx? Почему ты делаешь акцент на свободе, в чём был несвободен nginx внутри F5? [МД] Я в течении почти двух лет пытался избежать создания форка и безвозмездно занимался улучшением nginx - потому что считал и считаю, что создание форков не полезно для проекта. К сожалению, в F5 решили отказаться от наших договорённостей, и предпочли делать с проектом то, что они считают нужным, игнорируя как существующие политики проекта, так и мнение разработчиков, в том числе моё. Поэтому я создал отдельный проект, в котором позиция разработчиков гарантировано будет определяющей.

I browsed the past couple months of the #nginx developers mailing list for some clarification on the criticism (and need for #freenginx), but other than a grammar discussion nothing really jumped out at me.
I don't doubt there's a very good reason (besides being fully open source), but the dangerous/anti-consumer decisions weren't immediately obvious to me. I imagine we're going to need to see more releases to really notice where thinks are forking.

TBD if #freenginx will be able to get the support it needs. While I agree giving #GitHub a monopoly on Open Source isn't ideal, choosing Mercurial at this fork doesn't bode well.
I don't mind Mercurial (I used it for years myself), but nearly everything is #git..🤷
